Title: Opinions on portable garages, you have one? In your garage? UPDATE!!!
Post by: 1969chargerrtse on February 22, 2009, 05:50:51 PM
It's killing me to see how moisture beats on my car ( Rusting bolts etc.. ).  It's rainy and humid right now as I type.  I want to buy one of the portable garages and put it in my garage, close the door (flap) and put a small oil filled heater on low while it sits during the winter and wet spring months.  I see cheap 200.00 ones on ebay. Overall dimensions: 16 ft. 9''L x 8 ft. 10''W x 7ft. 1/2''H .  Any thoughts or pictures of your encloser?

Seal the garage up tight and buy a dehumidifier. The newer "low temp" ones won't freeze up until they get below 41 degrees F.  Heat the garage, keep the temp. as constant as possible. I keep mine about 55 F in the winter, I always run the dehumidifier year round.  My car hasn't had any paint on it for over ten years....it's still nice and clean except for a bunch of dust that has settled on it...

This old garage is not seal worthy, it's attached to the house and has a tall peak cealing.  The real issue is the wife's Honda in the next bay.  She's in and out all day.  In the winter she brings in wet snow and ice that drips off the car and on the floor, making the concrete floor wet/cold and damp.  I need to put my baby in a capsule or one of the portable garages or split the garage in half.  Today is a rainy day, I told her when she comes home, leave it outside. :D

I saw a neat product somewhere... I'm looking for it...

but maybe if I explain it, someone will remember it.

The basic concept is similar to the Car Capsule http://www.carcapsule.com/, but instead of having to drive in and out of a bag, this thing I saw was more of a frame, wrapped in plastic.

The end opened up so you could drive in and out, and there was a side "door" so you could get in and out of the car.

It has the same kind of recirculating air system as the capsule.

AirChamber.

I found news articles about a US office and YearOne has them on their site.  :P

Many other places showed up in a google search...

This is a neat idea, although not what you're looking for in terms of sealing things up.

These covers only fit cars up to 196" long. Our 2nd Gen babies are 208".  :'(

Edit - I contacted the company and they have a larger car cover in the works.

My car sits in an old carriage barn with a concrete floor that wicks more moisture than a sponge. I could spend $800 on one of those Plastic Bubbles with a fan in it, or I could just go by a big roll of heavy duty clear plastic at the local Farm supply  or hardware store, and completely seal off an area in the barn myself. Throw some cheap plywood on the floor inside to drive on instead of just the plastic... throw a fan in there, or maybe even a dehumidifier and still be way ahead of the game.

Seal it with those shrink wraps they use for boats

Burp the lip and call it a season hehehe

I need something that I drive into, and can close up simple and quick.  I take my car out a lot, but sometimes I rains a lot and the garage gets damp. Then there are the longer storage winter issues also.

I think I found what I can use.

http://www.harborfreight.com/cpi/ctaf/Displayitem.taf?itemnumber=98253

It doesn't show a front door/flap, so I have to make my own, but this would be perfect.  I can fold it up in summer, fall weather.  Open it and heat it in winter an wet spring weather.  Plus it's not to expensive.  The Charger is just over 17ft, it's low enough to have in the garage, and the exact width I need, any larger would be into the other bay.  Oh Yeah. :2thumbs:

Have you thought about building another stall onto your existing garage?  Or building a seperate detached garage?  that is what i'm doing this spring, a separate detached garage for Chargers only!  :2thumbs:  But maybe you dont have the room, i dont know...  :shruggy:

You'd better have a real roof over that flat-roofed air chamber thing as well as the cheapo Harbor Freight setup if you live where it snows, otherwise it will collapse in on your car. The good thing about the bubble-type structures is that the roof is round so it's not going to catch as much snow and debris. That air chamber thing looks like it would cave in with three gallons of water on top of it. And I don't think I'd part anything I value under something made by Harbor Frieght.

He's specifically asking about putting in inside the garage (see thread title). Hopefully it doesn't rain or snow inside there. ;) Of course, I've recently experienced that exact situation and wished I had some sort of temporary structure.

I've seen people make temporary paint booths out of similar products - I may have to try that out one of these days...

