I have a 2001 Dodge Ram 2500 diesel that is good in the snow. I finally landed a full time job 20 miles from home. The wife is in a 2003 PT Cruiser that does not do well on our icy hills & turns at 8500' elevation but it gets mileage than my truck. I was looking at the Subaru WRX sti & Mitsubishi Evo. Anybody own a performance AWD they really like? My budget is about $25,000 which means I'm looking at used AWD's. Don't shoot me for not looking at MOPAR....just looking around. Thanks! TC

I personally haven't driven either car, but I think your looking at the right cars.

Not exactly a performance powerhouse, but my wife bought an 07 AWD Caliber R/T a few years back for that very reason.   She only gave 13K for it (with 25K miles on it) and it has more features than any car I've ever owned.    Best bang for the buck in an AWD I've ever seen.

my 300c is AWD and 99% of the time wish it was not :) Last weekend I installed new exhaust and it is awsome btw. I have driven plenty in the snow, handles excellent only thing for deep snow it needs ground clearence. but handiling is top notch for what is excpected for a car, of course it is no truck.
Restoring a charger is like a saying I heard along time ago "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it".... Jesus I wish I could remember who said that...

you might take a look at New Dodge Charger AWD. Google  Detroit News. they just did a review of one, they were impressed. I'm willing to bet there are some out there that meet your criteria.

My son swears by his Patriot.  It's a stick and gets over 30 on the highway.  The extra two wheels kick in when needed, or you can lock them in full time.
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Just hope you don't EVEr have to mount just ONE NEW tire on ANY of those so-called AWD vehicles.....

Hadda guy come in the shop with a piece of metal sticking out the sidewall of his R.R. tire.
I mounted the almost new spare, and WHAM! noise coming from transfer case area. Put the half worn out tire back on with the slow leak and noise gone.
Automatic sh*t sucks. Gimme a good 'ol fashioned lever in the floor at the transfer case.

I'll hang my head and say.. I drive my girl friends Subaru with snow studs..
drifts real good! I've also had pretty good luck with jeeps, they drift even better.

Here's another vote for a Subaru. We've got a 2012 Outback Limited 2.5 (my wife's car). It's pretty much unstoppable in the snow. Good fuel economy (24-31 mpg mixed). Very comfortable on the long hauls. All the bells and whistles. Great value for under 30 grand (I think we paid $28k, w/sunroof, w/o nav).

If you're hung up on "buying American" (if there is such a thing anymore), it's assembled in Indiana.

It's no sports car though. Definitely more sporting options available in the Subaru line-up if that's what you're after.

When the time comes to replace my beater, I'll be looking hard at WRX's. It will most certainly be used. Key when shopping for these is to find an un-modded one that hasn't been hacked-on.

Im buying a new 4x4 Tacoma.
THat will fare up pretty well in the snow

But if you're sticking with a car specifically, you can score a used Evolution. Id get the 2006 and later because it has variable valve timing

My son got bought the Patriot for $15K with 16,000 miles on it.   I think it was a little over a year old.
Has over 80 K on it now.

As far as being "hung up" on buying American, our extended family doesn't sent it's car money overseas.  Last I knew, Suburu is headquartered in Japan. Doesn't matter where it's assembled or serviced or anything else... When you buy one, your American dollars are converted to Yen and they laugh at you all the way to the Bank of Tokyo!

here is a nice snow car. 1000hp.awd. 9 seconds in tarmac.no its not that new :icon_smile_wink:

subarus are ok, but rust fast and outbacks can get costly on maintenance.

I heard 300 chryslers suspension is actually e-model merc in the back and s-model on the front, if so then is the awd also a 4-matic merc type?

bordin34

Get the STI, they are actually pretty simple to work on and the aftermarket is huge.  Just be sure to get a tune if you do any mods to it.

My brother has a AWD Pontiac Vibe.  He travels a lot for his job and gets around 30mpg.  He loves it.

Over-rated. Saw one driving the other day, was not impressed. Looks just like any other import with a body kit on it.
