Title: So Todd Wilson Emails Me A Link To An Auction In Nebraska........
Post by: MOPARHOUND! on August 01, 2007, 02:46:04 PM
....with 2 69 Chargers to be auctioned off.  Seems he got wind of the auction through the Charger grapevine, his being one of the main cogs behind putting on the All Dodge Charger Weekend meet in El Dorado, Kansas every year:

http://www.chargerfever.com/eld2007flyer/eld2007flyer.htm

So I clicked on the link (has since expired) to a living estate auction in a little town of around 300 people in Nebraska called Weston, about 45 minutes west of Omaha.

The pic's looked intriguing, and tired of walking with the 496 down (cam timing gear bolt backed off) in the 71 Charger R/T, and another Charger needing an engine, decided it would be worth looking into.  Have went without a mopar to cruise in a couple of times in the past, missing the whole show/cruise-in season, and didn't want it to happen again.

One was an R4 Charger Red with red interior and black top, 318/Auto:

The other was a 69 318/Auto Charger, triple green, worn around the edges, but complete:

After a bit of convincing, plans were made, and with a promise of going to the Omaha Zoo if we bought no Charger after traveling roughly 250 miles one way, I loaded up the wife and 2 year old, and hooked on the car trailer.

It was hot, and nowhere to sit with everyone thinking the Charger front ends were park benches.  Made inspecting the cars a bit difficult.  That, and a bunch of Nebraska mopar fanatics that showed up, but I will say most were courteous.

Red 69 Engine shot, arguably a survivor, only change was when the 318's manifold crossover clogged, the owner changed out the automatic choke for a manual:

Speaking of owner, this is Charlie with his pride and joy.  Walked into Olsen Dodge of Omaha Nebraska around April of 1969 and ordered the 69 Charger the way he wanted.  The car still has the original window sticker, with a sticker price of over $3,900.  Fairly steep, considering 383 Road Runners could be had for less than $3,000.  Sadly, 38 years later a stroke would take part of his eyesight, and he would be no longer able to drive legally:

The driver side seat had the middle most insert replaced, top and bottom.  Other wise the seat covers are original.

Car has roughly 50% of it's original paint, and the black top is original.  Charlie used a car cover the first year after he bought it, until his garage was finished, then it was garaged from then on.  So particular was he, that he would not leave the car set out over night.  Did WONDERS for the interior and paint.  Dents in the driver's side door, and passenger side quarter necessitated body work over the years.  The car was thus painted along the lower sides and the areas needing repair.  The car is R4 "Charger Red", and looks red in the pic's, but in person it looks orange to me:

When the factory AM radio failed, an Alpine stereo was installed sometime in the 80's.

Those are the original 69 Charger manual, and warranty papers from Olsen Dodge in the seat.  Found the receipt in the envelope for the car's first oil change, straight 20W Penzoil.  Charlie said that is all he ever used in the car from day 1.  I checked with the local auto parts store, and they said it was still available on special order.

Notice the speaker in the passenger side door panel in this pic:

I asked Charlie about a broadcast sheet, and he had never heard of what a broadcast sheet was.  We lifted the rear seat bottom enough to look under it, and there it was, and it matched the car.  :2thumbs:

He could not remember the last time someone had ridden in the back seat (if at all).

Charlie was known for tinkering.  If you notice, in this pic, he had added a 3rd brake light on the rear shelf.  The car also had a giant whip antennae, and then later a more conventional CB antennae on the rear bumper (visible in some other pic's if you look close), and an antennae for an early style car phone.  Seemed like there were 10 AAA stickers on the car in various places, and some type of mini foam alien head on the radio antennae.

The Red 69 was ready for a local show, but the Green Charger car had been parked since 1980 by Charlie as a parts car, purchased for $300.  He worried he might never be able to get parts for the Red Charger, and latched onto it.  Fortunately all he needed over the years for the Red Charger was an alternator, leaving the Green Charger otherwise intact.  It was only moved from his attached to to a detached garage while he owned it.  The Green car did have power steering, and a console as pluses the Red Charger lacked, but the engine was locked up from setting.  Further it was going to need in my estimation both quarters, a trunk floor, and dents in both fenders & one door repaired, seats recovered etc etc.

I thought I would go $15,000 on the Red Charger, and $6000 on the Green Charger.

The Red Charger was auctioned first.  At first, I stayed on the sidelines, and the bidding went to $13,000 fast, and then stalled.  I kept hoping to hear $13,500, but the auctioneer kept asking for a $14,000 bid.  Finally I gave in and raised my hand for $14,000.  The top bidder then went $15,000, and I began to have my doubts.  Finally they asked for $15,500, and reluctantly I raised my hand, thinking if the other guy wanted it bad enough he could have it.  If he had bid another 5 cents he was going home with it............

He bowed out, and we loaded it  :2thumbs::

The Green Charger shot past $6000, and kept going.........it finally sold for $9300  :o .  Charlie's $300 investment paid off well in the long run.  :P

Last I heard the Green Charger stayed in Nebraska, and is getting a 440 transplant.

The Red Charger rode home well.  We stopped 3 times on the way home, and I kid you not, all 3 times we had total strangers, 5 in all, standing by the trailer with stories to tell, or making inquiries.

You know, maybe the world needs another General Lee, after all the car already looks orange to me..........................LOL..................Nawww.......

:icon_smile_cool:

(For those that have been patiently waiting for all the pic's to get up, Post Away!  And thanks!)

Yeah, think I paid a premium for a 318 Charger, but it had the red interior that really appealed to me, with power brakes.  No A/C and no P/S means 1 fan belt, keeping things simple.  I personally prefer manual steering, gives you more "road feel".

It is pretty much original.  Arguably a survivor.  I really like having the Alpine stereo, and the choke isn't that big of a deal.

It is tempting to paint it black with red R/T stripe and badging, and install a 440/727/8-3/4, but I would probably get roasted for it.

It has a 318/904/8-1/4 set up now, with the rear having 2.71 gears.  Get in trouble on the freeway, and I'm not even trying.....haha........the high gearing has you cruising along at 70+ at such a low RPM.  More than double the gas mileage of the 496 in the 71 Charger R/T.  40 cents a mile to drive the 71, just for gas, ouch.

question:

What is that round knob to the left of the underdash "air" pull?.. and what was to the right of the radio looks drilled through the face plate?. all that extra tinkering,.. the antennas and rear brake light and those black speakers,.. need to go ASAP!
IMO...  :shruggy:

And what and where are all these other mystery cars?...  :popcrn:

It takes a long time, to put together a good uninterrupted thread like this one.  More than 2 hours in my estimation, by the time you edit all the pictures to fit the 200K max limit size on the website (you may notice the pictures vary in size and quality) and type/edit all the captions.  Just now had the block of time to do it.   Sometimes think I am an aspiring closet Mopar Mag writer and don't know it...........LOL...... .

The June show was the first time I had the car on the Interstate, and discovered how high geared 2.71's are.

PM me if your project needs a good home some day, save this survivor from being cloned an R/T........heh,heh........J/K on the clone part........ :icon_smile_wink: .

The round knob is for the manual choke on the carb.  To the right of the face plate is where one of the 10 (seemingly) AAA stickers were.  Look at the center cap on the steering wheel, there is also glue remains there from the back of the AAA sticker that was on it also.  The correct Dodge emblem is there in the center cap, just hidden by the old sticker glue.

I'm keeping the Alpine stereo in it for now.  Would be nice to eliminate the rear 3rd brake light, and the antique car phone antennae in the middle of the rear glass at the top.  The Mitsubishi floor mats will be coming out also, at least that is what I think they are.

Mystery cars?  Car stories, lots of car stories to be told.  Been in the hobby hoarding cars/parts since I was 13 years old and bought my first mopar (still have it).  My playground as a kid was a 7000+ car junkyard of all makes (Per Kansas City Star, Circa 1971).  27 years later, the threads that could be started are endless, but the time to do them all with the pic's is limited.  I'll leave it at that.

