I'm Canadian, they stopped making them as of today, Feb 4th.

Stores have been asked to adjust prices accordingly..banks would like the pennies back, if not, can still use them...stores don't have to accept them much longer anymore.

So, guess it's time to break open the jug of pennis I have and roll 'em up and cash 'em in...just my  :Twocents:...while I still have some!

Guess from now on I'll be paying a nickle for your thoughts.

Kinda curious how that's gonna work at the gas pumps?

You're going to get screwed. That's how it works.

Hope they kiss me first...

Well, no matter, $1.336 l ($5.06 gallon) can't hurt much more!

Oh yes it can, just wait and see.

I'd keep your pennies if I was you.

I have been a long-time advocate of scrapping the penny, can't happen too soon in the U.S.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Damn, now when I go to the pump and see that 3.99 9/10 wonder how I'm gonna pay?? No pennies anymore or 1/10th cent!?!@ :D

Only applies to cash transactions. For electronic Credit or Debit card transactions the penney still exists. The "physical" penny is gone...the "digital" peny remains. So if you pay by card nothing changes...pay by cash expect to get screwed by merchants who will never round down....their calculators only know how to add.

You americans are about to get screwed over big time....US merchant lobby groups have convinced the US government to allow merchants to surcharge your card transactions....the merchants managed to get regulation passed to force you the consumer to pay for their costs to accept cards....even though the costs of accepting cards are ALREADY baked into the cost of goods (like all operating costs).

mauve66

yeah, and debit cards were supposed to replace cash and make things better/safer years ago, now things cost more for using the card even though it lessens the risk of robbery since there is less cash in the store/station
oh yeah, and they charge you MORE than the store/station is being charged for the transaction so they can make money on it also

If I pay my cell phone bill in cash, I get charged a buck. :flame:  Some places want cash, others want electronic.  As a consumer, you're screwed out of your money either way.

polywideblock

did this years ago in Australia :yesnod: we lost 1c and 2c , now 5c is 1c and 10c is 5c . just as big a pain in the but ,fill your pocket with nothing.they "round up over 6c or down under 5c but EVERYTHING is 6c so they might as well just charge     10c because you don't get change :eek2: keep your pennies as they become collectors items when there all gone :2thumbs:

But then the nickle will become the next penny if you know what I'm getting at.

I was going to give my two cents on this thread, but on second thought I better hang onto it also.

Easy, they'll round up to the nearest nickel.

The penny and the nickle should both go away.

The penny costs like 2.4 cents to make and the nickle costs over 11.

Not to mention transportation costs and counting costs and Only god knows what.

I think I read that 100 or 200 million could be saved each year by doing this.

If they do away with small change, what are all those Feds who watch the money car when it rolls out of Philly gonna do? Flip hamburgers?

A lot of folks are counting on the penny being decommisioned. There's millions to be made in smelting high copper pre-83's for scrap.

In an ideal world the whole system will eventually change so that every price makes the single cent unnecessary....I believe that's the ultimate goal.

Kinda like those billion dollar bills in Africa! Singles, 5s, 10s, 10, and 100s are pointless...

Although, with no pennies will the 3rd world sweatshop workers get sizable raises? I mean, when you make (the equivalent of) $0.60 per day they will have to pay $0.65 the next time salaries go up.

I agree with John in that things would be much easier if there was one global currency based on gold.

What would dictate the price of a dollar?
On what dollar would the price of gold be set on?...American?

Impossible. The world does not have enough gold to back what currency is in circulation, much less all the imaginary digital money out there.
