ensures that I have clearance for the shackles, also aids in installing leaf springs.
Next, the color was sprayed, a glorious day..... All shown in this post........

Some interior stuff, and suspension stuff. For the glovebox I made a liner out of aluminum. I really dont like those flimsy cardboard ones. The dashpads were cleaned up and painted with SEM. Steering Column was also all rebuilt.
I think thats pretty much it for now. The next step is getting the front suspension all rebuilt and getting the car rolling. Then it will be time to build the motor!!!
:coolgleamA:
What's your plan for the car? Like why you put a cage in it and everything :popcrn:
:coolgleamA: retina searing - I love that color... :yesnod:
that is indeed a hot color - thinking about that for my 69 Road Runner... :2thumbs:
Awesome metal work....definitely have skills there man
I hope no one gets locked in the trunk now...no way they're getting out now ;)
Awesome color! Keep the pics coming.

Great work man.
mad metal skills man , just awesome
great color choice :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
SERIOUS work across the board - very inspiring! Sometimes I wish we could just leave all the welds visible so people could understand the amount of work that goes into a build...
Very nice job on Charger. Impressive bodywork/sheetmetal skills. I love that color green
Thanks for the kind words everybody! The color is definately awesome, I can't believe how well it turned out. I was originally going to go with sublime, but after I saw a new viper that had the color, I changed my mind, and I'm really glad I did. Best part about it is that its actually a mopar color!

I think I might have covered the cage stuff in the other thread I posted a link for, but in case I didn't:
- I got in an accident in my '65 mustang and decided I wanted the added safety of a cage in this car.
- Added torsional rigidty. The car will launch harder and turn quicker.
- I think the added strength will help get rid of those wierd old car vibrations.
- I really wanted the experience of building a cage. I think it was the most fun part of the build.
- Rollcages look badass, and you need it if you break in the 10s.
That color ROCKS!
Future plans? Well, I'm basically building a real mean weekend warrior/street machine. I also wanted to step my game up, and figured a hot muslce car couldn't hurt with picking up the ladies!
The engine is going to be a monster 440 stroker. Behind it will be a reverse manual valvebody 727, and after that a Dana 60 with a detroit locker and 4:10 gears. Rims will be black powder coated street lites, 15x12 in back under the mini tubs with some mickey thompson rubber. A 15.5" wide tire will fit. 15x7" rim up front. The interior will have alot of stock parts, including the rear seat, door panels and upper pads etc. I will get different front seats, I'm thinking some corbeau BAJA seats right now, but I'm not sold on those yet. The guages will be Autometer, so I will have to fabricate something custom, but preferably in the same layout as the original cluster. As far as suspension goes, I'm keeping the front mostly stock. MOOG parts. Possibly a flaming river manual box. The back will get caltracs and monoleafs.
I'm hoping to finish it by this time next year, but that is very optimistic.
Oh yeah, I also want to thank all the members here. All the info posted here was invaluable to getting to this point.

To be honest, I have a detroit locker in my Mustang, and I have to say that I really enjoy it. When I want to do donuts, there's no substitue for the detroit locker!
I bought some rear tail panel trim and thought I would post it up. A company called Vans Auto (http://vansauto.com) carries them. Other members on the forum said they found repops on ebay, but the seller apparently ran out. With a little bit of searching I found the seller above. They cost some coin, ~170, but these were the last trim pieces I needed, and finding decent original pot metal ones is impossible.
I was pleased with the fit and quality. Also, I bought them locally in Phoenix from a vendor called RPC for those of you in the area.
I'm planning on buying a flaming river manual box, the power to manual coupler, and some other goods to finish off the front suspension. Hopefully I'll have some pics posted up of that in the next month or so.
I was also planning on buying a wilwood disc brake kit. Its seems that 'just suspension' has a pretty good deal. Anyone know of somewhere more competitive? Also, I was planning on running the 12.19" rotors with 15" billet street lites, hopefully they fit, anyone got a clue about that?
Another question I had regarding the discs - I was told that drilled and vented rotors cannot be turned? Is this true. I might lean towards getting the non-drilled ones if I they aren't servicable.
Thanks in advance.

That Charger looks awesome... You really have the skills to do that, and I can't wait to see the finished result.. :2thumbs:
any updates?
Not much I can add to the other members' posts but......your metal skills are impressive indeed. I was all over woodshop but never learned how to weld so I really appreciate that kind of work. Your car is gonna be a looker! Congrats.
Tom.
Your doing a great job!!!! Love that color, too!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs:
More stuff put on it. Flaming River manual steering box and rag joint, and a set of wilwood disc brakes.
I thought these pics were cool. Even though its all mopar here, I'm sure you can guess what the black car is?
I think I've posted this pic before in another thread about the window tint, but here it is again anyway.
As far as updates, I'm saving up for rims and tires. After that, I'll hopefully be ordering a new Dana 60, caltracs and mono leafs, and finally getting the thing rolling again.
Youd better get that mustang away before the Charger eats it
Nice to see someone else getting some good progress, i love your car dude. By the way, go to bed!
love the color :yesnod: looking good !! nice work :2thumbs:
Is the Rustang a 65 or 66? LEON.

Great Job
I LOVE THAT CAR! :drool5: What wheels you going to put on it?
RIMS!
They are 15x6 and 15x12 billet specialties street lites. I had them anodized bronze. Definitely a different look, which is what I was going for.
Tires are Mickey Thompson S/R, 8" front and 15" wide 29" tall in back. I haven't mounted the tires yet, but I'll update when I have.
One more pic. Hopefully I'll have some more soon.

I've had it about ~4 years. I bought it from a guy who was in to flipping mopars out of Sacramento. It was a shell when I bought it. I'm not to sure if it was orginally a floor auto or not. The steering column was not a shift one, but there were many parts that were not original. Not sure of its history.
Oh yeah, almost forgot, I bought some fancy hood pins too. Instead of the cheap sheet metal scuff pads, I got these fancy billet ones. I'll probably have them anodized bronze to match the rims.
I can't wait to read what you guys think about the rims, I'm sure some will hate, others love it??!
I was a bit worried about the bronze, but I committed to try something different and didn't want chrome/polished rims - definitely accomplished that goal!

I absolutely love this car build; so much so, that I did a short recap on the build over on SLTV (http://www.streetlegaltv.com/news/gallery-this-diy-snake-skin-green-69-charger-promises-one-bad-bite/). I want to thank Mike (yeahitsgotahemi!) for helping out and getting back to me so quickly!
Keep up the good work!

I have my Coronet in for body & paint, hopefully have it back by end of month.
I followed Mike's build and have gone the same route with color, also going from roots blower to Procharger and will put six pack hood back on, the 2 cars will be very similar. Will start a thread with pics.
Excellant work Mike!! :2thumbs:
Hey, got pics of your tires mounted yet??
Rims and tires mounted. Just need a rear axle and some leaf springs and it will be rolling again! :2thumbs:
One more.
i have renamed this thread the "inspiration thread" because man this motivates me!!
one awesome car you have there and you have done outstanding work to get it there :2thumbs:
Are those wheels staying that colour?
That colour does not match with green. Way out of place.
The rest of the car is awesome!
I got in trouble on Moparts on a post about a blue 72 Cuda with aftermarket wheels. One particular guy disliked the big rim look and was a real jerk about it. I called him on it and I got clobbered. I learned from that post that once you deviate from stock wheels, the opinions REALLY come out. I have 18" rims on my Charger and I love the look. I dont care if half of the Mopar crowd thinks that they look cartoonish. I spent the money for what I wanted.
Having said all that, I want to compliment you on the paint! MY god that looks great! The contrast of metallic green with the black looks amazing. I am not a fan of the wheel color, sorry to say. Its your car though. If I was judging a car show I wouldn't let it sway me away from appreciating the rest of the car. I like the wheel design and tire size very much. Its like a modern adaptation of the classic "big and little" pro street look. Very cool. I certainly didnt intend to offend. Just ONE mans opinion.
I like it! :2thumbs: You car definitly stands out, in a GOOD way!
oh man not feelin those wheels :Twocents:. The color of the car is awesome though :2thumbs:.
I kinda like it.. good to see someones doing something different. :icon_smile_tongue:
that's a sick color combo. very original and you could always have another set of wheels... want to see it done and in the light...
If we all had the same taste we all would be driving the same car.....
I actuall like te look and the combination of the colors however it would not be the route I would choose. But I want to give you a big :2thumbs: and dont let some negative comments get in your way
yes great job on the car!!! :2thumbs: LOVE the color!!! just not to crazy about the wheels... but it's YOUR CAR!!!!
WOW!!!! Those look GREAT!!! :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :drool5:
Love the Car,not diggin the tire-rim combo for me anyhow.I gurantee to hell you wont see one like it around but you might now :2thumbs:
Just to clarrify. The wheel colour choice is not a negative comment, just simply looking at it from a colour matching perspective. EG: When you wear a suit, you wouldnt have a black suit, blue shirt and then a yellow tie. It just looks out of place and not matching, not proffesional, not appealing and would not do good for your own image.
Those wheels to me do the same. That colour combination does not work. Perhaps you can think of something else? The wheels are nice, the colour of the car is awesome, love the green, love the car, nice to see something different. I remember the pictures way back when you put them up the first time, you got great ideas and it all fits... but the wheel colour.... dont leave that as an eye sore on such a beautiful, well thought out design for the car you have. Theres gotta be something else different yet matching if you dont want the general black/chrome.
:2thumbs:
An eyesore,how rude :nono:
Yep, I thought people would be split on the color. Since chrome rims is about all you ever see on Classic Mopars, I anticipated some people wouldn't care for it, but hey, I'm happy with it. I really like the color, and after I anodize a few other items, I think it will fit nicely for my purposes.
I'll be ordering an axle for the rear, so hopefully in a month or two I'll be posting pics up of that. :2thumbs:
i seem to remember the Group 6 Ferraris, Alfas and some others of the era ('68-'70) would do that, I'll try to find a pic..
GT40s too... 'n I always thought they had the best looking wheels ever. :shruggy:
There was someone on here a few years back that had restored their third gen and had found some NOS Cragar SS wheels with the gold chrome centers in them and it looked good. Can't remember what members car that was though.
Here's a photo of the gold Cragars I found on the net. I remeber a friend of my fathers having these on his Nova in the mid 70's
:2thumbs: The car looks mean with that tire/wheel combo. I think the color combo looks pretty cool. Can't wait to see it on the ground and outside, when you get it rolling.

:iagree:
Well done for giving it a go. I like the colour choice of both car and wheels. I'm not sure about the tyre choice, but will reserve my judgement until the car is sitting on the ground. Either way it is a nice car and I am jealous that you are a whole lot closer to finishing your car than I am! Keep up the good work and photos!
Nice pictures Brock. The browny colour works with the colours of those cars, they are matching/complementing colours. Green and that browny bronze colour doesnt compliment, its like wearing a yellow tie on a black/blue suit which nobody would do because it doesnt work.
So I just thought, making an awesome charger the way this green one has been done, the powder coated black fuel cap etc thats been done which is amazing... why throw in the odd colour that is not complimenting at all to the rest of it? Its a colour out of place. Im purely looking at it from a graphics/colour combination perspective, you will never see people put those 2 together cause it looks like u ran out of ideas.
I understand everyone goes chrome or black and he wants to be different. Why not be different with a colour that compliments the green charger? Dats all.But if thats what u want, the black suit, blue shirt, yellow out of place tie combinaion, then go for it. I just merely suggesting there are other options than black/chrome considering everyone does that.
Either way, I love this car. I almost decided to make mine green rather than orange after seeing that. So yeah its awesome

Any updates?
I remember seeing a photograph of a 1963 Pontiac Grand Prix with Gold colored bumpers, in fact all of the chrome, pot metal and aluminum pieces were that same gold color (like the "V" on the hoods of the 1957 Chevrolet Bel Airs.) It was different but I don't think it sold very well as I never saw one "for real."

