Title: A-833 Transmission Leak
Post by: 74ChargerRallye on July 13, 2006, 11:29:23 AM
I have an A-833 manual transmission that I just finished installing back into my 74 Rallye.  Unfortunately right after I had everything put back together I noticed a leak that I had not noticed prior to the disassembly.  The leak is flowing down the reverse linkage rod.  It appears to be coming directly from where the rod is connected to the transmission.  My question is this.... Is it most likely the o-ring that is bad, and if so, can this be replaced from the outside or will it require the transmission to removed in order to install and replace the o-ring?

Thanks  ??? ??? ???

The shift lever shaft seal is a rubber "O" ring on the inside of the trans, the trans must be removed and completely disassembled to replace it.

Since it's just about the last part to be removed on disassembly it's often overlooked when rebuilding a trans.

You might be able to get away by dropping the tranny alittle and pulling the side cover off.

Sad but true, to replace the O ring the trans needs to be removed and torn down. Just for kicks though, clean that rear side area of the trans and maybe with some crazy luck its leaking from the reverse light switch or reverse detent plug and working its way over to the shift shaft. Its a 1 in a billion shot though, good luck.
