Exciting day up here in CT as we loaded up our Charger and headed over to the painters!   It's been a bit of a long road as we were ready 8 months ago with a different body guy who strung us along for 6 months... "call me next week and I'll get you in"  :brickwall:   so we found a new body/painter who happens to be even closer to our house and ready to jump on the car.  Then we got 34 inches of snow and we lost a few weeks.   :-\   but today was the day!!! :2thumbs: :coolgleamA:   took a little bit to fire up being 32 degrees, but fun to have pictures with all the snow!  took a little video off loading but can't get it to load right.  Our New "440" hood call outs (Phoenix Graphics) arrived just in time as well as the new Bumble Bee tail stripe so we are excited that the painter will install them after paint. I know the paint looks good in the pictures now, but it's almost sandpaper on the roof as it sat for years (by PO) with a tarp or something and it messed up the already poor paint job.  lots of little dents and bruises along the doors, but we're confident with our new guy.  he's about 2 miles from our house so I'll be living there taking pictures and making any last minute changes..... we're keeping it Sublime with gloss black stripes on hood and the bumble bee tail with bee gloss black!

I bet you are stoked!  :ricky:  :ricky:

I think the proper white callouts will look much better. Are you going to put the correct stripe back on?

Agree completely that the white 440 will look best, and yes, we ordered the correct 1970 tail stripe!!  The body guy will be fixing the rear marker cut outs so the 1970 lights actually fit!!  then we can have the tail stripe line up correctly!!  Last painter by previous owner didn't take off ANY trim so it was cool to see the passenger door blue (original color) and driver door Bronze, tail extension area... Primer! :RantExplode:

The painter will be painting the black call outs over as well as extending them to the windshield as they were for 1970!!  :drool5:

if the previous owner of your car would have put the tailstripe on any further forward it would have been a Sailstripe.  Hope all goes well at the painters!  :2thumbs:

Is there a suggested wait time for the base/clearcoat to cure before the callouts should go on?  Does the paint 'tighten up' over a period of a few weeks/months?

The factory slapped the stuff on right away, but they had different paints (lacquer).

Great question.... I'm going to ask the painter what he knows about this, but anyone else have suggestions??

Once all the solvents have gassed off it'll be ready for decals.  Depending on paint and drying method time/ this may take a while.  My advice, put it on last when everything else is done.

LOL well a little less.  I like to bake the paint slowly and then I leave it alone while I start assembling things that don't touch paint.  Once that's done I give it another bake cycle, summer sun works great here, and then I start wet sanding the whole thing.  Again I let it sit for a little while before I polish.

If you force it, it'll look exactly the same...for a while...and then the scratchesand imperfections rear their ugly head.

Thanks Dino!
I appreciate the info.  We are so excited to have it off for paint I'm sure i didn't ask enough questions, but this new guy does great work!!!
Will plan to bring it home and jump on the insulation under carpet and wiring while the paint cures a little longer.   Also switching the rear to a nice 8-3/4 with posi!!!  :2thumbs:
By then it may be perfect to add the Decals!
Cheers

Sounds good!

Are you planning on having it wet sanded and polished or simply sand and polish out imperfections? (dust, runs,...)

Yeah, a good wait time before stripes/decals is about a month or so. Let the paint cure. You'll have PLENTY to do while waiting!  :yesnod: :icon_smile_big:

We had my car base coated (four coats) in a day and then layed out the bee stripes and painted them on late the same afternoon and let it sit over night. Put three coats of clear on it the next morning and started the color sanding and buffing out 48 hours later.  We used R-M base (could not get PPG to match the correct color) and cleared with PPG 2021. Came out beautiful.

Best of luck on your paint and the rest of your project. Happy to see another Charger saved!

Thanks for all the info guys!!  We can to wait to see how it looks and jump on putting back together.   :2thumbs:  we certainly have LOTS to do so we can let the paint cure!  Will keep the pictures flowing as the body work and paint prep begins!!!

Stopped by the painter today and they are in the swing of things now that the body man is back from vacation!!   :2thumbs:   they aligned the doors and hood and found some Nice spots from the previous owner, but just started blocking the passenger side.   I posted a question in the "paint body trim" section, but need a measurement of the rear marker lights for a 1970 from the bumper indentation to edge of light.  he started laying out the hole (1969 panel) but I believe he went forward...  :shruggy:

Not if you saw it in person!!  LOL.   Like Daren said on Graveyard Carz "I need some sea sickness pills" it was so wavy and bubbly!   :smilielol: :smilielol:

Who else is here in CT?  Maybe end of summer we can have a cruise!!!   :2thumbs:

Stopped this morning to drop off some more parts and see the progress.   Passenger side completely prepped for primer and by end of today the drivers side will be too!  he completed moving the rear marker lights (thank you A6USMC Brian for the info), added the trunk springs we bought a year ago so no more wood holding open the trunk!  Next week he will jump on the hood, roof, and trunk lid. what a good feeling to have the doors hung correctly, opening /closing, and not sagging!!  :2thumbs:
now picture time!  :popcrn: :popcrn:
