Will someone please explain to me why the media is making such a big deal out of this for?  Wow, they are freaking out because they weren't told absolutely immediately.  Frankly I am sick and tired of hearing about it already.  It was an unfortunate accident but I cannot for the life of me understand why it is being made so huge.

Orange_Crush

Well, it IS serious.

Think about it, had he gone with GW BUSH and Bush accidentally shot him, who would run the country?

It's newsworthy because the information that took too long to be shared happened this time to be in regards to the Vice President accidentally shooting someone. If the communications daisy chain took so long to reveal something like that, who's to say it doesn't take equally as long to reveal something even more serious?

Rebuttal to misspelled accusation aside (liberal is spelled with an "I," btw) it's newsworthy. Let's say you're the next guy to go hunting with Cheney. Knowing that he accidentally shot the last guy would be good news to have. Wouldn't it? If not for the "liberal media" reporting such a thing you might not have known about your hunting partner's past, unless he happened to tell you.

Bottom line: It's not just about hunting.

The media's always on the lookout for any unusual incident with major (and controversial) public officeholders.  It's cheap ratings and it doesn't demand any actual reporting work.

Political?  Only if you wanna read that into it.

The current (crappy) news media is always trying to make everything seem more ominous than they really is.  They do the same thing when they talk about plastic playground toys.

The hunter shot and wounded by Vice President Dick Cheney suffered a minor heart attack after a piece of birdshot moved to his heart

I think it just got a teensie bit more serious.

and to top it off, he did not bother to go get the $7 quail certificate for his hunting licence!!!  doh!!!!

Well if that is the case the freakin liberal media should report every single hunting accident to happen in the US every year so that I am informed about who I'm hunting with. Oh whats that? There are WAAAAY too many hunting accidents for them all to be covered on every single news station? Then quit making such a big freakin deal about it. Accidents happen, plain and simple. Cheney is no better or worse than anyone else in this country. He just happens to be the Vice President cause he knows how to kiss @$$. And who cares if the media didn't know IMMEDIATELY. Big deal. They act like it was covered up for months on end. Had I been in the same situation I would have kept it quiet until I knew that the man was getting proper medical attention and his family was notified. At least the man is alive and expected to live. There are thousands of other accidents where the victim isn't nearly so lucky. The democrats are simply looking for another reason to attack hunting and guns in general...

Funny, but too easy. Ultimately the point I was trying to make is that without asking questions one might never know they should have.

Personally I want to know what nobody seems to: Why the Vice President of the United States was on a hunting trip with the guy, and why they chose to hunt on the ranch they did.

Here locally this weekend, a "Family Friend" (no one I know) was out hunting with the family this past weekend when he reached inside his SUV to retrieve his shotgun.  It went off inside the truck, blowing a whole right through the side, instantly killing a 7 year old boy that was standing beside the truck.    :icon_smile_sad:

This was a very serious accident, but I bet you didn't hear about it in your local news (unless your from the area).

My point is, the reason the media is harping on it is because of who it is.  Accidents can happen to anybody, but it isn't considered news unless your someone famous.  Much like the Princess Diana accident.  It was world news for weeks, but you can bet if she was a nobody, then it would have been a local only story, probably on the third page, with a title something like, "Car wreck claims 3"

IMPEACH!!!!

He forgot the 7$ hunting fee start a congressional inquiry and demand someone get fired.

Damn media thinks they are soooo important that the administration is obligated to tell them everything that happens no matter what and now it being spun into why it took 24hrs to inform the arrogant news media. The administration must be hiding something covering up that Cheney shot him on purpose because that guy was going to blow the whistle on the Iraqi green cake buy that Saddam sold to Bin Laden to blow up the UN  in new york and Cheney was trying to silence him. Some arrogant bastard reporter asked at the news conference if he was going to hand in his resignation over this and McClellan told him that was an absurd question and he was not going to answer it.