That thing from HF is pretty cool. I like that it collapses like that.

but, that's not going to seal out moisture. It doesn't talk about it being water resistant or water proof.
Make sure it's not a breathable fabric, or else all you'll be doing is shading the car and maybe preventing water from hitting the car - as in rain drops (hopefully that's not a problem inside your garage though)

If you do figure out a way to seal it up, make sure to add a fan and filter to circulate the air or else you'll be sealing moisture in as well.
As mentioned above, you could have more moisture wicking up through the concrete floor than you'd think - and that will be very bad for the car.

In that case I have to agree with Daytona R/T SE in saying do the work on your garage to seal it up and maybe get some heat and a dehumidifier in there. I can't see it being any more damp in your town than mine here in Portland, Oregon and my garage is dry as a bone.

I have a sealed garage and it still gets damp/wet on the concrete floor.  Dang Kansas Humidity.  It's so bad that my brand new Cragars SST's all pitted and they have never seen rain or snow.  :brickwall:

Yes, I want to put a cheap garage in my garage.  That foldable 10x20 will not work as It can't be wider than 8ft.  10 ft will be in the wife's area, and not allow any room.  So either I do nothing, which will be cheap in the short run and very expensive in the long run, or cut my garage in half and enclose my section.  Unless I can find a 8x20 that will fit in there.

I hear ya.....Kansas sucks. It was over 70 yesterday and in the 20's tonight. If you don't use your garage for your daily driver you can use a space heater. If you keep it at least around 50 you should keep the floor from sweating as much when it warms up. I have one of those oil filled radiator type and it does the job on my 26' X 32' when it is in the 20's or above outside. I light my wood burner almost everyday so that helps dry it out good till spring comes. I keep my two ceiling fans on all year round as well to keep the air moving. The only thing I have to deal with is the heavy rains we have had the last few summers. My yard can get flooded and then water seeps in through the cracks in the floor.....fun fun. I live in a low lying area  :brickwall:

Trying to convince the Old lady about us spending money for heat out there (in my seperate sealed garage) is like trying to draw blood from a turnip.  Times are tough here and money is very thin.  I'm screwed. :brickwall:

Wood is cheapest. Initially maybe higher price to start but wood can be free in you hunt for it.........or follow the power line trimmers. I seen used ones on craigslist. The pipe is expensive though. Hopefully things will turn around for you.

Thanks.  Wood in kansas is scarce.  Our state tree here is a telephone pole, and not much shade at that.
Also, woodburning stoves are great, but are the cause for most home/garage fires !!  Insurance company's deny 99 percent of the claims too (so I hear).

Maybe in Gardner but up here in Topeka trees are a nusance  We have enough severe storms to keep me stocked up. I have been burning wood for 25 years with no prob. but sure accidents can happen. I bet most of those people didn't have a safe system or was careless.

I store my '70 in something called a "Car Jacket". You unfold it on the floor, & drive over it. From there, I remove the battery, top off fluids, etc. Then I place several large bags of dessicant (included with the Car Jacket, & re-usable) throughout the car: engine compartment, interior, trunk, underneath, etc. You then cover the car with your regular car cover. Finally, you unfold the rest of it over the car, zip it shut, & lock it together with little padlocks.
Keeps out rodents, dust, moisture, etc. Unzip it come springtime & it's just like you put it away, dry & clean.
I did a step-by-step thread a while ago on this with several pictures. Try doing a search?  :shruggy:

Thanks, I've seen those.  Again I don't think that is for me. I want to be able to use my car all year.  I don't have a problem taking a short ride in the winter if the roads are dry.  I would be zipping and unzipping that thingway to much for my liking.  That's great for the winter long hauls.  Your Charge and garage are beautiful.

I saw this post a little late but...
I used a Tent-Garage to work on, paint and then store my car during the winter snows (N-E Ontario, Canada...enough said about snow. LOL)
If you get one, expect to pay around $300 or so for it  Make sure it has strong-walled steel tubing supports. I had mine up for 1 1/2 years with no UV issues (well it was a fairly concealed spot)
It worked great!  I took it down and still have it stored to use later!!!
The only thing is, you MUST go out and clear the snow during and after each snowfall... this is a must! No cave-ins!

The front and rear doors are zipped and bungied respectively - you can drive right through it and leave the doors rolled-up or off completely.
I bought it at Canadian Tire.  Great piece of kit!

Those car capsules work pretty darn good. I have a buddy who has 6 of them in his one shed/garage. He calls it a shed, I say its a barn. Being that 3 of the cars in the capsules are factory HEMI cars including a HEMI Cuda, 69 Bee, and a 69 RR. I'm sure a Charger would fit in the same one.

I wish I would've seen this thread earlier...

For the price of that tent - -  have you considered installing a heater your garage? It would take care of the dampness problem by eliminating moisture on an "as needed" basis, plus you can maintain a nice warm environment if you decided to work out there. That tent will still be damn COLD in the winter.

Last year I re-routed a pipe of natural gas into my garage (from the basement) then installed a heater from Lowes. The total cost was around $350 with materials. The extra cost to heat the garage above 40 degrees is minimal compared to that tent....and way more versatile for the kids ....and me, to play!  :icon_smile_tongue: (picture #1)

Plus there's no hassle of working on your car inside a tent!  :eek2:

I you decided to work on your car (like you did this winter) once you open the tent...you just let all the moisture in. When you're done working, and ready to seal it up, extra moisture you let in gets trapped inside! Doesn't make any sense to me.

This year I also bought a nice heavy duty garage floor mat to put underneath my car. This does a great job to prevent any moisture absorbed in the concrete to wick its way up from the ground and collect on the undercarriage. (see picture #2)

Thanks for your concern but I am positive I made the best choice for my needs.  You have to understand my garage.  It's a double door double bay, connected to the end of my house.  There is no way to enter it but from the outside.  2 big problems are that my wife goes in and out all the time which means whatever warm dry air in there is gone. In the winter or rainy days her damn foreign car  :icon_smile_wink: drops snow ice and water all over the cement floor which makes the area damp for my American baby :icon_smile_wink:.  There are spaces for cold and damp air to enter everywhere, and I have tall pointed roof to let all the heat out.  Nothing is insulated, none of the walls are sheetrocked like yours.   This capsule will be perfect.  I can open the door flap, and drive in and out as many times as I need.  I can seal it up on spring rainy days and the dual fans will move air through it and keep it dry.  I can heat it if I wish. CHEAP!.  If I have a need for more major Restoration ( Lord help me, no more please. ) I'll just move over to her bay, and start up my turbine heater.  :icon_smile_big:  No I thought this out long and hard, it was section off the garage (lots of time and money), or something portable like this.  If I had a garage like yours I wouldn't be doing it this way.  I'm confident the air chamber will work well for me.  I should have it Friday.  Saturday I'll open the side door to work on the interior.  Pics coming soon.

First and foremost...you're a smart cookie.  :2thumbs:

Secondly, you really thought things out based on the design of your own garage.  :yesnod:

Thirdly, yes my wife and I bring in slush when we drive our cars in, but I'm always there (yes, I'm anal) with a squeegee. :eek2:

Fourthly, if there's such a thing as a fourthly, your car will be protected and that's all that matters!

Fifth and final, sounds like I'm lucky to get out this cheaply. If I had your situation, I may have done the exact same thing with my car. :icon_smile_wink:

Yeah it's a big cold dark place out there.  With 3 kids, one Cheerleading, the wife is in and out all day long.  The worst being the cold damp concrete floor. Heating that space would be like trying to heat my house, but leaving the doors open.

You're right, most of your heat would be lost up in that high ceiling.

I think I will look into one of those air chambers too. I have no intention of insulating, drywalling, & heating my garage anytime soon, so sealing off one car right now makes sense. I don't have a severe dampness issue, but the natural moisture in the air ends up on everything.  ::) The building is vented & I run the ceiling fans all the time for air flow, but some days the humidity is so high I find drops of water on metal objects & my daughter writes her name in the mist on the tool chest.

O.K here are some pictures of what the kit looks like.  You unroll it and plug it in.  It fills with air and then you step inside and build the frame with the tent poles.

