Is there a particular way to connect the hooks on the ring that goes around the reaction support shaft?  I can't get it connected!

Put your thumbs on the ring sides on either side of the ring gap with the gap facing up, then push in on the sides while also pushing the ring hard into the bottom of the groove, this will allow one of the ends to be pushed up over the other and then drop down into the hooked position.

Be sure you have the correct rings for the support being used, '71 and later rings (usually a bright finish) in a '70 and earlier support are much harder to hook; earlier rings usually have a dark grey/black finish.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

That's what I am doing, it seems so simple. But you shed your expertise on the problem. I'm swapping input shafts to replace the current 19 spline, my donor tranny ended up being 71 or later. So, I'm changing out the drum assemblies also. One of the hooks was broken on the donor reaction shaft, so I tried using the old on from the 19 spline. That's my issue right there. Thanks John. I'll see if the local trans shop has the correct one.
