I traded1  and a half acres of land that I purchased 15 years earlier for 8 grande. The land was in another province  Quebec  and I live in Ontario, I was going to build a house on it but divorce and work made the land just someting that I paid taxes on..So i got  the 74 charger ,rotisserie resto, 440, not # matching ,1st place car show winner B5 blue for a straight trade with me paying 300 bucks for the lawyer to do the searching...Worst thing was after we shook hands I had to wait for slow ass lawyer to do all the paperwork and missed the first Moparfest...Always a grin when I drive it

I paid $1100 for my '71 SE 383-2V in '86. It was in very good condition but needed brakes and exhaust.

71 SE3834V

Paid $3250 in June 2011.
71 Charger SE w/about 18 options including A/C, 3 spoke woodgrain/rimblow whl & console/leather seats. 72,000+ mi.
383 4v
Matching #'s, build sheet included.
Pretty much a survivor car. Was stored inside for 15-20 yrs. Car is about as complete as you can get w/only the decklid trim & badge missing on the outside along w/the center of steering whl & cassette deck on the inside. Saw a cass deck for sale at a swap meet for $350 but no funds for something like that.
Condition is good. Solid, only hole is the inner drivers fender (below the battery of course), soft spot in fender & roof, only small amount of surface rust in the trunk, rear window. Some body filler in the quarter from being "tapped". Paint & chrome rough. Nice driver.
Have invested about $1700 into it so far to make it roadworthy.

A couple of years ago i bought a 74 Charger Rallye, 400HP auto #s matching, buckets/console, with 9 1/4 rear.  Complete car in original paint with 66k miles.  Only problem it sat outside for 20 years so there is rust in the lower quarters, bottom of doors, and drivers floor pan.  I paid $4,000 and that was too much for a project but it was exactly what I was looking for even with the rust.

I better not say how much I got it for.  Somebody would  :faint:

I still own my 4th and 6th 3rd gen cars. The others have gone down the road. All were purchased as drivers but one. The Most ever paid was $600. The lowest category you have $2000+, so you don't want to hear from the cheap-asses I guess

Bought it September 2012. 1973 Charger SE, 400 4bbl, not sure if it is numbers matching, but all stock accesories including stock air cleaner, good condition, just two rust spots, a lot of door dings, interior in good shape except drivers seat and carpet. Power windows kinda work....The car runs and drives. I paid $3,000. A pic of this car is my avatar.

Purchased my 73 SE in 2003 for $17000. It has 400 magnum with 727 auto. My car had 2765 miles on it when I found it. Fully documented, with all factory stickers, inspection markings, etc.
A survivor purchased from a private collection. It was appraised as being museum quality. It is classified as a reference model. Highly optioned. everything works. Original to the point of all factory installed belts, hoses, tires, A/C, still with the car. Original factory paint, interior looks factory fresh. I know it was more costly than most but it has provided me with 10 years of basically trouble free driving (near 22 K now) and pleasure. worth every penny in my book.

My '74 Rallye - Bought in 1992, 360 4spd, bucket seat and console car non matching engine or drive train, but had a dealer installed hood tach too, paid $700. with rust in the rear quarters, and minor rust in the front fenders. Very fixable car as the rest was very solid.

My '72 S.E. - Bought in 2004 and paid $1,500. for it, was a life time Arizona car, only needed a trunk floor. Was a 400 automatic, bucket and console car. ALL numbers matching. Just needed carb work to get running.

I didn't go under the  $ 2000 mark cause I figured ithe story would told in the description . Most important, is that it makes for some great charger conversation.

It's great reading all the stories in your descriptions..  Someone should start a poll for each generation.

People want more than 2 grand for a 2nd gen that needs new everything from the door back.  :brickwall:

Still good stories. The poll won't be very acurate though.

71 Charger B5 blue with blue interior with black vinyl top. The car was listed for sale in the local "auto classified" paper the week of Christmas a few years ago. Originally a 318 column shift auto, 4 wheel drum brake, A/C car.  Purchase price was less than I paid for the new dash pad!  :smilielol: So being a plain jane car it was the ideal car for some upgrades without ruining the value of the car!  I started out the build as a "junkyard day 2 build".   Started hunting parts for a few years and found a 73 power bulge hood, 72 440, 72 8 3/4 rear end, rallye gauge set-up, and console shift set-up.  Then decided to make a few upgrades to modernize it a bit, like 4 wheel disc brakes, modern headers, and modern A/C system and modern rubber.   It is getting really close to being back on the road.  So the next step is to drive it and enjoy it while I continue hunting for an R/T, Superbee or Ramcharger style hood.

