Title: R/T or SXT?
Post by: Iguanaman on October 13, 2008, 11:21:13 PM
Hi folks-

Newbie on the board here...and hope to be a Charger owner this week sometime! But I'm a bit confused, so I'm looking for opinions. I'm a married dad of 2 (if that matters) that commutes 50+ miles/day, most of it on interstate or 45 mph roads. I rented a 2008 Charger with the 2.7L V6. It needed more pop under the hood of course, and the cloth was a bit ugly, but other than that I loved it on my commute. I decided without driving one that I wanted an '06 R/T. Drove one today, and I was SHOCKED (no pun intended) at how rough the ride was on bumpy roads. The suspension seemed beyond stiff, pretty undriveable for my daily commute. Then I drove an '07 SXT, and the ride was much more comfortable. The power, of course, was less, but still OK. I thought I was settled, until I drove a different '06 R/T (with the Road/Track performance group) and it seemed to ride closer to the SXT than the first R/T.

So what happened? Did I run into a bum R/T suspension on the first '06, or is it the Road/Track group? I thought that was going to be an even stiffer ride. Not sure now, if I will buy an R/T, or an SXT. Any opinions/insight? Thanks in advance.

For what it's worth, Consumer Report said the same thing about their clumsy handling and overall crude, nowhere-near dialed in driveability.

When I test drove my Daytona, the first thing I asked the salesman was to take me to the crappiest streets you have around the dealer (which was in NJ where the roads tend to be better than in NY where I live)
I was pleasantly surprised how well it took the bumps with the 20" wheels.  The R/T with the R&T package has the same suspension as the Daytona.  While the ride is no where near comparable to a Lexus, it was sufficient for me.
As Bull stated you can find a lot more info at the site he posted or over ar www.chargerforums.com

The R/T I drove was a purchased vehicle in its past life, not leased. I'm wondering if the last owner had the stock suspension stiffened.

Am I wrong that the suspensions should get progressively stiffer as you go

from SXT  -->  R/T  -->  R/T R&T  -->  SRT?

I wouldn't necessarily say stiffer but more performance orientated, which in turn usually means stiffer so I guess you are correct in your assumption ;)

 In My Opinion...
I would suggest the SXT with the 3.5 6 Cyl.  and the softer suspension would be a better choice for you, cheaper on the wallet and at the pump, the R/T are gonna be a far harsher & more costly ride.  :shruggy: i've driven them all 300, Magnum, Charger, and Grand Cherokee
in Touring SXT, R/T and SRT guises and I liked the 6 Cyl. 300 the best, though the Blocky Styling, lack of standard features, interior materials, colors and paint quality ruled all of them out as a car I'd purchase.
I like the new Chally alot more BTW and that is a definate concideration for a future purchase.

lettuce know what you decide and welcome!

I think all chargers should have 4 doors.   :stirthepot:

I've seen 1 or 2 pictures of RT rims like this:

Anyone know where to get these, or get treatment on the stock R/T rims to get this finish?
