There was only one EXAR-1 ever made and it was rooted in a BMW prototype. BMW commissioned Frua to do the 3.0Si concept for debut at the '75 Turin Auto Show. Frua's internal project number for the car was 374. A few years later, Frua somehow reacquired the car from BMW. Ramirez hasn't yet told me how or why he contacted Frua during the EXAR development, but the bottom line is that Frua slightly redesigned the front of the car to accommodate the electric motor and electronic controls and then shipped it to Ramirez in Texas. Frua's project number for the EXAR was 374-2E (makes sense) and it was the last completed project to come out of his shop before he fell ill and eventually passed away. The production cars were intended to be Kevlar-bodied copies taken from molds of this car, but Amectran never got that far.
Was it a scam or a conspiracy? I don't know for sure but Ed Ramirez is pretty convincing when he talks about it and the fact is that that the Secretaries of Commerce and the DOT were in his corner. Regardless, it's a great story and an important footnote in automotive history. It is also especially timely today when alternative powered cars are all the rage. Whether it could have ever been successfully produced, the prototype EXAR-1 showed the world thirty years ago that you could a modern, beautiful, comfortable and useful "electronic" automobile.
The car was in perfect condition when the feds seized it in '93. It was sold at government auction in '97 and subsequently tragically cannibalized and abused (someone even tried to add a 944 body kit. Fortunately, the Frua archives in Germany has the original blueprints and the BMW Zentrum has expressed some interest in helping. My goal is to get it back to its original glory and have it placed in a highly visible museum, not necessarily in that order. Unlike the 376mpg Opel, it will never be sold again. I also think the Amectran story would be fun to bring forward. Ed Ramirez is alive and well, lots of fun to speak with and you can literally feel his passion for the car and the project. When I told him that I had a factory poster of the car hanging in my offices, he almost became speechless.
The good news is that most of the original body is under the mods and the car is truly rust-free. Better yet, the original Frua build tag is still intact.

Keep them coming! I had a GT, fun cars, and Stratus ralley cars kick butt! I'm hoping Fiat wake up Dodge....their racing history goes way back. Check out the old school SIATA modifications for them it's like tuners in the 50's. Many don't know TVR was a kick butt line of cars and MG made an MGV (V8 powered MG-GT) Had I guy I new back in my Triumph/Jag./MG shop days that put an alloy V8 (Rover/Buick) in a TR-6 with a 4 speed overdrive, IRS set-up! My retired SCCA racer TR-4 Had dual side draft DCOE Webbers, a Sig-Erison racing cam and hand made headers. With 12 to 1 compression I blasted many big block GM's and stomped a 69 Vett so bad one night he followed me till I stopped and could not believe what he could not catch! The Triumph over drive gave you 8 forward gears and let you stay glued to the power band...guys would shit when I just kept shifting into more gears as I ran away up to 120 mph. The Jensen Interceptor came with a 440 and was my first experience with a big block Mopar. We had an old tired one a customer brought in for restoration, my boss said: "get it running so we can evaluate it for them". When that 440 barked to life in that small coupe the whole shop stopped and came over...the boss yelled "open the bay doors quick!", I flopped the hood shut and rolled the door open, he hopped in and backed it out and lit the tires and shot down the street! That's when I knew....I was getting a 440 someday! With the builds I've seen here I'd love to see a Jensen done right the speed would be incredible! :2thumbs:

I'm a firm believer that just once everybody into Mopars should drop the hammer on a 500 C.I. 440 stroker with a straight gear and a posi....
The primal feel of whatever car body fighting you as hard as you fight it can't be described to the average guy/gal....
The moment I knew I'd have a 440 was one night I was out in my 5.0 Mustang that was running high 6's at the time(on Nitrous), with a stick...
Pulled out on the local strip late one night, got some gas and while I was filling the tank an older Black guy smoking a cigar pulled in in a 4dr '70 Satellite with a 4-speed..now, being a Mopar guy before I went to the dark side for a brief moment, I had to check it out...
Ask'd him about it and he said it was a 440 4-speed with a Dana 60 all out of a '70 RR he had wrecked...The 4dr was all he had at the time, so he dumped the drivetrain in it...Well, Long story shorter, he pulls out, I pull out, we "hit 'em" and Bout the time I got good in second gear off the bottle, he pulls up beside me laughing, chewing on his cigar, and grabbed a gear and was Gone......I never saw him or the car again.....I vowed right then and there I'd never fool with another small block ever again.....

As far I know Gustavo Sandoval ( if is he as the attachment name says, and if my memory is right ) was a local racer. He used to be on Mopars and AMC. he died on a car crash with a Jeep...
He used to have an Original yellow AAR Cuda
this was the last car he raced

I guess long gone are the days when a car was a member of the family, like the dog or cat and we had genuine affection for them,.. folks used to proud to pose with their new car, but today, cars are just an appliance we don't want to care about or care for, we drop it off when an idiot light goes off or refuses to move, or the brakes squeal so bad and grind we have to shell out thousands and thousands cause the guy at the shop hooked a cable under the dash says the battery pack gonna need replacement and the ion flux capacitor is catty wupus to the solenoid injector thingee. :shruggy:

I just read a story about Chevy's LS1 program and what they had to do to keep up with the Hemi, seems that the LS1 Camaro had a dealer cost of over 9,000.00 in 1969! :smilielol: (Chevy didn't want to eat the RD expense)

the storage issues is sad....wow
anyone know where those are at?
I have seen those pics before (the storage ones) but I can't remember where. Either a magazine or on the net someplace.
The storage pics are old internet photos from ........ somewhere. :shruggy:
I think it was discussed on Moparts once that the guy was out of space & worried about thieves. I think the wing car was actually purchased the day those pics were taken.
Cool thread Brock!
Man I remember those days, It was pretty much like trying to steer a turd down the street. The longer the forks, the worse it was. :smilielol:
