Title: Drivng my 66 for the first time
Post by: jimcoronet on March 19, 2011, 11:35:57 PM
Hi,
Just wanted to share a little something. As I've mentioned here before, I bought a 66 and have been waiting for the snow to melt before actually driving it for the first time. Well, today was the day. Even though it was just 2 degrees above zero (Celsius) I couldn't wait any longer. It took a while to warm up (enough for me to realize that the temperature guage is not working) but I finally got to drive it!!! After about 20 minutes of country driving, I stopped in the parking lot of a restaurant to crawl under to check for leaks/drips etc. When I crawled back out,
a kid from the restaurant (about 18) was standing there asking what kind of car it was and teling me how much he liked it. Hope I get the same reaction from my wife, who until now has only seen pictures!!! Hope to have it home by next weekend, if the weather gets any warmer.  I've just been grinning all day. I guess you're first time is always special.  :icon_smile_cool: Anyone else care to share their first time??

Get used to the attention, it never goes away!!!! Keep an eye on your rear view, Cannot tell you how many times I've checked the rear view and seen the people behind me trying to figure out what I'm driving, you litterally see them reading the tail light script C H A R etc. If you don't like attention , wrong ride!! As for your wife, I can tell you now, you should not have a problem, in fact, my girl friend gets more excited about the car than I do, she's the first one to tell anyone, step away from the car!!!First bottle of  NXT wax was applied by her, to my amazment. How much better can it get. Enjoy your ride!!!!!

Not really a "First time" cruise in the same sense as yours here, but Nothing comes close to that first cruise after 4 years of straight work. I am on year number 7 with the kids car, before that it was year number 5 for "Christine". Before that, it was 2 1/2 years on the General Lee, and before that it was 3 years on the Dart.
Again, nothing even comes close to that feeling of accomplishment. When all your friends come over and tell you trying not to laugh, how "nice?" the car is progressing when all the time you can clearly see what they really mean is "Nice, it'll never hit the road again"...

Beautiful Charger you have there! Love the color!

My first cruise was when I took it for a test ride before I bought it. It wasn't very impressive as he had two plug wires crossed and there was a nasty noise coming from somewhere under the car  ! But I took it anyway! Glad I did!

I agree with J Bond...you should get used to the attention. It will be non-stop. One day I was getting gas in the Charger and a guy pulls up in an SUV with a lady in the passenger's seat. He's wearing a shirt with a car dealer logo. He gets out and passionately goes on and on for like ten minutes about how this is his most favorite body style ever and how he loves it. Meanwhile this lady is waiting and waiting. It's obvious he feels VERY strongly about the car and I'm waiting for him to start hugging it or something. Then he thanks me for my time and explains that he's "with a customer out on a test drive and he saw the car and HAD to stop and look!" I glanced in the car and this woman had a look on her face that was like "...what the hell is going on??!!" Priceless!

Enjoy!!

Funny you mentioned people trying the read the emblems  :smilielol:  I thought I was the only one who noticed that.  At the stoplight you always have that lady in a civic behind you and she leans over the steering wheel almost pressing her face on the windshield to read the letters across the back.  Probably my favorite is when you're driving down the road and someone comes up next to you and waves or gives you a big thumbs up.  You get a lot of those! I don't want to rub it in but I drove mine to a cruise in yesterday and it was 80 here :)  Great car man... enjoy it!!

I agree with James and Justin, alot of thumbs up, or they ask at a stoplight "What year is that?" I can't wait for the reactions when its finally painted. ;D

I think they're nice.  Saw my first one in 66 when I was in high school.  Bought my first one the day after I returned from Vietnam.  Definitely a love it or hate it sort of car.  Unique!

People do get a kick out of them because there are so few on the road anymore.

I have been stopped at gas stations and riddled with questions along with people running inside to get a disposable camera to take pictures.

Right after I finished the paint and body and got it all put back together I drove it to the station to put gas in it and a bunch of Harley riders all got off their bikes to come over and check out the car. More than a few offered to trade me straight across for their bike. I thought for a minute one of them was going to even offer me his woman.

The one question I get the most driving around and anytime someone stops me is...

WHAT YEAR IS IT?

Enjoy your Charger, I'm sure your wife will have lots of fun riding around in it.
