Lets say your eldest daughter just passed her road test & got her license.....do you report it to your auto ins company or just "let them find out sooner or later"

or....does the DMV automatically report it to the ins company?

What say you?

I doubt that they will report it to the company, after all how would they now which one?

I always wondered how that worked, since you typically insure CARS not drivers. And all they ever do is charge you more because someone living at the house is Licensed and young. A bud on the fire dept is an insurance agent. Ill ask him and get back to you.

Well, I guess it would depend if she will be driving or not.  If she has her license and will not be driving then I would say not report it to insurance.  IF she will be, I would add her just in case she is driving and gets involved in an accident, your insurance company could deny your claim causing your to pay for everything in full!

Chris, I just looked at the AAA website & found this......

http://teendriving.aaa.com/NY/getting-ready/insurance

It's a little vague, but it sounds like you'll only have to add her if you let her drive one of your cars. However, I've ALWAYS been asked by my insurance company for the names of all licensed drivers in the household.

Can you make her live in the garage to avoid lying?

Insurance

Here's some good news about insurance. Your teen won't need it until licensed and driving without you or an instructor in the car. Once your teen gets a learner's permit, you'll want to talk to your insurance agent about costs and other issues involved in adding your teen to your policy. Most families do this by adding the teen to their existing auto insurance policy. You could also use this as a time to comparison shop to find the best insurance option for the whole family and your vehicles.

I curious about this too. Our 16 yr old son is going to get his permit in the next week or two. He was given a jeep 4x4 pickup from his uncle, but it still needs lots of work to be road worthy. Whats got me nervous is: male + 16 + 4x4 + truck = $$$$$$$$$$$$$$$?????????????????????????

***Oh i forgot to add that he's homeschooled, and just started taking drivers ed this week through school!

I don't know if they still have them or not, but years ago insurance companies would write a non-owners policy that was really affordable.

My daughter just got hers, had to call my insurance company and add her as an occasional driver.

if you don't list the new driver on your insurance they will not be covered by the insurance co. Or the flip side will not cover the claim of the person they hit.

you do not need to call the DMV.

if you buy them (new driver)their own car and register it becomes there primary vehicle. then they become an occasional driver on your car's. You must list them on your car if they live in the same household as you do.

Works out well when you buy them a 20 year old car and it costs nothing for them to drive your brand new GT40.  i have seen this same scenario.

:iagree:
When my son got his license, we called out agent.  It would have been between $1200-$1400 to add him on to our policy.  He bought an 87 W150 and put it in his name, and it cost him about $900.  The nice thing is it had dropped every year (he's 21 now) so it's around $450 now.  That's only liability coverage, but he hasn't had any accidents or tickets so our agent said if he buys something better he wouldn't get beat too bad on a vehicle with payments (and full coverage).  And to tell the truth, if he's home he usually drives our vehicle instead of the 10 MPG Ram!

$720 yr....she had no drivers ed.

On a side note, my Son (21), real dumbass most of the time bought a 2012 Ram Sport 4x4....Got himself quite a few big tickets in that thing...His insurance jumped to $13,500 a year....yup...$13,500!! Good thing he's making good money!! Just over $1120 a month it costs him for insurance...

when my daughter got her license we called the insurance company. When my son got his we did not but they knew. After 6 months they sent me a letter asking if he had a license.

The agent always took the time to figure out which vehicle in my fleet would cost me the least and assigned the kid to each. They have a primary driver listed on each vehicle but we can drive any.

They did me ok the cost on that one vehicle didn't go up too bad. It was more for my son then when my daughter got her license.

Well I guess I should....ahem my friend should...bite the bullet and tell the insurance company :pity:

The premium depends on a few things. Girls use to be cheaper to insure than boys, (back when both my boys got their licenses 5 to 10 years ago). Honor roll students got a discount. Cost me $350-400. a year for each kid through USAA. some of my friends with other companies were paying over $1,000/kid per year.

Hi Chris
I have two daughters that drive now and I added them on my policy. God forbid they have an accident I don't want to take that chance. The good I got from it is because they are in collage and both on the deans list I got a nice discount now. Hope this helps.

Just 6T9 CHGR

Thanks Bill & great to hear the girls are doing so well

Chris, When " your friend " calls the insurance company ask about addtional discounts. Ours gives a discount for good grades. We just have to mail our agent a copy of grades every so often. Mail it to your agent , not the main office. The agent said it would prolly get lost.  :2thumbs:  And ours offered a DVD and booklet that  Shelby logged in hrs. When she was done and turned it back in. It gave us an addtiional discount. Hope this all helps.   Oh, and if she had Driver's Ed is an other discount.

Oh...asking this for a friend ;)

If they drive your cars, you need to report them (add them) to your policy, otherwise they will not be covered.
If you have your collector cars on a separate policy, you can exclude them specifically from the policy.

You have to have at least 5 years' of licensed driving experience to be on collectors policy... at least thru American Collectors.

Anyway... pony up the $$$.    And don't go buying them new cars til they get the first crash out of the way.   I don't feel like telling the story but a year ago October really sucked around my house.

That being said...   how many of us guys had to get a job and help pay for our first insurance while our sisters got a free ride?  :P

Hey, I worked and paid my own car insurance since I was 16. :nana:  And I paid Shelby's 1st month of car insurance. She pays her own. And she does hate the fact that she has to be 25 to drive the Challenger on my insurance.

mauve66

most insurance have clauses that limit an extra drivers to age 25 (unless you yourself are under 25)  my little brothers (20-22) always wanted to take my car out when i would visit but the policy wouldn't cover them even though they had a license.  My parents could drive all day long though, without being listed on the insurance
