can anyone tell me what has to be done to chrome so paint will stick? I have tried to find someone or shop to strip the chrome in order to paint it, no luck

So, you have a chrome k-member??  The only thing I can think of is to have it acid dipped.   You probably don't need to have all the chrome removed but you do need to rough up the surface so the paint will stick.  People have done this with chrome bumpers to finish them in body color.  Any one else got an idea???

I thought sandblasting takes it right off.  It takes everything else off.  Worth a shot :shruggy:

I'd try the media blasting first if it were mine.  I know its safe if done right but the acid dipping a K frame would make me leery.

I would like to see a picture before you remove the chrome please

Dino

Media blast, clean, degrease, powdercoat, install, never worry about it again.

Another vote to see a pic first!
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

I change my vote to blast.  Sounds safer and effective.

Have painted my share of chrome wheels and chrome motorcycle parts that go thru heat cycles, etc. Sand blast with a coarse media like black diamond so it gets deep profile and knocks off any loose plating, prime with etching primer, the good 2 part type, not from a spray can, a coat of epoxy primer to make it smooth, then paint. Never had a problem

If it is chrome plated, I would try selling it first. I don't doubt someone out there would pay for it, as a chromed K is a pretty unusual thing. Then you can get a painted relacement unit and not hassle with stripping it.

Just take it to a place that does chrome plating, they will strip it for you.   :2thumbs:

:iagree:

"unplating" is pretty simple, they should be able to do it pretty easily.

I'm with Dino on this one.

I have painted several chrome bumpers on trucks. Go over chrome with DA with 180 then prime it, water sand and paint.  Never had any problems with it.  It may be hard the sand the K member due to all the corners and crevices.
