i work in the live theatre industry(20+ years) and just took swearing as part of the job .someone said the other day jeez you swear a lot ,got to thinking every "professional" show we have  ever done everyone  both male and female  use the  F bomb every second word.both stars and "backstage " all use it in every possible context even over the house speakers during sound checks etc.  anyone else work in a profession where people swear all the time?

It's more or less the people you're with. Working construction, I might hear it or use it once a day.  On other jobs, I might use it or hear it once a month.  I have learned patience and don't stress out much, and the people I'm with have as well.  Makes for fairly pleasant working conditions :2thumbs:

In broadcasting, oh yeah, common.

It reminds me of "Dude, why do you have to swear so much?"
"What the f*** are you talking about?"
"OK, Dude ... have it your way"

Dino

In autobody swearing IS the language, in health care...not so much.  They don't like it when we drop f bpmbs around the patients.   :D

Just wait until you work on your Charger's Wiring again....Or work on any car again for that matter. You WILL make up cuss words for some of this poorly designed sh*t..Oops, did it agian.

True that in broadcasting.......at least until the PC nazis killed off everything except robot like obedience.. I worked for ABC News for 22 years and swearing was quite prevalent. Then Disney bought the network and swearing, looking at a female coworker or voicing a personal opinion with colleagues became a suspension or attempted termination offense. During my 6 years in the Navy you weren't a true brother of the sea unless you swore like a sailor, got into bar fights, smoked and drank coffee. The only guys I knew back then who cussed more than squids were Marines.

True.....but you had to add "top of your lungs".

I rarely swear, so......when I do....people notice without using full lung power. Meh....guess I'm just somewhat lazy.:D

I also work in the live event industry and can fully back up the OP's statement... It is honestly astonishing when someone doesn't swear profusely about everything.

I stand by the fact that you have to be in the industry because:

A) You truely love it
B) You are ok with the fact that some people will ask you when you are going to get a "real job"
C) You are at least partially insane...  :D

I have been very fortunate to not have to work with those considered "Pop Stars" or the semi-pro competitions.   Lots of egos still though.

I cuss and bitch when working in construction AND when working on cars. Its my way of letting off steam. I'm not the kind of guy that bottles up all of my anger then wigs out and kills the neighborhood.

:iagree: 100%. I work in a warehouse, if you don't swear there your not doing it right. When i work on my car, or any car, I swear all the time. I think I even make up swear words.
Its just the way it is. ;D
Flatback Fanatic, Kurt  , MN

Lighthorseman

I remember waaaaaay back when, on a course with the Armed Forces, the guy in charge was some sort of anti-swearing fanatic.

One thing that cracked me up was his definition of profanity - "The end result of the efforts of a weak mind trying to express itself forcefully."

That thought always kind of followed me, but became especially poignant when I transitioned to Law Enforcement.  Now, I find that NOT swearing sets me apart from my... "clients".

It's hilarious, too.  When such colourful invective isn't part of your regular vocabulary, people know there's something "wrong" with you - they just can't quite put their finger on it.  :D

F8-4life

People who get offended at others sswearing I dont understand, like who really cares?? but as for the swearers themselves, it doesnt help your cuase to use the same word repeatedly. The only honest way to cuss is if you do it on your own account, not just if everyone around the industy has a habit. BUt cussing does have good purpose uunder the proper individual situation.

John_Kunkel

I'm one of those guys who can "turn it off" when necessary; in my usual blue-collar work environment we all (with the exception of some Bible-thumpers) cussed a lot and knew which ladies would tolerate it and which wouldn't. When I did office duty I could go for days/weeks without uttering a single obsenity.

BTW, I differentiate between swearing/cursing (damn, etc.) and cussing (f**k, etc.)
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Same here. Out in the field I probably swear more than my workers. In the office with the office girls, boys, clients, etc... I'm on my best behavior.

Agreed, keeping the wolves at bay is key and flexibility is one means of keeping them away.  As a freelancer, I understand this and do everything from corp. to large Electronic Dance Festivals - keeps things interesting!

lots of swaering at my work. me and another guy have started occsionally talking and swearing like arabs you see in convienence stores haha. its pretty funny intentionally screwing up words and phrases using bad accents

bull

Where I work as a mechanic it seems to depend on the person. Some guys almost never swear, some use it sparingly for emphasis and a few others can't seem to get through a single sentence without seeing how many f-bombs they can drop and still make some sense. I can appreciate the emphatic use of profanity when the situation calls for it but to completely lace sentences with it makes a person look like an idiot. Other than that I rarely hear profanity being used or use it myself because I just don't hang around people that have that type of mindset outside work.

Side note: IMO, words have more power than people give them credit for these days. There are too many words being misused/overused and so many words have lost their meaning and intensity. Just look at the way words like hater, bigot and racist get thrown around so frequently now.

twodko

My sentiments exactly. Well said.