Thanks Ron, I closely followed some of the 'proven engines' combos, so all your tips littered through out that section helped me build it! Thanks!
1) For the radiator I bought a fan & shroud assembly off a Ford Contour. These are popular with the off-road crowd and they fit really nice and apparently pull some serious air flow. I bought the fans new for $100 and I can already tell they'll be way better then the perma-cool fans I bought (they were not pulling enough flow and I was having over-heating problems). They pull 30 amps so I had to upgrade the alternator to a 100 amp unit.
2) Shot of the engine with the filter on it.
3) The picture of the radiator opening was to show the solenoid I bought for the vacuum headlights. For those of you without a headlight switch or if your wanting to go electric with the switch, you can use a direct operating pneumatic valve that runs off 12V. I hooked mine up to a regular non-charger Mopar headlight switch so I don't have the vacuum lines running all the way to the switch and back. You can also see the aluminum vacuum reservoir I bought from summit, which is much nicer than the stock coffee can units. Its got a vacuum gauge hooked up that I can see from under the bumper, but isn't obvious unless your looking for it.
4) This pic is showing the work done on the stock tank. I welded an internal sump in it and also welded some male NPT bungs so the AN fittings bolt right up. Caltracs are in...love caltracs.
1) Fire extinguisher that is mounted on the roll bar with a quick release pin..safety first!
2) Another interior shot. Sportcomp II gauges in custom aluminum dash. The brake and gas pedals are from XV, but I machined the foot brake pedal myself since no one offers them. Billet specialties steering wheel. Corbeau Baja seats which are real comfy and look like they belong in a muscle car (as opposed to those euro/asian Sparco style race seats that you seat a lot).
3) Shot of the rear with the rear glass and trim in. I have LEDs in the tail lights.

Thanks Ron, I closely followed some of the 'proven engines' combos, so all your tips littered through out that section helped me build it! Thanks!
You're welcome....glad to hear that Forum helped you sort it out. If Dwayne prepped your heads i can guarantee you they are perfect ! The 337 intake makes excellent power and it is low enough to clear a stock hood if you wanted to. It had much better throttle response than the taller Indy single plane on my stroker when we dynoed it. That engine is going to be an animal....you'll luv it :drool5:
Good thing you got the Dana because an 8 3/4 would be toast in short order !
Those seats look fantastic. I would imagine a lot more comfortable than the factory seats :2thumbs:
My Buddy Kevin (Blown68) is just finishing up his 68 Coronet and painted it the same snakeskin green and it looks killer. Like yours it has a flat black 'glass hood and black tail stripe. He's also using a Weld drag wheel with with gold centers. I can only imagine what these two cars would look like sitting side by side in the sun :coolgleamA:
I'll have to get him to post up a few pics sometime soon.
Keep at it....the craftsmanship and attention to detail is outstanding.
Ron
Update, :popcrn: :drool5: what's the latest , you can't leave us hanging, this car is just something else, not sure on the wheels but they do start to grow on you,
Hey and no one is ever going to mistake this car for someone else's.
Post video if you ran that engine, I have done a couple of similar and varied engines, would love o hear how it urged out
Thanks for the interest. I've been battling issues with the transmission and should have that buttoned up (I hope) by this weekend. I'll follow up with some more pictures in a few days.

Awesome car! Where did you source the grill?
Amazing color, and please, please, please!!! Leave those wheels that color, they make that car dude!!

