Jeeps to be made in China - wasn't this a point of argument recently?

So they will be making Jeeps in China after all. Basically they will be made in China for China to avoid tariffs and shipping from the US to China but the jobs could have been created here. I guess it's not a direct outsourcing of jobs in that they won't be laying off 999 Americans and hiring 999 Chinese but in essense they could have added another 999 American jobs for the purpose of building Jeeps for export. :shruggy: It's a strange world we live in.

It was, I wonder if they will get a diesel?

No, I didn't click on the link to see if they said it or not.

Of course I was standing right there in the room when the CEO of a company I once worked for assured everyone in the finest tradition of "read my lips" that the assembly plant they were building in Mexico was "ONLY for the Mexican market and those units would NEVER be shipped to North America.  The purpose was not to build a gun to hold to North American employees heads but only to further expansion south".  That was in the mid 90's, guess where they build them today?

The "XJ" Cherokee was licensed world wide including China in the 80/90's. They were built over there 2 years longer than here as the demand was greater. This is nothing new. The issue was "moving production to".  :2thumbs:

My understanding from other sources......

China.......like Japan......

Just does not allow cars[or Jeeps] made here.......there.

I think it's more then just tarriffs.....or the tariffs are just so high.....same affect.

I too, would much rather see it built here, and exported.

I do not blame Chrysler/Jeep for playing by the rules they have to.

Imagine that, if you propose the notion of sell here build here in this part of the world you are quickly chastised for your naivete in global trade and how the world doens't work that way and if you close your borders your economy will die.  But apparently in the places where nearly all of our manufacturing jobs have been sent to by the corporations based here, if you want to sell there you have to build there.  Which is really weird because it seems like their economy is doing well and ours is in the crapper.
Since I actually am very naive about global trade I would love if someone could explain that to me.  (btw, wasn't it the Asian automakers who lobbied for the removal of the North American auto pact because it was unfair trade?  I keep hearing about how American they are with all of the cars they build here and how they are more American than the American car makers yet they still wanted that auto assembly agreeent between Canada and the US taken down?)
In spite of the sarcastic tone, I would genuinely like to know more about this if we have any actual economists on the board and not just the armchair type.  Actually I think I would like an armchair expert opinion if someone can give it. :shruggy:

 :iagree:

I got that some years ago.....and I do not think it has been changed.

I too, would like to know for sure about this.....it's one of the main reasons I will not even consider buying an Asian brand. Assembled here is fine.....but if their home market is closed to us......not happening.

Only online on the weedends, will definitely look for this thread when I am back on. An inquiring mind wants to know. :icon_smile_big:

YUUUP!

And the nice part is that the profits come back to the US!   :Twocents: :Twocents: :Twocents: ---> hopefully more than that!

C'mon guys, ya'll know that China owns us.  We can't repay the debt and they know it, so they want our assets.  Didn't  the president of GM ship a few thousand jobs over to China a few months ago?  And isn't the president of GM the jobs czar of Obama?  Bah I don't need to be talking bout this!!
