Meteor(ite) in Russia

Looks like a number of people were injured and there were a lot of explosions, but it is not clear to me whether anything was recovered that hit earth.

Also have been keeping track of the other (bigger one - olympic pool) that is supposed to pass by us shortly.

I just saw a lot of footage of it on tv. Lot of surveillance video is pretty spectacular

Saw that on the news this morning & was thinking, "That sure isn't something I want to see on the way to work like those people over there in Russia."  

Some were quoted that they had thought it was an airplane accident or a missile. It was moving so fast I'd have first thought someone pushed a button, it has to be a missile. Speed is was traveling was supposed to be 19 miles per second.

Pretty wild videos of it, too.

Looks like there is a hole in the ice where something fell through.  I wonder if they will find a piece of it.  It is amazing how much destruction the blast did (more than 1200 injured).  Remember in 1989 (I think) when there was a close pass that these things could be pretty bad.  never thought about the shock wave.

That's pretty amazing stuff. Luckily it's not a common ocurrence. Life would be pretty hairy if that was the norm.

you would think someone could of tracked its direction and at least warned people it was coming???

Wouldn't that being like spotting a spec of dirt in the ocean?  Larger objects are easier to detect.  Neo's aren't an easy thing to detect.

We're not in the ocean, we're on land. There will always be vexation and unidentified flying objects!

We (people) have been trying to track as many of the earth crossing ones as possible, but as pointed out there are limits.  I remember a class 25 years ago when I was told that this was something we should be doing more regularly.  As far as tracking them after they come in, that is another issue.  They have a network in Australia to track the fireballs and locate the meteorites after they land.  It is pretty cool stuff, but a newly started program.

they have satellites that can read the headlines on a newspaper, but can't track something the size of a u-haul trk through the air???

We only have a small number of satellites and telescopes devoted to finding neo's.

I actually got a piece of Skylab . I worked for NASA for 15 years back in the 70-80s and one of the last boys  aboard brought back a small piece of aluminium and it was stamped into 7 medallions and i was awarded  a medallion .
