"Who is Brock Yates?" That is funny!!!!!,true story, back at 2003 Carlisle,my friend and I are standing in line for food, and on the PA speaker they announce that Brock Yates is making his way thru the show field to do his celebrity pick.My friend says "who's Brock Yates?"I laugh, then explain.Friend never heard of him. We're back at my friends car in the show field,a beautiful mini tubbed black 65 Valiant with a killer small block stroker, there's Brock walking around it checking it out with his crew, proceeds to approach my friend to ask if were his car as he wants that car to be his pick of the show !!! Standing right next to him,I laughed and said "that's Brock Yates !"
Fast forward to Sunday awards, not only did my friends car win A body modified 1st place,he also was being presented the award from Brock for his celebrity pick. While my friend, girl in bikini, and Brock were posing for pictures,Brock had his right arm on top of the driv quarter panel and after pics were over he sorta dragged his arm off the car.I noticed from where I was he was wearing a watch!!!!!
My other good friend, the one that actually painted the car,  was right next to me saw and noticed that to!!!We said to eachother "did Brock Yates just scratch his car?"
Get back the show field, friend pulls back to his spot with car,we check the quarter panel,YUP !!!!!Scratched !!!!!! Now laughing it off we say "who's Brock Yates?'' "he just scratched your car" We got home,it buffed out.
So,true funny story. If you frequently talk to Brock, ask him if he remembers that year/car.

Also wrote a pretty decent boook, "Sunday Driver," he drove a couple of races for a Trans Am team in the 70's.

Daytona R/T SE

And the Dodge "Trans-Con Medivac" Ambulance ! :Twocents:

Ram07

Okay, he used a dodge, he never built anything special, did he?

No limited prodution runs, stuff like that?

Would not comapre to Yenko, right....they were built and sold!

Ghoste

I would consider him as luminary a car guy as Don Yenko.  Yenko did engine swaps and sold them, I don't know that there was anything particularly special about that either.  Its not like he was the only one or the first or anything? :shruggy:

Ram07

You could buy a Yenko Camaro/Nova...right....but not a Yates Dodge?

So why should he be known to the Mopar world?

Just askin'

A magazine guy who drove a Dodge in a race....don't get it!

But, I'm not the smartest guy either!

mauve66

sorry, it seemed like something special to me, kinda like the Green Brick (mopar) doing the one lap of america thing and toasting high dollar stuff.

i didn't mean yenko was important, just like i don't think mr. norm is important, he just did things the everyday guy was doing, he just sold it out of his dealership, but his name is linked to the hobby

do you know about vanishing point?? not special to me but significant for the hobby, i view the 70's open road runs he did the same way, not special to me but significant for the hobby (not the movies that came later)

also i have to correct an earlier statment, he did actually win the race in a ferrari but i know about him from the challenger he took on the race later on.  Maybe i just remember him from time at motor trend when i was young and reading, i don't read much anymore

Good guy and I enjoyed his columns in Motor Trend.  A true car guy.  Sucks that he was diagnosed with Alzheimer's about 2 years ago.  I believe he set the record for cross country from New York to Cali in an insane time.