Some more.  I hear it's supposed to rain tonight.  Bring it on.  You can drag the thing out of your garage should you need to, it's not heavy to move.  I have to scoot it over 6" or so to give a little more room next to the giant Honda.  So there sits my Charger with 2 small fans moving air through it. :2thumbs: :coolgleamA:

If I do get one, there's no way I can hold back & not freak out the neighbors with it.  :D

I'll get out my Tyvek jumpsuit the painters use & rig up a phony respirator & put some of those hard shell, yellow plastic cases we use at work for the pipe lasers inside to make it look like a HAZMAT clean up.

That is kool. It's a bit pricey, but much less than a restoration. Those using ventless heat sources, keep in mind they vent moisture back into the heated area.  :2thumbs:

how much extra space is there inside the bubble on the front/back?  (will it clear my General Lee pushbar that sticks out like 3 inches past the stock bumper? :P)

I got about a foot, front and rear clearance and 1 1/2 ' on each side.  I just get out, and walk out the back.  I use the side door to clean or work on the interior.
This morning was cold and damp.  My truck was soaking wet from what was in the air.  The Charger was bone dry.  :2thumbs:  To me worth every penny.

Yeah well..... My little guy opened the Pilot door into the rear 1/4 last year.  :brickwall:  My wife thought I was gonna drop dead right there.  I freaked out.  I just don't want them to keep rubbing the plastic with the car door and mark it up, or wear it weak.

Yes, many things do.  I just do a lot.  I just sprayed the ends of my dash and my steering shaft wth that special black swede color and that came out nice.  :icon_smile_wink:  Here are some more pictures.  I just ran a nice duct tape guard down the side.  No biggie.  :icon_smile_big:

I posted it after I read your nice comment.  I love the thing.  I feel now when it's zipped up it's dry and there is no dust or anything around it (filters ).  If I park it in there shiny and waxed, I'll bet anything a month later that's how it will look when I pull out.  No car cover needed. Also all the times the kids are in the garage or washing moms car and I have to keep telling them "don't spray the Charger".   I'd take a large dry garage any day, but It's a great fix if you don't have one.  No regrets, so far.  It's like it has a force field around it.   :hah:

Question?   Are those bubbles watertight\proof on the bottom and how far up the side. Moisture (understatement) this year is a problem in my garage. Normally there is a little water under the main door during spring thaw but extra snow and above freezing during the day\-28 overnight has created a small lake inside my garage.

Look at the door open picture and the rear door open picture and you can see it's on the floor.  Wouldn't work in your situation.  I just have a moister issue on wet days.

I get my car 'Rust checked'.  This rust preventative oil based material is excellent for stopping and preventing rust.  I have the same problem with moisture and with this stuff I see no rust.  The stuff can be purchased in a spray can or there are companies that spray it on as well.  There is also a wax based product that works well to.  If your car is exposed its a good idea to get some of this stuff on it, inside and out.

I think it would be better to build something of your own.  So far it's working out great.  The weather here is damp and my car is dry and that was the whole purpose.  I will say though as long as you drive in slow and just use it for that it's great.  It's delicate is all I can say.  If you were to work in it, you would probably tear something.  I lightly opened my door into the plastic side zipper door and tore a hole, I did something else real stupid and won't even mention it, but again I was using duct tape to seal it up.   ::)  I like the fact that it's real easy to repair when you do stupid things.  :icon_smile_big:  Work in it?  I don't know.  Knowing my car is in my garage dry when it's humid is a super great feeling.  I know it's a little expensive ( I used my tax refund ) but I truly am protecting my very expensive investment, or money hole. :icon_smile_wink:

That's what I'm doing... more room and far less money, about $100 all said and done. :yesnod:
I actually have it started, but not completed as yet. Unfortunately due to my current work schedule and work location, I only have "2 hours a month" where I can get back home to work on it at the moment... very frustrating to say the least. I'll be home permanently in a few months though... I'm hoping anyway ;). I like this home made method better... it leaves the lights and electrical outlets inside the bubble.

At any rate... here is a link to what I have so far: http://s703.photobucket.com/albums/ww35/FastbackMike/Cheap%20Car%20Bubble%20Project/?albumview=grid

Go to GRID mode, click on the first image, then just use the arrows on the side of the screen to navigate ( they pop up when you mouse over them). Sorry, I only have 3 shots so far, more to come in early May when I get my next 2 hrs in.

By the way... Thanks for starting this thread. It gave me the inspiration and motivation to finally get me off my duff and start working on this long overdue project.

What you're doing looks great.  There's no way at all I could build something like that at a 100.00 cost in my state, plus install fans.  The one good thing about the Air Chamber is that you can fold it down and roll it up, and your back to your original garage.  That part I like.

Well, I got a little further along on my trip home this weekend. Still not 100%, but fully functional just the same: http://s703.photobucket.com/albums/ww35/FastbackMike/Cheap%20Car%20Bubble%20Project/?albumview=grid

Go to GRID mode, click on the first image, then just use the arrows on the side of the screen to navigate ( they pop up when you mouse over them). I get my next 2 hrs in at the end of the month. Then it will be 100%...
I have 3 lights inside the bubble, 3 electrical outlets, and plenty of space to move around.
Not bad for a $50 roll of Heavy Duty plastic, 5 or 6 EL-Cheapo 2X4's at $2.50 ea., and 5 sheets of 5/8" Chip Board Plywood at $7.00 ea.

I'll have a dehumidifier in there in the summer months and probably just a small oscillating fan in the winter. The door is not 100% air tight so there will always be a small amount of fresh air exchange taking place within. Plus the door will obviously be opened every time I take the car out as well so... no worries. It may not look like much, but it gets the job done. Maybe someday I'll build myself a real garage so I won't have to deal with moisture issues, but until then, this will do just fine.

So how is this air-chamber holding up after 6 months?

I think I am about ready to bite the bullet and order two of these for my un-insulated detached garage for my charger and trans am.

I think my main concern is durability.

Dang! No wonder ya'lls cars are so nice. :drool5: Mine is covered outside (400 dollar car cover) and has never been in a garage or on a Concrete Slab it's whole life. :o Of course it gets driven every week which helps.

Absolutely great.  My car is always dry.  I have no complaints.  I drive in it with ease, sometimes I zip it up sometimes not.  I did tear a few places because of being stupid ( duct tape seals fine ), but as long as it's used to hold the car and nothing is around it to tear it , it is fantastic.  I bought it to keep the car dry and that's what it does.  I walked outside just now and snapped a picture. The barricades leaning against it are so the little one does'nt open the wifes Honda door into the Charger, again. :brickwall:

Two thoughts after looking at your "bubble garage":

1. Is it mice proof? I think the concept holds a whole lot of validity, but as my wife just pointed out to me - mice would easily chew their way into something that thin around these here parts.
2. I like the dent-proof barrier you've made out of plywood and towels. But, as plywood is both heavy AND has pointy ends capable of piercing that plastic, I would suggest using 4' x 8' sheets of expanded foam, the kind used for insulating house exteriors under vinyl siding. It's light, cheap and easy on the paint.

Otherwise, I love your car!

Thanks for the thoughts, maybe a long single foam sheet would be nice.  Those are plastic and light escalator barricades.  As for mice, I use a trap with peanut butter to get them.  They hang out in my shed where all my small gas engine equipment are stored.

I have one of those portable garages too since i have moved and have no garage any longer, i was thinking of one of those capsules, but i drive my car in the winter, when its not snowy at least, so it would probably be counter productive sealing it up.  I do need a some tar paper or plywood or something for a floor though.  At least the heat from the exhaust and such keeps the bottom of the car pretty dry, when it sits after a drive.  The bottom is undercoated, but still have the typical rust starting on the lower rear quarters.

" i was thinking of one of those capsules, but i drive my car in the winter, "

That's the point of the AirChamber.  It stays up via tent poles.  You can leave the rear flap up and drive in and out as many times as you want.  When the day is humid you drop the rear flap, zip up the two sides and the fans move air through it and the car stays dry.
Scrowl down to # 80 post.

Really?  Cool, was it still 850.00?
Don't be so excited to take your Charger for a ride that you back out of it before zipping up the rear flap like I did.  Oh, they duct tape up tears very well. :icon_smile_big:

I know this is an old topic but I wanted to find out how the air chamber 1969chargerrtse bought has held up over the last couple of years.

So, has it held up?   (other than driving into it....lol)

Are you still using it?

I may get one later this year to help cut down on a mold issue due to dampness.   ::)
