Basically, when I start the car, the needle on the tic toc tac pegs all the way to the right and doesn't move. did I hook up something wrong?

Yes.....make sure the tach signal wire is hooked up to the negative (-) side of the coil

O.k. I think I did, maybe it's a bad connection.

if power & signal wires are reversed this could be the problem
