Title: 3rd gen convertibles?
Post by: THE CHARGER PUNK on February 06, 2006, 10:07:11 PM
i have seen 1st gen and 2nd gen charger convertibles but has anyone ever done a 3rd gen convertible? personally a 1971 yellow and black 383 4-spd superbee convertible would be a sweet ass car and , to do this what would you need to brace so the car wouldnt fall apart?-MATT

have been done on Photoshop in the past and defintelly doesn't look good.

and IMHO as I have stated in the past, no Convertibles Chargers for me. They loose one of the signatures of chargers... longer roof with recesed windows. 1st and 3rd gens are also slightly recesed.

i think you would ruin a car and turn it into junk if you tried to make a charger a convertble.i know some one here made one out of a coronet, which is kinda neat, but dont chop up a real car

The 1st gen convertibles I've seen were pretty much a Coronet with a Charger front end bolted on.

A 3rd gen convert would look just has hideous as a 72-ish Camaro/Firechicken would.
Now, a 3rd gen with T-tops would be more agreeable. :icon_smile_big:

I was in the not gonna look good camp until I saw those photos. I think it looks great! :o I am not saying it would be a good idea to attempt it but it could have look awesome if they gave you the option. Of course I am a Ragtop guy! ;)

Here's another guy for this will look aweful, but actually isn't bad.  Somehow seems to follow the rear quarter quite well.

I just can't believe it actually looks decent...   :icon_smile_blackeye:

I thought it would look like trash too... but the rear fenders seem to make it flow right. I likes it... I wonder what donner car would be best for the convert top? I dont think they made a convertible b-body in that genneration that you could get the workins and the window frame from.  ???
I wouldent do it untill I installed ladder bars uner it to tie the front and back rails together.. only thing giving it ridgitiy as it is is floor boards and 2 20guage tubes that form the rockers.

wow that really freaked me out to see my car chopped up like that(the white one)
How did you do that? That is very impressive work.I must admit it looks very good as a convertable.

Glad that you like the chop  ;D

If you take a close look, you'll see that the stones on the right side are actually the same ones as on the left side. It took me about 20 minutes to do it - most of the work is done but cut/paste - the rest is just playing around with the brush   :icon_smile_cool:

Great job Charger ST!  :2thumbs:

And after seeing this I must admit that 3rd gen convertible looks better that I thought.

Not my thing, and at the first sight of this thread I went "yeesh, no", and all but squinted and was prepared to close my eyes at the sight of one....

But, I have to admit, it works.... convertibles still not my thing, but I can certainly appreciate the looks of those two chops.

Great work.

3rd gens make everything look better hehe
play nice rd!

i admit if the factory had built that,it would have been pretty nice, aftre seeing the chops, but i still wouldnt cut one up to do it.you would probably need a tube frame of some type, and reinforcement behind the dash and rear seat to keep it from twisting apart.

Even I still don't like the convertible Idea on a Charger even I love convertibles I have to admit that the photoshop job WAS REALLY GREAT.

Still think that Roof finish at the end is some how one of the main details on a Charger, no matter gen, imposible to reproduce on a convertible.

about use the convetible stuff from a Donor... No B bodies avaliable since 71 so it would need another different donor, maybe an earlier B body or an E body ???. Definitelly will be a custom job

You might do it with an E body setup or you might have to go to another line like Ford or GM or as you said completely a custom job.

:iagree: The rear of this top has pretty near the same angle as the rear roofline on a 3rd gen.

Maybe even a larger car like an olds cutlass.  I know of a 72 Olds Cutlass convert. that is about the same size as my 71 charger... I am sure it wouldnt be perfect but who knows since its a custom to begin with!