The grill is stock and was restored by me.
Some pictures of the Charger out on the street. Ran into some gentlemen with really clean rides.
The Challenger was really nice, had a new Hemi engine in it.
Few more. Still have a list of things to finish, but its mostly complete now.
Few notes:
Had cooling problems. I ended up buying a new radiator with 3" thick core from Wizard Cooling. The cheap ebay radiator, although nice, didn't have the cooling capacity for the 512 and 110C weather no matter what combo of fans I tried. I used a SPAL pusher (don't buy anything else, all other electric fans I tried were junk), and a flex type fan (stainless) on the front.
Transmission was a lot of fun. Blew it up after 300 miles, sprag let go. Company was good about it and warrantied the trans.
:2thumbs: badass !
Awesome! :2thumbs:
Congratulations

Sweet ride. I was going through old threads and saw your car. Loved the color and painted mine the same. Those rims set off the bronze pearl in the paint. Nice.
Great attention to detail and a fantastic result.
:coolgleamA:
Very Very nice! :drool5:

Yep, a few jet changes and some timing = 681 RWftlbs and 441 RWhp. Not to shabby. I figured it was going to make 100 less torque and 100 more hp, but hey?
Seems like it wants more cam? I'll enjoy it as is for now. Maybe help pull some buildings down or move a train...
If I assume 25% drivetrain loss, thats roughly 900 ftlbs / 590 hp at the crank.

yup that will do unless you want to open up a space time continuum , great result on the dyno figures :2thumbs:
Damn!!! That's some good power numbers, what a torque monster! Better invest in extra sets of tires. Great work, it's a beauty :2thumbs:
:o over 680 lbsft at twenty eight hundred , strong motor , charger looks mean & nasty :yesnod: great stuff

Beautiful car, well thought out build :drool5:
The combo of power and looks are amazing :coolgleamA:
Your Charger looks fantastic!!!!! Great job. :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :drool5:
I am a die hard when it comes to stock apearing Chargers,BUT Your Charger is the exception. What a BADA$$ unit. Love it!!!!!!! :2thumbs:
Any plans on running that beautiful beast down the 1320?? Very interested in the numbers if you do.
Now that you had a chance to put some miles on it, curious how you like the seats? They really suit the car and look very comfy from pics. I'm 6'6" and my OE seats don't have the factory headrests, I find them Very uncomfortable on long drives.
Your car is stunning :yesnod: and deserves all the accolades
Well done sir.... Well done

As soon as they reopen the local track here (used to be Firebird, now its under new management and called Wild Horse Pass), I definitely want to give it a go. Will post up results next year most likely.
I like the seats a lot, both looks and comfort. For a big guy like yourself, I would go to an off road store and try out a display model first before throwing down the cash. The side bolsters in the regular seat might be a bit tight for larger folks. They do have a wide version of the seat I bought I believe.

First off thanks for the heads up on the side bolsters. I was hoping they might offer that seat in different sizes.
Can't wait too see the results when you hit the track. Hopefully you'll be bringing some real slicks, with Dyno numbers like those your tires won't stand a chance.
Curious also on your rear gear choice and stall speed in the converter...
No matter what it ends up running I bet every guy in attendance that day will wish he was going home in your car.
That's one SWEET ride you've built :popcrn:

Looking at the dyno sheet you can see it going richer as the rpms are climbing. That will hurt power a lot. You ideally want the A/F ratio in the high 12's to low 13's at WOT. At 5100 you are in the high 11's so it's getting too much fuel. :yesnod: Correct that and the power will move up ;)
It does appear that it's peaking early which can be a too small camshaft issue....but with those heads at MW port i would think it should keep making power to 6K with XS290S :scratchchin:
There's certainly more hp to unlock with tuning....i would think based on experience that combo should be in the 600hp range at the crank.
The tq numbers are definately off....now way it's making that much torque at such a low rpm. My 572 didn't make that much at the crank at those engine speeds. ;)
Generally, i don't place much stock in chassis dyno results....i use them for tuning the A/F under load and shoot for best results. Once you get it to the track the MPH number will tell us how much power it's making. :Twocents:
Nice job, the car looks fantastic !

Thanks for the feedback Ron.
I'll have another look at that A/F. I was a bit skeptical on the torque numbers as well. I might have to buy a wide-band O2 sensor and see if I can't do some tuning of my own.
Do you think I should try stepping down the jet size again? Any tuning suggestions appreciated.
