Hi everyone, I am learning all the time and it is time to learn about the tail housings on 727 transmissions. You see, I am putting a 440 in my Changer, it had a 400 in it as equipped with shifter on the column. I am installing right now the shifter on the floor and have come to realize that the transmission tail housing does not have the mounting ears on the bottom of the housing for the lower shifter support mount :shruggy:. Is there a way around this, such as an after market mount that would get mounted in a different place or will I be looking for a tail housing with the mounting ears? As always, you guys are great.Thanks for being here when I need educated. Steve
I'm not aware of any aftermarket way to attach the lower bracket. :shruggy:

What kind of shifter are you installing? I've used both the B&M Mega shifter and the Turbo Action Cheeta. Neither one of them required attaching supports to the tail housing. Bob
Hi Bob, This tail shaft housing is just stock. I just learned that this housing that I need is for early model B & E body cars with the sifter on the floor. I just came back from AMMCO, I have a friend that works there, he said that they can be found and has a feeler out for one this minute. He even saw one on the enternet for around $25 plus $20 to ship,said not to get it yet, will try to find one local. Steve
When I bought my car, it had a thick metal strip connecting the shifter rod to that big hole at the aft left corner of the trans by the pan. It worked fine but it didn't have a bushing in it and was wearing away at the rod. If you have the bracket, I would just get that other tail housing.
you can replace the tailshaft housing while the transmission is mounted in the car. find a tailshaft housing that has the casted mounting holes for the shifter bracket, and replace the old one with the new one.
if you have any questions regarding the swap, let me know and I can talk you through it... ah hell.. here you go:
1) remove driveshaft (if there)
2) remove trans x-member
3) remove the 7 bolts holding the tailshaft housing to the trans
4) remove the two screws to the access plate on the lower part of the transmission
5) remove the speedometer pinion gear
6) take a pair of snap ring pliers and spread apart the retainer ring from the output shaft bearing (found in the access hole)
7) remove the tailshaft housing away from the trans and slide slowly/carefully away
hints:
you may have to tap on the tailshaft housing to free it loose from the seal it has made with the gasket
you may want to replace that gasket
make sure there is little to no fluid in the trans when doing this or you will be cleaning alot
when removing the housing away from the trans, the parking rod may cause you some issues, just some little tugs will get it out... (the issue is getting the parking rod seated when you put the new tailshaft housing in hehehe)

Before removing the tailhousing place the shifter in Park and turn the driveshaft until the parking pawl drops into position and locks the shaft, this makes it easier for the parking rod to slide through its opening.
Whats the torque for the 7 bolts when reinstalling?
24 ft. lbs.
sounds good im hoping to do a trans service along with the swap, then do a sway bar swap and finish my gauges
