Finish on 727 Dipstick tube and Pan

So, I've got all the surface rust cleaned off my trans dipstick tube, handle and pan.  How are they supposed to be finished.  Were they originally painted, plated or just bare metal?

The pans are bare stamped steel, the tubes appear to be coated with a medium or dark grey phosphate.