I hear Dick is going to ask Hillary Clintoon to go pheasant hunting with him next week and I hear Dick is going to use a Barrett .50 Cal for pheasant hunting and Hillary is going to get a BB gun.

CIA OP? She was a desk jockey pure and simple and everyone in Washington DC knew who she was and what she did. She was not "undercover" and sent her husband on an errand.
Alcohol, Tobacco and Firearms should be a convenience store NOT a government agency!

Guns N Rotors

These questions immediately spring to mind:

• Was Cheney the lone gunman as the Government reps claim, or was there a second shooter up on the grassy knoll?

• What about Whittington's connections to Castro, and the New Orleans Mob??

• How does Halliburton profit from all this?

• Lady Bird Johnson, where does she fit into this picture?

• Whittington's head reportedly snapped back when he was shot, but a peppering of #3 buckshot at 263' should normally cause a lawyer to flinch forward and right, forward and right, ....forward and....right.

• Why will they let you into a ballgame with one of those 120 db air-horns, but just try to get in there with one or two quiet, innoffensive 16 oz. Budweiser tall-boys, and you get tossed out on your ear!!

• Women always want you to be honest, but if you tell them those jeans make their butt look fat, they get all mad.

• "Whittington was taken to Corpus Christi Memorial Hospital" Corpus Christi, literally, the body of Christ. Has anybody checked Dick Cheney for the Mark Of The Beast?

Or maybe I'm just reading too much into this.

I can shed a little light on this.

About a year and a half ago a guy south of here saw a bunch of geese on the edge of his field near one of his stock damns.  He had a rifle with him and fired a couple shots toward the geese to scare them off.  After they didn't fly away he realized that the geese were decoys and a couple guys were hunting there.  He went over to make sure things were ok.  When he got there he found that he shot 1 of the 2 guys right between the eyes.  The bullet richocheted off the water and hit the hunter.  He was charged with given a sentence of community service for a couple reasons.
1) it was an accident
2) although the land was available for walk-in hunting the hunters should have talked to the owner of the land first and tell them they were going to be hunting.
It was a really bad deal and I know the guy's dad.  Some say he got too light of a sentence but I know this guy is going to think about what he did for the rest of his life.

As for the Cheney incident.  When I first heard the story I thought the guy got "peppered."  This happens all the time when bird hunting.  I get peppered every time I go pheasant hunting.  99.9% of the time the BB's are slowed way down and don't penetrate the skin at all.  When you see the hunter down field shoot count 1, 2 then dip your hat.  It'll keep you from being hit in the eye.  Now once in a while you catch a BB that has enough zip left in it to break the skin.  It hurts but so does stubbing your toe and you don't die from that.

The fact that the guy didn't have his head blown off tells me he was at least 25-30 yards away (modified choke 28 gauge).  I don't know how the guy having a BB move to his heart is going to affect Cheney.  It is possible he'll be charged with manslaughter if the guy dies but I doubt it.

BTW Cheney goes pheasant hunting over by Pierre every year, at an undisclosed location of course.  ;)
When I was just a very young lad I looked up and told my dad, a bareback rider's what I wanna be.  I want the whole world to know about me.  In the rodeo arena I'll make my stand.  I wanna be a rodeo man.  I'll come flyin' from the chute with my spurs up high, chaps and boots reachin' for the sky.  Spurin' wild with my head throwed back, you'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.  You'll ask 'Who's that,' well that's Bareback Jack.

My whole issue is how there seems to be a sense of entitlement in the media and how they act like ravenous wolves on every news item.  The media types CANNOT wait for another attack in this country.  They will be like old ladies running next door with the latest gossip.  Also, everyone to the left acts as though the VP attempted to kill this guy and then try and cover it up.  I know that I for one would be mad as hell if it had been someone in my family that had been shot and word got out to the press before the family knew about it. :flame:

There's a reason newspaper readership has been and is on the decline.

