I have a 69 Charger with a 440 (from a 68 imperial). It has the Mopar Electronic conversion kit. I had the old mechanical regulator on it. Now I have an electronic one but it's a race only and puts out little over 13 volts.
Lets say I want to goto the autoparts store and want something NOW! What application do I ask for that will give me the proper regulator. I have a 2 pronged ballast resistor.
If you have the wiring for the elctronic regulator you could ask for about any street application. Tell them it's for a 73 Charger with a 440.
they make an OE style regulator for the earlier pre-70 cars that looks stock but is electronic. easiest way to tell is look at back side..if no resistors on bottom of regulator, it's the electronic chip style but will bolt up to stock location & wiring
Thanks Ghoste and A383Wing. That was going to be my next question; wiring. So looks like I might as well get the OE style that hooks up like the old one. I'm really not into cutting splicing and soldering. Just not that confident in ability. Maybe if it's absolutely obvious what to do, anyhow, probably easiest to get the look a like?
By far the easiest to get that one. I misunderstood your post to mean that you were already wired for the new style.

yes...and when you have it in yer hand...turn it over and look at the underside...if there are 2 resistors there, give it back to them..you don't want that one...it's the "points" style...
If there is nothing on the back and it weighs almost nothing...that's the electronic style

The black one pictured above will go in the Charger tomorrow, since I just killed two points style regulators with my new Powermaster 7018 50 AMP Alternator. I thought 50 Amps wouldn't be that bad but the regulators went up in smoke.

Wow, I'd pay 75.00 all day long. I'm gonna call and see if they have any left. I kept blowing my mechanical regs ever 2 months. TuffCat sold me one of those but said you can't get them anymore. It's been two years and works great but I want a spare. Great post.

How do you like the Wells VR-706? Will they work as well as the VR1 or VR2?
Allright guys I need some help. Finally I have time to look at the car and I'm going to do something about it. If the wells VR706 isn't readily available here in town. I'm taking them a picture (printout from the ebay link posted here) so the guy can look for me. Then I'm going to search the posts on this subject, again, because if I can't get that part then I recall something to do with getting the wiring for the voltage regulator and having to wire up a 4 pronged ballast resistor?
Anyone? By Jezu**** I'm going to do something about it now. Thanks for you patients. I hate having to ask for help again when I haven't really done much of anything.
Allright the guy at Benson's auto parts found the VR 706 for me and I'll have it in thaaa mornin. Only draw back is it's 50bucks. But ordering it on Ebay will probably take 2 weeks.

I have a new spare here.....as with any electrical part...it may fail eventually....and how long will it take you to get another if it does fail?

:iagree: with Bryan. It's an electrical part but if you get 2 AND keep the spare in the trunk, it will last forever (LOL!).
I bought a second and that is where mine is. Got mine from them in 2004. Works great still.

Well guys I got my new VR 706 from the local place. It doesn't look like the one pictures but, it has the correct hook ups and it is the part number. So what the heck. It's black and plastic. I'll post a pictures later.
Car doesn't want to start now. I figure it's the fuel pump. My wife picked it up for me today and when I'm not working I'll put it on and see what happens.

I am getting ready to put my electronic ignition in, and I bought one of these electronic regulators. I am wondering, do you have to do anything with the ballast resistor near the old points style regulator? I have the MP electronic conversion kit, and it has a new resistor, is that where it goes, or is that on specifically for the VR? Thanks for the help!!!! :popcrn:

The ballast resistor is a part of the ignition system and the voltage regulator is part of the charging circuit. Obviously they interact with differnt parts of the electrical system but that is a simple way to look at those two parts. So to answer your question, the resistor in your conversion kit is the one to use.

I wasn't aware you couldn't run a points style regulator with Mopars electronic ignition, probably explains why my regulator failed in the first place and luckily it didn't wipe out the ECU, however, it took the gauges out instead by killing the instrument regulator.
I called FBO to order the regulator and was totally impressed with Don, his knowledge and helpfulness was absolutely exceptional and outstanding. Hopefully they bring back the A688 as an option to the "better" HR688 box.
