Here's some bad news I didn't learn about until yesterday (Timken Co.)

Apparently this happened two years ago (so pardon my ignorance) but I was surprised to learn that after 82 years in business Timken bearings are now being made in China. :rotz: I bought what must have been some of the last few US-made Timken bearings when I redid the front brakes on my Dakota a couple of years ago but didn't hear about this until yesterday. A coworker was telling me he recently tried buying Timken and that's when he found out, and he's usually pretty up on all this stuff. There are still some bearings that are made in the US I believe but I don't know how many of them are readily available over the counter. Either way, I hate seeing such an iconic name go. :brickwall:

I was wondering what this bearing was called, but both bearings in the front of my charger have Japan etched on them.  I am the third owner, but the car just sat unrestored when the second owner took possession of it, so technically I would be the second owner when it's complete.  I don't know if they were ever replaced, or even the possibility of both being replaced.   :shruggy:

Is one worse than the other?

By the same token, I've yet to see/hear any angry threads about cars and parts being made in Canada... :scratchchin:

IMO, I wouldn't worry about a Japanese bearing. If you can't get a US version, then Japan is a very close second, if not equal. Right now I would stay away from Chinese versions, next in line for quality but improving rapidly and I would absolutely refuse to use bearings from Vietnam or India as they are total crap.

Same with German bearings. However, when it comes to German products, if anything goes wrong with them they'll tell you it's user error on the part of the stupid American because Germans don't make mistakes.

This is all part of the whole thing to do with progress and business in the world.  Like many of you, I am worried about my country not keeping up.  I see the businesses moving out and also the quality change.

Just a thought to put in the back of your mind.
Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

60 million is peanuts.   Check out the numbers spent since 2001 on war(s).    :RantExplode:

The amount isn't really the issue with that. The main beef with spending $60 million in tax-payer money on Syria is the small principle of it being wasted on people who want us all dead.