Anyway, I took the classes and worked for two small newspapers and dealt with several others and while there is no organized liberal conspiracy in the media the plain and simple fact is that a majority of those who run the media outlets and work there (and I don't mean the owners) are very politically liberal people. Therefore the stuff oozes out of them whether they plan it to or not. For the most part, however, they typically try to remain unbiased in their reporting but I think it's more what they decide to report on that shows their true colors. Meanwhile they are oblivious to this because their opinions are so deeply ingrained it just comes out of them regardless of their best efforts. In short they will preach the gospel of fair and balanced reporting and then subconsciously lean to the left when they gather their information and write the stories, especially those stories that touch on politically hot topics.

The Cheney thing: it's a lot like the incident that took place in the waters beneath the Edgartown Bridge except Harry Whittington didn't die like Mary Jo Kopechne did and there weren't a bunch of lies and attempted cover-ups.

It's newsworthy because the information that took too long to be shared happened this time to be in regards to the Vice President accidentally shooting someone. If the communications daisy chain took so long to reveal something like that, who's to say it doesn't take equally as long to reveal something even more serious?

Typical of this administration, shoot first and put a spin on the story later.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Valid observation.

This is a damned funny thread! :icon_smile_big:

Pertaining to the original topic...yes, the media in general unsually does a piss poor job at keeping an unbiased reporting opinion on most stories these days, IMO. As a result, I rarely watch the news these days, other than to get weather reports & traffic conditions. I just feel that I can't take what's being reported on as even 50% truthful...especially whe it pertains to political & global news.
In all fairness to Strat, I've never read his paper, so I can't hold judgement there. ;D

That would be SWEET!!! :boogie:

What point? That you think this is some grand conspiracy? Give me a break as was stated before, I pheasant hunt in south dakota and Grouse hunt in northern MN. I have been sprayed by beebee's probably a dozen times over my hunting career. The guy that took the pellets is just as at fault as Cheney. Every hunter's responsibility is to know your surroundings and not be where you shouldn't. If he had to go retrieve a bird, he should have made them wait there, and they (the hunting party)  should have heeded this. Separating yourself from a hunting party is a recipe for disaster. I thank God everyday that nothing has happened to my family or me in all the years we have been hunting, But it can happen if you let your guard down. I feel so sorry for how bad Dick must feel right now, knowing you caused someone physical pain has got to be heart wrenching.

You said earlier that People who feel the way I do would have a different opinion if the shoe was on the other foot. Well I got to tell you, that is BS. I have convictions, I don't follow party lines like you appear to be doing. I break down the situation and apply my own experiances. Then I judge it using common sense, Not Democratic or Republican talking points. If you are so paranoid that you want to believe the crap that you are spewing more power to you, but you are not going to convince me with that radical banter.

As far as your Journalism class nonsense, I took Journalism in College, so using your logic that makes my point of view more authoritative? Hell no, I know alot of people that aren't journalism students that could give you a run for your money in a debate. They are just regualar folks who do their own research and stand by their principles.

P.S. If you're such a great journalist, You should be able to better explain your point! ::)

To Derialed, who is off the rail again...yes, I do believe that if the tables were turned (and if there were such a thing as a conservative slanted media) that they would probably report fairly, unlike the status quo.
This is such a nothing burger, worthy of only one days coverage at best on a slow news week. Now if VP Cheney had killed someone, ran & hid, then showed up later with a cheesy neck brace on, then theres a story (which would be swept under the rug by the press depending on the players) Com'on libs, you guys have been Quayle hunting before while loaded for bear...whats wrong with that? Let it go already. Come back when theres a real scandal...Ooops you might have to wait for the next Dem admin for that...Just be patient..it might happen again someday when you guys get your act together.. ;D

. . . and while there is no organized liberal conspiracy, in the media the plain and simple fact is that a majority of those who run the media outlets and work there (and I don't mean the owners) are very politically liberal people.

