So I get a call from a company. They want to hire me for Armed Bodyguard and Armed Transport of Valuables (not in Canada but the company is based in Canada). I even have to wear a suit.

I'll look something like this:


Anyways they said I have one month to get my Level 3 First Aid or they will over look my employment.

So now I'm freaking out trying to find a level 3 first aid course in my area! I have my level 1 but for them that isn't enough.

All other "combat" training they said will be done in house by their instructor.

I've found a couple although they would require living in a hotel for two weeks. Not exactly cheap. I'll keep looking though!

I am "employed" by a similar company but I'm laid off right now. My company was supposed to have called me back on the 1st but still no word on work. Level 3 first aid would open a lot of doors for me in any field of work so there is no downside really.

The training opens more doors so, even if this place doesn't hire you, you're more likely to find another. Also, if you were working you wouldn't easily be able to take two weeks off to get the training. If you have the money (and still have a reserve when you get back) then I wouldn't think twice about it.

Well money is tight, but my father has offered to lend me the money for the course. I am technically still employed by one company, just no contracts to work. So if I do this course fast enough and don't get the Bodyguard position then I could still end up on a contract with the company I am with now.

I'm looking at $1700 for the course and living in a hotel for 11 days. Then eating expenses.

One job that I could get with my Level 3 first aid is a medic at the oil rigs. They get paid $40 an hour, 12 hours a day, to sit in a vehicle and watching movies on a laptop and read books. Until someone gets hurt of course.

i agree i would do whatever you have to to. definatly take that class. especially if it will get you more opportunity in the future.  ramen noodles and chef boyardee man, not the best but it fills the hole.

So I've made my doctor's appoint for my "physical" for Tuesday. Have to take one because I was Epileptic about 7 years back. Haven't had a seizure though in 6 years and haven't been on any meds for that length of time either.

Now I just have to get the money together and fire off a check to the Hotel and to the Instructor.

Yeah the company I work for now... our contract ended. We were told there would be a new contract by start of January. Still nothing. The job I "have" now pays more (when we have a contract :p) than this upcoming Bodyguard job. I'm tired of being on my ass, I miss the "excitement" of being in the sh*t!

I think that's a good decision Drache. You have to plan for the future. The "s**t" will get you killed unless you're at the top of your game. I hope you're not a player because we are all pulling for you and take you at your word. You sound like a young man but there will come a time when field work will be beyond your physical reach. At that point your choices will be limited to consulting, starting your own company or a career change. Either way the more experience you have....read skill sets/real world knowledge....the better a consultant or business person you'll be. Quality documented, certified education at any level is not cheap. Within the scope of your daily obligations get as much "book" learning as you can now......it will payoff, in conjunction with your practical street skill sets, when you have to walk the walk.

Just signed up for my course this morning. They are mailing my books down to me today or tomorrow because there is a lot of pre-reading and "pre-homework" she says I need to do. I filled out my "OCCUPATIONAL FIRST AID STATEMENT OF FITNESS" which is a bunch of questions on my medical fitness and since I had a history of seizures when I was younger I have to get a "Occupational First Aid Medical Certificate of Fitness" signed by my doctor stating I won't have a seizure during class. This is being done tomorrow!

My class runs from February 4th to the 15th and the test will be either the 16 or the 17th (they don't know yet). I'll have to live in the Economy Inn which is 300 feet away from the Lifesavers building for two weeks.

What I'm "worried" about is taking the course then getting a call from my current boss asking me to come back to boring work for slightly more money but sitting in a oil camp in the middle of nowhere 3 weeks in and 1 week out or taking the Bodyguard position with this new company for slightly less money but better hours and a chance to travel....

Don't worry about it, and make that decision when (if ) it comes.  I have a neighbor that lost his job because they heard he was looking at a career change.  He aquired a semi and was getting his license to drive it.  He thought he had a gig lined up with a buddy of his.  2 years later, he's still sitting at home trying to get a deal going.  I pointed out a few jobs to him, and he had the same worries.  He's afraid that if he starts a new job, his truck driving deal will come through and he'd have to quit his new job.  He's borrowing money from family.

Keep your focus on taking the course.  If that situation that has you worried, comes up, make your decision then, not now.  Get excited for the fact that your going to be working again

Yeah, worry about having 2 jobs when you actually have 2 jobs. Don't burn any bridges either way. Employers know you have to eat and if they aren't paying you then you have to find other opportunities.

I'm good friend with my current supervisor. He actually has asked me a few times if I've found another job yet. He too is currently laid off awaiting for our new contract to start.
