This is in the same league as 318 vs. 440 cars...ALL you see today at car shows are 440's 318's are rare! Same goes with Bench seats...EVERY car has buckets now when that clearly wasn't the case when these rolled off the line. Add to that cars today, with exception of pick-ups ALL have bucket seats. Its really a novelty to have a bench seat.

When I was restoring my '72 1st thought was to get buckets and console and rip out the bench...but then I thought about I hardly EVER see a muscle car with a bench seat so left the Bench in there and I'm happy I did!

Wife's happy too!  :D

I loved the bench seat in my 69 road runner

When everybody was younger, had more zest for life, etc. the Buckets were the in thing...However, as we get older, bigger, more crippled, etc, Bench seat begins to look more appealing.

Bench seats are fun when Armor-All'd. They are also better for a bit of "action"  :D  Plus they look cool.

Buckets for any performance car.
Bench for trucks and cruisers.

Old Moparz

My first '69 Charger SE had buckets with the buddy seat & arm rest. That set up is my favorite because I always use the arm rest. My current '68 Charger had the brackets on the floor when I got it, so I'll leave it & put the buckets & console in. I literally tossed the bench seat from my Satellite convertible in the dumpster to put buckets with the buddy seat & arm rest in. I never liked bench seats but would never toss one in the trash again, they're worth too much.  ::)

Here's another reason to hate a bench seat. If the driver is shorter, like my wife who is about 5'-2" tall, they need the seat close to the steering wheel & pedals. That means if you're taller your knees are pressed against the dash.

I yanked the bench seat out of her old Duster & put buckets in.   :2thumbs:

Sold my Charger unfortunately....never got it finished.

My Charger and my wife's Charger both came with bench seats from the factory. I plan on adding bucket seats for the ability to put the seat back just a tad farther than stock to accommodate my 6' 10" frame. Not really an option with the factory bench seat.

I will keep the bench seat since that is what it had and what I have known in it.  I am curious to sit in/drive one with buckets.  The bench situates me pretty high in the car.  I wonder whether buckets would be a little lower.

Who in their right mind would say

"The science should not stand in the way of this."?

Science is just observation and hypothesis.  Policy stands in the way.........

Or maybe it protects us.

I suppose it depends on the specific case.....

One that was two years newer with a four speed. :D

I thought about this topic in great length. Decided to leave the bench seat in and glad I did. Pulled it out and reconditioned it, and decided to keep it in. I get more than a few positive comments about keeping the bench. The interior stayed original, mostly. I still would like to find the optional bench for 72 that had a center arm rest.

Not trying to hijack the thread but Paul c do you know if the same layout (diff color) was used for 71's? I ask is I have the same interior as yours but red and grey.
I came here to kick ass and chew bubble gum, but I'm all out of bubble gum.

Sublime/Sixpack

I don't mind a bench seat if it's contoured right. When I recovered the bench seat in my Super Bee I did a little extra work on the bottom cushion as well as the backrest so it fits me just right. It's actually more comfortable then the bucket seats in my Charger. Plus I can move around a little more if I want to, less confining. :yesnod:

Never seen a shot of your interior Paul, very nice !!!!!! :cheers:From all the pics of your car I've seen, always thought it was a black interior, very nice car to !!!!! I am one of the handfull that love green cars/interiors/vinyl tops !!!  :drool5:

I almost ended up with a triple green 69 R/T SE with white stripe restored for sale at the Mopar nats in 97.

69 OUR/TEA

My B5 R/T I sold was a buckets/console,my 3x9 R/T SE is buckets with buddy seat, gotta say,I'm liking the buddy seat better, somewhere to lean your arm on when driving. But the downside to it,the homely shifter on the column  :'(.Can't have everything!!!

69 OUR/TEA

Although,and I don't know why,as I love 69 A12 Superbees, my combo would be EL5,no vinyl top,black bench,auto on the column!!!!! :drool5: :drool5: :drool5:

Now that would be my pick of a clone car to make if I were building one !!!

oldcarnut

I'm keeping the bench in my Bird clone.  Room for 6 people instead of leaving odd man/lady out   Everything else I have new and old are buckets. Legendary changed the color scheme for me and the door panels to match and I redid hummer headrests for it.  I don't think the wife will be driving it much to worry about leg room but occasionally she might like to ride like in old days right beside me  ;)  I'm thinkin it'll be a nice change once in awhile

Dino

I wouldn't want anything but buckets in the Charger, but if I'd get something like a 50's cruiser I'd love to have a bench.