The network media are a bunch of spoiled brats who think because they are protected by the 1st Amendment they are entitled to everything on their timetable... So things are relevant to know right away, some aren't.....  The 1st Amendment entitles the press to write articles based on facts, true facts they have... It doesn't mention anything that the government has to had over anything they want when they want it... Press, you have to work for somethings,, not just get it handed to you...........

So what is the deal with getting the licence AFTER shooting the gun?? And the Sherriff asking questions the next day?? If it were you or me, (let's hope it never is), we would be either in jail or out on bail.

A few months ago I was sitting at a red light when a cop on a Harley tried to squeeze between me and another car. He scratched up my fender with his clutch lever. After trying to deny it and his boss nailing him to the cross, the police wanted proof of MY insurance. Well,,, I had an expired card in my truck and they wanted to tow my truck. I called my wife and she brought my new card which had just come a few days earlier in the mail.

My point is simple, I did nothing wrong and was getting my balls broke lawfully. Cheney, though it was an accident, SHOT SOMEONE WITH A GUN. Sorry folks, this is news worthy. I think when you put yourself in the public eye and I think we can all agree that the VEEP is up there, your laundry is going to be hung out there for all to see. IMHO Cheney played this hand like an idiot. As if he just doesn't give a crap who thinks what... Regardless of what CNN< FOX< MSNBC or your local crap shooters are saying, the media WOULD HAVE put Cheney on the air in the middle of the Super Bowl if Cheney said to do it.  The fact is, he did not. Cheney has created this on his own.

PS. Now I wonder just how many will try: (I know I don't have a license, but,,, I will send in the check tomorrow)..

Big Lebowski

Why did it take 24 hours to tell the press about it? Ask the swimmer, Sen. Ted (hic-cup) the swimmer Kennedy.
"Let me explain something to you, um i am not Mr. Lebowski, you're Mr. Lebowski. I'm the dude, so that's what you call me. That or his dudeness, or duder, or you know, el duderino if you're not into the whole brevity thing."

Vice- President Cheney did explain his actions today, so the facts are "now" out. Speculation on the real reason he delayed in getting the story out will be the domain of the bloggers and the main-stream media (same thing in my mind). I kind of laughed at the reaction of the White Press Corp at not getting the first shot at the story. Now, If you don't like Vice- President Cheney, so be it. But I think he is one of most honest and sincere men this country has had in office for a very long time. And that is my opinion, so please take it for what its worth. This "investigation" is what I term  :horse:"""""".

I want to clarify my position.

I think this is news worthy, as he was a public figure and they have to pay dearly for any and all mistakes, just by being in the public eye. But I think that implying that it is some grand conspiracy is rediculous. I pray that the victim is alright and he forgives Cheney as just about anybody that has to deal with a similar situation would have to do. Cheney and the victim made some serious bad judgement calls, cause they are HUMAN. Humans make mistakes, even Vice presidents.

Weeeeell.... this one certainly has a lock in it's future.

I've got people on other forums saying that Cheney should be charged with assault with a deadly weapon, and that he should have been thrown in jail right when the police got there.

Now, correct me if I'm wrong, but, for this to be considered assault, doesn't there have to be intent, or malice?  And, is ANY hunter involved in an accidental shooting immediatly hauled off to jail? :rotz:

The level of misinformed people trying to give everyone their 2 cents is astounding.

I don't see what's so bad about shooting a lawyer anyway. :shruggy: Cheney was probably just trying to reduce the number of people on Social Security.

Brock Samson

SO how long does it take for your blood alcohol level to diminish anyway?..

Dans 68

Strat,

You ask, and I comply! The link http://www.ou.edu/oupd/bac.htm has a blood alcohol level calculator, base upon number of drinks, type of drinks, body weight and drinking duration. If the Vice-President had the one beer he said, and he had it over a one hour period (reasonably for lunch) and at the greatest weight allowed in the formula (240 lbs), then his blood alcohol level was .01%.

Not impaired at all...so I guess he really wanted to shoot the lawyer!  :icon_smile_big:
