This may seem like a dumb question. But I need to do a compression test on an engine. The problem is that its not in a car, and it does not have a transmission on it. I tried spinning it over by hand and just could not spin fast enough to get a good reading. Does anybody have any ideas? or is my best bet a leakdown test in place of it?

Dino

Got a helper?  Stick an impact wrench , or power drill, with a socket on there instead of trying to spin it by hand.

Without a starter attached you'll never spin it fast enough to get an honest reading and, besides, the engine should be warm for a good test.

The only other alternative is a leakdown tester.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Doc, I tried a impact and it didn't actually spin the engine over, and i did not want to keep going and risk the bolt breaking.

Thats what I was afraid of John. Not what I wanted to hear, but hey, At least i have a answer. Thanks.

Dino

I figured it was worth a shot but alas it doesn't work.

Oh well, all you have to do is quickly bolt up a transmission!   :icon_smile_big:

Or just a 4 speed bell housing with a starter

NOS is nice, turbo's are neat, but when it comes to Mopars, there's no need to cheat...

i did a leakdown test today. the worst hole was less than 8% and the best was 2% so it should be pretty good. considering the good range is from 10% down to 30%  :2thumbs:

I'd be happy with those leakdown numbers Russ  :2thumbs:

I was gonna say.... NO! DON"T USE AN IMPACT! That won't spin it. (only break it)  Looks like you got what you needed with the leakdown.