However, I do have another Charger rescue/near fist fight (yep, it's juicy) story on tap, with pic's, just haven't put it together yet, don't know if I will have the time.  And......

.........this other Charger is in better shape than his buddy was:  http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,10714.0.html

It is actually a black car, may be differences in our monitors.  Black with blue interior, as shown on the fender tag.  Link to the fender tag info is in the first post of the thread you are referring to.......as well as his buddy's that I have yet to post the story for.  Hemigeno took the time to decode the fender tags in that thread, with others having some input later in the thread on the black car.

The steering wheel was sent out for restoration, and turned out great.  It is in another thread here on the board:

http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,14855.0.html

In all likelihood the black car will be relegated to a parts car.  As posted in the above link, the black 69 Charger 99% of people would consider hopeless.  Fenders, doors, quarters, interior, floors, etc. etc. are junk.  Cars like it are the ones the General Lee jumpers should be using in their shows after a bunch of orange paint instead of real R/T's  :brickwall:.

When I first started looking for a mopar my dad heard about an auction out in wyoming WAY out in the boonies  and they were auctioning off a 69 road runner. We went out a day before and the guys widow let us crawl around on the car. It was a original 383 car. The engine was out and it was a '73 383 completely disasembled. The interior was wrapped in garbage bags and completely eaten by mice, but the body on it was amazingly nice, the original black paint looks great. We drove back up there the next day for the auction. When the road runner went up we didn't even get a chance to get a bid in. It shot from 1K to 8K in a few seconds. It finally went for 11,500. The guy payed WAY too much for it. If that same car were to go on ebay today I would guess it would go for 6-7 thousand.

Thanks Chad!  Hope all is well at the University.

I was stopped waiting to turn into a local business, going to check out a 1970 Dodge Sweptline truck in the parking lot with the rare "Dude" package Friday night about 10PM.  I look in my rear view mirror.....and it's filled with a 69 Charger's grille and headlights.....what are the odds of that......in the "wild" as Bull would say.

It was Igozumn, first time I had ever seen him and his car in the same place at the same time (click on little pic to see big pic), his "Day 2 look" makes my 318 Charger look a little wimpy:

Chad, don't know if you have seen Igozumn's Charger R/T SE in the post below yours before, but it is a refugee from Jerry Juneman's yard in Hays, KS.  He has done a lot of work on it to get it on the road, with a ways to go yet.  It is a rare Turquoise/White Roof/White Stripe/White interior car originally.

Good to see you posting igozumn!  Post some more all ready, 3 posts ain't cuttin' it.........!  :nana:  J/K

Hope to see you and your Charger around some more in the future.

Finally got around to taking a pic of fender tag.  What's with the V08 (Delete Vinyl Top) and V1X (Black Vinyl Top)???

Need to get it registered on Chris' 69 Charger Registry, and a pic sent to 69CoronetRT for his 69 St Louis VIN file.

The V08 comes from the exterior/interior color. The C6R interior was not recommended with the R4 exterior. When you had a combination that was not recommended, it was called paint/trim waiver and was coded V08.

Here's a link to Chris' showing recomended combinations: http://www.1969chargerregistry.com/gallery/interioroptions/1_9_2007_10_02_01_AM_0004

Thanks for the tag posting. They all help! Great story too. Since this red/red car came out of Nebraska, I wonder of the owner was a Cornhusker fan.....

Well, things could be alot better :icon_smile_blackeye: :icon_smile_dissapprove: (I have to graduate by mid Dec. or I am out, but I still have my masters degree to fall back on in the wose case).  I am trying to weigh my options and hanging in there as best I can (my nerves are shot).......

I don't remember the RT/SE that you mentioned, but that may be because it sold before I got to the backyard area.  I really wished I would have taken pics of the backlot as it would have shocked quite a few people by the amount of "parts car" projects that he had back there.  The RT/SE looks like a nice project.  You did not get rid of the white 71 RT did you?  Tomas still comments on the trip we took in in in 2006.  (He is finishing this month with his Ph.D. and going back to Hungry as a university assistant professor).

Please do, your interior is top notch, one of the finest examples out there.  How you dyed your console red is a great thread also.
