Ever have problems with previous owner.....I did.

So, I got my "turn-key" car from the second owner (nephew of original owner) for 7 grand in 1999. The motor had never been out, cracked original vinyl top, $200 second paint job on the car. In the attic of the garage was 2 truck loads of MOPAR parts that went with it. I sold all that for just over 3 grand on ebay....so I can say "I got the car for less than the original MSRP." I was pretty lucky!

Well, along comes 9/11 and I wind up with a 4 year tour to Italy and stored the car with a friend. As part of my thanks to my buddy I contacted Mopar Collectors Guide and wrote a story how my friend helped me out with pulling the motor, painting and storing the car safely at his place. They said it would be printed so I contacted the previous owner, 3 states away to let him know.....big mistake!

The guy started to tell me how it was nice of him to let the car go cheap back then and now he has been watching the Chargers on Barrett-Jackson and seeing the prices they go for. I told him not to believe in those inflated "complete restoration" prices. He then asked me how I felt about 25 grand for the car, I assumed he wanted to buy it back?

He said I owed him $25,000 more and he was serious. He said I would be hearing from his attorney and to be prepared to give the car back if I did not pay up....that was 2007 and I'm still waiting on that phone call, haha! Sad huh?

Why would you have contacted the previous seller about this, were you in constant contact through the years and devloped some type of friendship?  Once I buy, they do not hear back from me unless there is a problem I wanted some info on.
too many to list!

I would have said, "Umm, yeah I agree the $7k sale was off the mark.  But I think it was way too high.  So either you pay me back $5000 of it now, or I'll call MY lawyer."

PSST, you have to just ignore this Putz. (He obviously thinks he's playing with the big boys). He swings a little too far left if you know what I mean. (It's people like this that caused a second term for you know who).

Now, with more time invested than I really wanted to on BS, To the OP...
While it is unlikely he will ever have a leg to stand on, Buyers remorse is rampant once BJ got involved in the hobby. I have no problem with people asking whatever they wish, doesn't mean they are gonna get it. I refuse to look like a complete putz by replying to every thread like I'm gonna change the owners mind or something here, stating the obvious overpricing. That's just stupid. If asked however, then another story. I rarely see that however. No nevermind anyway, as if there was a case, he'd have already contacted you.

And will be looking from now on. Only thing is, Frivilous law suits are what's killing this country right now. Too many are being allowed to make it to trial that shoulda NEVER made it IMO.

Prisoners shouldn't have the right to "sue" the state they are in due to the food in prison being not to their liking.

My story with the previous owner a little different..I found this car in his parents front yard under a big ol pine tree with a for sale sign on it "needed a restoration but was a complete unmolested car".  I stop and talked to the owner and he didn't want to sell but was getting married and needed the money.  I knew I was going to buy it but how much was I going to have to give.  "$3400"  I said SOLD!!! So off I went with my dream car.  Anyways 7 or so years went by the car went under a resto.  I happen to be in the area with my car for a graduation and I decided to take the car by the previous owners house and show them what became of their sons car.  I went to the door and a lady answered and before I could tell her who I was she looked over my shoulder and said "Oh my god is that Justins old car" I said yes and she screamed at her husband down stairs to get his ass up here right now.  He came out and he was beside himself...he couldn't believe that his sons car was sitting in his driveway(a car that was sitting under his pine tree for years).  She called her son who still lived in the area.  He raced on over and all he kept saying is "I can't believe it...I can't believe it that was my old car"!!!!  We talked for over an hour had a couple of beers...They kept thanking me for bringing it over....they always wondered what became of the car.  I told them it was my pleasure and that I thought it would be nice to let them know that the car survived and was well treated.  That meant the world to them and they did ask me if I would sell it back to them ..I of course said no that my daughter would be very upset with me if she didn't have her orange car..I could tell he felt sick that he sold it in the first place but was happy that it found a good home.  This encounter turned out to be a great memory I will never forget!!!

I guess the latest owner of my old '70 had a problem with the previous owner too. Out of curiosity I located the '70 I used to own and called the owner thinking he would be interested in some history. He really was interested and I told him all about my experiences with it, he told me what all he did while he owned it, I emailed him several photos of it and we had a nice conversation. He ended the conversation promising to send me some photos of the car in its current state so I gave him my email address and the call ended on a positive note.

A few weeks went by with no pics so I emailed him to remind him about it. He said he hadn't forgotten me but was out of town on business and could probably sent them in a few weeks. About 6 weeks went by so I sent another reminder. This time he wasn't so friendly and started getting short with me, yet he maintained that he would send the pics. I waited and waited and got no pics so finally after about six months I thought I would try one last time to get huim to honor his word. This time he went off on me and cussing and whatnot so I just dropped it. He never did send me any pics of it.

Hey tcs, the guy is a nutjob if he thinks you still owe him money, the transaction was final at the time. Doesn't matter why else has happened in the meantime. He's off the planet if he thinks he has a valid claim.

He had tracked it down and called me out of the blue about it. I hadn't planned to sell as I had got it looking sharp and going well but he was telling me stories of childhood holiday trips away in it with the grandparents towing caravan to the beach and stuff, plus he wanted to pay a lot for it. I sold it to him and he emailed back to say he'd took it to his parents place and his mother burst into tears when she saw it, just could'nt believe it had turned up and come back after 26 years. It turns out that the old boy had driving her to her wedding in it, so they had a lot of attachment to it. So, it sure got sold to the right person and that made my day.

OP, that is a hilarious story.    The car is yours, ignore him completely. He has no leg to stand on. Move on with your life.

I'm still in contact with the previous owners of my cars. Heck, we still exchange Christmas cards with the previous owners of my '68 (the original owners).

BobT, your story reminded me of my '70 as well. I tracked down the original owner of my '70 just this past year. Greatest experience, for the both of us. I learned so much about the car in the short time he owned it. It was his first brand-new car, and he & his wife eloped in it. Ironically, it was the wedding chariot for my wife & I also so there was a lot in common. We exchanged pictures, stories, etc. He, his wife, & his entire family were just blown away to see it still existed & was well cared for after all these years. I sent him a color copy of the window sticker framed as a Christmas present, he was ecstatic to get it.
