So apparently in Russia "the thing" is to have a camera on your dash. They say it's for safety, to catch potential insurance frauds, etc...but anyway...some crazy things happen:

I think that they run cameras due to scamming and insurance purposes. I can honestly say that I have no plans to ever drive in Russia.

I read a little more about the Russian dashcam obsession. Road rage is a huge problem, but the Russian legal system will do nothing about if there isn't proof (same thing with questionable car accidents), so weary drivers are covering their asses just in case.

What's wrong with dash cam? If cops have them why shouldn't citizens be able to as well? There are some crooked cops and I'm sure dashcam w/audio would be helpful.

nothing wrong, really, as far as im concerned. Just interesting why this is such a trend in Russia. I would have one, but a) im sure it would record conversations I'd rather not have recorded and b) I take tons of pics with my phone, yet I hardly ever look at them or download them cuz im too lazy...let alone going through hours of video from my weekly commute.

Its good idea to cover your a$$. I should get one installed in my car, Ive seen some crazy local idiot drivers. One guy blew past STOP sign and then I bumped into him and he comes out of car "dude, you totally hit me". I was gonna hit him for real-in the face!

I've seen many of those videos already and always wondered why so many people over there have them. I guess now I know.

Does anyone know if anyone in that black SUV survived after getting pasted broadside by the truck? Can't imagine anyone lived.

If its the one where the truck basically disintegrated, story is the biggest body part the found was the lower part of the guys leg. When that video first came out a while ago there were links to the news reports and other info. I have been watching these Russian dash can videos for sometime and they are fascinating

This reminds me a few years ago I was driving to work in winter time and there was guy who ran a stop sign. He was on side street and ran stop sign pretty much right in front of me, lost control of the car and hit the curb and even though I've tried to avoid him I still hit him. He was just too close to me and I didn't expect him to run stop sign and cut me off like that.
He gets out of the car and he's like "dude, you hit me" Really wanted to punch him in the face but I didn't want to be late to work. A dash cam would be very handy in situation like this one.