So far I've counted around 18 cars under the $2,000 mark just from guys that posted.  Who knows how many others that couldn't vote and didn't post.   It would be nice to see a real poll but from what I can see so far I would say more than 50% will fall into the under $2,000 mark.  Then again, seems like these cars are going up in value and will be less deals out there under 2k these days.     :scratchchin:   Brigond, fix this poll brother.    :yesnod:     :icon_smile_wink:

what is the point of this thread?.......To see the increase in Value through the years of the 3rd gen cars?.....
Or to see what the average price is currently?

Mostly for fun and great stories .  At first, I was thinking for current value . In hindsight  I should have limited the participants  to those who have purchased within the last 2 or 3 years.  So it turns out that the poll is closer to giving the values over the years . Also turns out that the posted stories are more informative  then the poll itself . By popular demand  ,  I did try to go back and adjust the poll so that folks who paid less than $2000 could participate but it would not let me change that part. (sorry bargain hunters) Darn! I guess I'm gonna have to  take "scientist " of my list of occupations .  :rotz:  So what did you pay  for the green machine?

The Other part that you should have asked is where did you buy the car......Geography has a huge part in the purchase price of a car......
Here in Ontario Mopar's are expensive...and 3rd gens are rare.....so prices are high

I bought my 71 R/T off of a poorly written Ebay add in Ingersoll Ontario, add simply said "dodge charger"........no description and poor pictures...I emailed him for details
I paid $6000 for a Project car.........Solid body, numbers matching 440 drivetrain ...BUT completely torn apart and looking rough ...LOL, All others that looked at it walked away without an offer being made.....I was looking for a 68/69 but after I went home and searched the 71 R/T I seen it was rare
He wanted $7500 and I could not talk him lower than $6000..I wanted to pay $4000......I wanted the car so whats $2000 for something you want ..yes I think I paid too much but at the time cars were going for stupid prices and Barret Jackson sold one for around $65,000 so I got caught up in it  ::)
the year was 2007.......

Up in Canada prices are higher. Looking back I probably paid too much initially, but the car was very solid and I was able to finish it off to my taste. I know I have more into it then I will ever get for it, but that is not the point. It is a car I plan to enjoy for many years to come.

I had a chance to buy a 73  back about 1998 for 800$.   It was a very nice 318 car with AC. Everything worked. Would have been a good driver but didnt think I needed another charger at the time. I also had a chance to buy a 71 RT 440 4 speed trakpak car for 2000$  that was running and driving but needed some work and turned it down. That was 1996 or 97.  I kick myself now for not buying either one. Especially the RT.

Wookie316

Actually that was just after I unloaded it to put it in my garage. It has been over a year since it has sat in its parking stall. It leaves again Wednesday to the body shop to Finish a few small detail things and some paint touch ups. So it will be back in the trailer for another ride. Next time I see it though, it will have the Superbee fender emblem, wheel opening moldings and front chin spoiler. Cannot wait for this snow to be gone. 18 miles last year was not enough.

Car has surface rust under the vinal top and one little dent on right fender. Car is light blue body white top with dark blue int. but wont be that when done  ;)

2006.  Rallye. 400 4 speed numbers matching. drove it home 50 miles but it needed a new clutch and rust fixed, interior redone,.  Got it with a banshee 4 wheeler and a 96 ram 1500 w/ a 5" skyjacker lift, crate motor, and other stuff.  i'd rather not say the price.... it was a VERY good deal.  :2thumbs:

I bought mine in 2011 for $7000, good solid car. It was tagged as a 440 mag R/T and thats what the guy thought he had but with some discussions and facts ie: VIN #'s I was able to prove to him that it was a regular car that was rebuilt (original 318 car) now it had a 400 4bbl 727 and the original 8 1/4 diff with 273 gears. He originally wanted $13k for it. I drove it for that summer and enjoyed the heck out of it but planed on a rebuild that winter. Well a year and a half later its almost done, its now a 440 6pack, 727 manual shift kit 9 1/4 sure grip with 3:55 gears Hooker tuned headers into 2 1/2" SS custom exhaust and slotted tips. I have tried to make it look as stock as possible as a real R/T car but shes not! Oh yeah did a a bit of body work too, quarters, rockers, stripped to bare steel and straightened everything!!!! I'm looking forward to this years cruises.
