Sorry, I meant to put this in Interior. Anyway, what is the correct rear view mirror for an early 68 Charger? I think it's the top one with the silver metal day/night lever (which I bought at a swap meet) but I think the car had the black plastic day/night lever style in it when I bought it.
Also, do I have the correct base?
Top mirror is correct, the base is for 70 and up.
Crap! That's what I was starting to think about that base. :brickwall: I doubt I'll find just a correct base for it.
Is the other mirror for a 1970 and up too?
My 70 mirror and base look like the top one you have there.

Also, this thread mentions that 68 and early 69 base/stems should be squarish. I've never seen one, no pics.

I think it's this Star Trek looking thing.
bull i have the last one you showed pm me
All of the '69's(4) that I had used the round mirror stem.
My '69 (and most that I have seen personally) have the squarish one....
Sorry dont have any full on pics... ;)
Even the XP Hemi has it ;)

So does that last pic I posted look like what you have Chris?
I think bull's top mirror pic is also correct for 67 chargers as well...

this is the mirror i have

yep just checked mine is the same :yesnod:
Cool. One more mystery solved. :2thumbs:
Well now. I'm experiencing a new and interesting dilemma with this mirror thing. As best I can tell it seems the base that was in my car already is correct but the stem and mirror were wrong. I bought a base and stem from charger490 but the base bolt pattern is way off on that back hole. But I think I can use his stem in my old base and pull this off. :shruggy: :scratchchin: Maybe...
Can anyone with an early 68 charger post some mirror pics for me?

Actually, if you look real close it isn't the same. At least not the base. The stem part of the base and mirror look the same but if you compare his base to yours they are different. Of course the side he's got the picture of up there is hard to see on a car because it's mounted toward the windshield but it's quite a bit deeper than yours.
Yours is like the one on the right below with the short groove above the rear mounting hole. Same bolt pattern as mine where the two front ones match but the single rear mounting hole is nearly 1/2" off.
This one is in mine September 1967 build date
Cool! We haven't seen that style of stem yet. :rotz: :brickwall: :P :'(
Yes you are correct I see it now....
Here are a few of my '68 with it's scheduled build date of 12-26-67.
Dan
 That arm is different yet. :icon_smile_blackeye: I've seen several examples of that one though, usually on Ebay. Your car is 13 days older than mine so if the mirror is original to yours that's probably what mine would have had.
Crap! Well, at least I've got the right base. Now I have to decide what I'm going to do for a stem/arm/whatever.
I have both the short and long square arm mirrors, the short one came in the '68 R/T and the long one (like last photo) came in the '68 318 A/C car, which had a '70 interior. Both had the narrow base mount. The R/T mirror head has the grooves, don't recall about the other.
Curtis, If you want I will ask the previous owner if he ever changed it out. He got the car in '88.

If you don't mind. :2thumbs: Thanks.
my december '67 build, think its the original :2thumbs:
So both of these mirror arms are supposedly from December 67 Chargers? :RantExplode: Ok, I'm just going to use the one I've got. :P

Curtis,
My rear view mirror is original to the car, as far as the last owner knows.
Dan
Thanks for checking, Dan. :2thumbs:

:scratchchin: perhaps it was down to what assembly plant the car was built at !! :scratchchin:
:scratchchin: Maybe. :shruggy: Do you guys know where your cars were built?
Unless I'm missing something all early 1968 Chargers were built in Hamtramct, Michigan. St. Louis assembled Chargers were built in early '68, starting in March I believe. I have to believe that the assembly line just had bins of different supplier stalks/posts that the assembler's grabbed when needed. :Twocents:

That could be the case. :shruggy: I guess we can chalk this up to another odd, early 68 quirk.

This one looks correct because only the '68 had the longer stem. '69 and '70 stems are shorter because headrests were added to the seats. :Twocents:

They were optional in 68. My R/T has them.

And optional in '69 up until 1/1/69 where they became mandatory :Twocents:
So, how about this headrest = short mirror arm/no head rest = long mrror arm theory?
Well, I used my old base and the arm I got from Don (charger490) and it turned out fairly well. I actually finished it about a week ago but forgot to post pics. The hard part was finding a decent paint match because most silvers are just too metallic. And the base I have is pretty dinged up but it will work. It looks like the ball must have gotten loose in the past and some dummy thought peening it would tighten it up. :rotz: Anyway, I media blasted the arm and base and then primed/painted them. The ball, plate and fasteners were all plated with clear zinc and I think he had a helluva time with the ball because (he claims) it's stainless. Ooops. I didn't know. :shruggy: The mirror itself is just a good original I found at a swap meet that cost me $10-$15 IIRC.
