My wife just showed me the popular mechanics story on a vintage flying saucer in an ohio air force museum.  Has anyone seen this?  Know more that they can tell me?  It is probably old news.

I see it also at http://news.discovery.com/autos/military-vehicles/flying-saucer-121009.htm and some other sites and http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Avrocar_flying.jpg.

It was a project that came at the time of extensive military experimentation and dreaming.  After WW2 and Korea, the military was spending a chunk of change on these types of projects.  History channel would have more on these types of projects.  Pretty cool stuff though.  I enjoy watching shows that involve this type of stuff.

Just think, the Robinsons are still out there lost in space.

Hard to believe the engineers had to put that thing in a wind tunnel just to figure out it was "unstable."

Yeah pretty surprising that the company that built one of the best Military jets of it's time also tried to build a flying saucer :p

Oh well not like the US could do it :D

The Jet that your government forced Canada to abandon before it was truly operational, destroy the plans, destroy the working planes, then offer jobs to those plane designers :p

if Canada was so great, they would have stayed there.

To bad they didn't stay, Canada would be a pretty nice place. We just didn't have the resources they required.

James Floyd went on to help design the aircraft that became the Concorde.

Jim Chamberlin went to Nasa and designed Gemini spacecraft and was described as "probably one of the most brilliant men ever to work for NASA."

Owen Maynard also went to Nasa and started the design for the Apollo spacecraft. He was also the most responsible for the desgin of the Lunar Module.

Rod Rose also went to Nasa and worked on planning the Apollo missions.

Of 200 Engineers who were laid off by Avro, 31 went to Nasa. Without them the US would have never made it to the moon  :nana:

Well, maybe we can change the subject a little with another question.

Does anyone know whether they rotated as they flew?

Avro Arrow, 1958.

Sadly the plane didn't get the chance to fly with it's designed engines. The Mk1 flew with the Pratt & Whitney J75 engines from the US and only reached Mach 1.9. The Mk2 was to use the Orenda Iroquois and would have reached over Mach 2. Avro also had plans for a Mach 3 version but it was never built due to cancellation.

i always think of MIGs when i see a shape like that, way ahead of the game for 58, those germans were pretty close to having their own jets/bombers when WW2 came to an end
i know they actually had them but with limited use and the bomber they were building would of reached the US

Yep.  We beat the Russians to the moon because we got more Nazi's than they did.
