Anyone watch "Roadworthy Rescues" on Motor trend?

I see its been on for a few years but I just started watching a few episodes and I really like it so far. I am a fan of RoadKill and the spinoff shows, this one is similar but much more gritty and hacky if that's a word haha.

I get its a show but some of the things he does are hilarious, like spray bombing an engine and saying ok, there's the new cam, and will spray lower and say, rings are done! He's not trying to flip cars and screw people, its more like just finding cars that have not run in 40 years and getting them going again, giving them away to people.

Love some of the names he has for parts, reminds me of one of my old buddy's Dad who used to say stuff like sparkolator or lightning hoses etc.

Some of it is so cringeworthy though, like spray bombing an old carpet from blue to black or re covering seats without restoring the frames or just screwing/seam sealing in floor panels and so many other sins.

Anyone else catch the show?

Here is a shot of the host in case nobody knows what I'm talking about.

I just started watching this show. My favorite so far is the Deloreon episode. WINGNUT
HEMI Daytona Convertible

Kern Dog

I've seen a few episodes.
I like that he has the guts to take on some long-dead projects. He seems to have some great skills at reviving cars.
The way that he talks though.... :eek2:
What some people find charming, I find really annoying. I'm not as tolerant as I wish that I were. Sometimes I have a hard time overlooking what annoys me.
Graveyard Cars is another example. I love that they work on exclusively Mopars but that show focuses too much on talking and stupid filler than actual restoration work.

Fair enough.  At least he went off script and isnt wearing baggy shorts with his flat brim baseball hat covering his ears like many other car shows  :smilielol:

and GYC, I'm with you there. I tried watching some episodes a few months ago and just wish they would spend more time showing the actual metal work, especially on the Chargers, where they were hanging quarters etc, you know like the guy on this forum with the Youtube channel, Chris B/Junkerup.
I think the last 2 really talented metal fab guys they had are now gone.  Ive been checking in on that show since episode 1.

Kern Dog

Oh yeah, the flat bill hat pulled down to the eyes with ears tucked in might as well be a uniform for dorks. Again, I try to overlook stuff that annoys me but sometimes I just can't.
The dudes from Street Outlaws with the black hooded sweatshirts and denim shorts....again, all the guys dressing and looking the same as if they were on a sports team.
Awhile back, I'd see car shows on TV that almost always featured ONE guy with a mohawk and tattoos.

Pinballjim

I like the guys style.   He generally does cars that I wouldn't be interested in but it's fun to watch.  I like how he calls it a "Craigslist rebuild".

NHCharger

Wife and I call it Redneck Rescue. Will watch it but not a big fan. thousands of other guys out there doing exactly what he does. Often wonder how some of these guys get their own show.

These shows are never techy enough for us because we are the biggest (muscle car) tech nerds out there.

'Jurassic Park' was not made for genetic scientists.  Gotta go for mainstream appeal and make that money.

I get a kick out of his terminology i.e. "lightning hoses", "whirly sparker thingie", etc.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Back N Black

I like the show, watched every episode. But, the show is now cancelled along with Road Kill, Road Kill Garage and Hot Rod Garage.

RallyeMike

I love watching this guy bring a dead vehicle to life and drive it down the road. No bull. Just wrenching.

The same activity has certainly entertained me for a handful of decades.

I know his style and and methods are not for everyone but he sure knows his stuff.

I now started watching his Youtube channel, vice grip garage which was around before the show. Similar premise as the show but the youtube videos are way longer, like 3hrs long sometimes.

If you have a smart TV, it usually has the Youtube app already on there so watching it on your couch vs the phone is the way to go.  Ads are not even that bad, you can skip them pretty quickly.

Watched him get a 65 Barracuda up and running last night, what a mess that car was and he made it 14 miles vs the 400 miles home from FL to TN.

my favorite one so far is where he works on a 1986 Honda CRX. I had one in the early nineties and seeing him not able to even fit his hand anywhere in the engine compartment was hilarious.  He got it running of course and ripped out 50 miles of vacuum lines and slapped on a weber carb.  I lost it when he was looking at the wheels and exhaust saying that it must have been modified because he never saw a Honda that had a small exhaust tip vs a coffee can and the wheels didnt have ridiculous camber!! Great stuff.

I agree!   I do enjoy the show! Its funny and sometimes amazing he gets some of it to run again.

I started watching per this thread. Yesterday I watched the big red chevy truck one. He must have buckets of cash to plop down for all this. He never starts or states what he paid for anything including the car/truck he starts with? By the 10th episode some of his odd ball names for things starts to wear thin.
Some of the cars are so funky, rotten and mouse pee soaked I'm amazed he isn't sick as a dog. (That stink don't go away.) Still it's fun to watch.

You have to realize this is a TV show. Like most "reality" shows, we'll never know how much the producers pony up for the materials used in the show.

Yea I hear ya, I'm not much for fake shows it's just holy cow the money on that episode was outrageous.  :scratchchin:

I don't look at most of these shows as genuine. I don't necessarily see them as 100% scripted either.
This Derek guy seems like a decent dude but yeah...the quirky terminology he uses is way overdone. It reminds me of a joke that may have been clever once but keeps getting repeated.
He seems to have skills and if you're not a hardcore brand loyalist, the variety of cars that that he comes across may be great to see.
I have to give the nod to Roadkill and Roadkill garage though. While some of their stuff seems to work out to be convenient to happen, they claim to be unscripted. The wife laughs at some of the stuff that happens on their shows because it mimics what she has seen me do...dragging home crappy cars, doing some bullshit repairs just to get them running, spectacular failures and mistakes...I find that fun to watch. Freiberger, Finnegan and Dulcich never make adjustments to a fuel make it happener or replace any lightning hoses....

I'm thinking of trying his wipe on shine on my old 2K single stage Kirker pure white paint job.  :scratchchin:

It's a shame that some of the MotorTrend shows have been axed

Per a post from Mike Finnegans personal page and on his YouTube channel, Discovery, which now owns Motortrend has officially ended Roadkill after 13 seasons along with all the other Motortrend shows that they just bought earlier this year. Cited 45 billion dollars in debt and no foreseeable future way to become profitable.

No word yet on what this does for events like Roadkill nights, Hotrod Drag week or Hotrod Power Tour as technically Discovery owns the rights to those as well.
Gotta love a '69

I distinctly remember Roadkill nights being the first thing to end. Just before last year's event, I remember reading that it was the final one.

How the hell did Motortrend amass billions of dollars of debt? They ALWAYS acted like they didn't have a pot to piss in
