Non- R/T with 383 and dual exhaust?

My Charger project came to a grinding halt (no pun intended) and as soon as I get a situation sorted out (ex-wife came out of the past looking for more money...rertoactively) I'll be back on the job. My 68 Charger is a GG1 Green non-R/T model. It had a 383. According to the VIN decoder in one book, it had a 383 2-bbl. According to the fender tag, it had a 383 4-bbl. It has non-R/T dual exhaust. Would that be right for this car? It has the chrome console, automatic tranny, electric windows, and a/c. right now the front fenders are off, interior out, and no paint on the bod. It needs a ton of work but I love this car and will get it done. Thanks for any help for my question.

For 68: fender tag engine code 61 = 383-2bbl and 62= 4bbl.
VIN code G = 2bbl H= 4bbl (H code DOES NOT mean HP like some sources report. It just means 383-4bbl)

Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help. It has the G code for the VIN, 383 2bl but the 62 code for the fender tag 383 4 bbl. Go figure. I have acquired a 68 and 69 383 block for the rebuild and have the original tranny and build sheet which indicates it as a 323 sure grip. I hope to have it stroked with a .040 overbore. Do I know what I'm doing? Heck no but I'm having fun learning. Again, thanks for the help. I did check out the webiste, again thanks, and it indicates the dual exhaust came only on the 383 4 bbl. We have a mystery here. To make matters even more interesting, the factory inserted the first vin rivet over the first part and the title has it recorded wrong. Oh well this will be fun. I never knew him but the guy who owned it before selling it to a body shop committed suicide. Except for the stroker part of the deal, I plan to build it in a way he would appreciate. Like I said, everything about this car is a little different but I love it...her

Hmmmmm....Have you linked the BS to the VIN to the fender tag to the body to make sure everything is legit on this car? The BS could tie it all together.

Hi everyone. your responses have been great and inspiring me to get back into working on the car even though I have some challenges. As soon as I can get someone to show me how to post pics (I have a friend who might be able to do this) I'm going to do it. It has no paint and is really rough. I bought it from an insurance claims adjuster who used to be a body shop owner. He told me it only had "surface" rust. His idea of "surface" and mine turned out to be a bit different. Anyway, everything matched but I can't trust my eyes so tonight I'm going to go over the BS, vin, and fender tag again. The factory attached the vin plate with a rivet right through the first letter. Under the rivet it reads XP for the Charger. But, Missouri, and the title recorded it as SP which is problably going to cause me trouble when I can finally get this car on the road. It will be a ton of work but I love Chargers and I want to enjoy a car I had a hand in bringing back to life. Again, thanks for the help. It keeps me inspired.

Yes, yes, that is it. He has a pole barn and it was chock full of mostly Pontiacs, GTOs and clones. Sitting between them in the dark was this one rusty Dodge Charger. I think I paid $1200 for it maybe 10 years ago? For some reason, most of the rust is on the passenger side. It is GG1 Green, I like the color and love the car. I know next to nothing about restoration but I like learning. Are you familiar with the place in Holden?

Yeah, that's his name. Mike Seachrist. He has a shop in town and seems to do really good work but a bit on the high end. I like him personally but when I started working on the car I discovered it needs a trunk, the rear valance under the trunk, at least one quarter and sail panel (passenger side) floor boards are good, and both front fenders may have to go. I found lots of bondo as well. But it came with a tranny, all but one seat is actually in great shape, it needs a windshield, and the hood is not original. Anyway, I'm keeping her. I love this car and want to bring it back to life.

The last time I saw him, he was putting entire floor boards in a white 68 Dodge Charger. Nice car too. Next to it was a 70 Chevelle Super Sport. He was talking $40K for that car. I'd rather have the charger. He had a bunch of GTOs and some clones as well. From what I could tell, he did really good work but I couldn't afford him. If only I knew how to weld...
