Headed in the AM to look at/buy my dream car...

I am headed to look at/buy my dream car in the morning. It is a 4 hour trip that I am excited to make. It is a 1968 Dodge Charger 440 R/T numbers matching 4 speed with console. The car has had one repaint in the 80's. The only other thing on the car that is not original is the carb and electronic ignition. The gent that has it now bought it from his friend about 10 years ago. The friend bought the car new. I am just having a hard time getting my hands on a value for an unrestored car like this. If it has completely restored I know it would be worth big $$$. Any thoughts or advice would be very much apperciated. I am going to try to post pictures. If they do not pop up it is because I can't figure out how to get them on here. I have the toughest time posting pictures.

Thanks.... my only fear is paying to much for it since I am so wound up about her. That is what I need you guys to help me with. I know the guy is asking more than it is worth but how often do you run across these? I would love for you guys to throw some prices at me of what you think it is worth if it is as solid as he says it is.

Depending on how solid the entire car is it could be worth more unrestored as a survivor.  (Not that I have a clue what value it would be.)

I'd think if the body is solid with no rust repair required the value is a little more than that, IMHO.  I'd personally pay up to the high 20's.  It is a numbers matching R/T 4 speed in a desirable color combination.

I think that the bottom dollar on that car is going to be $35,000..... Like I said earlier it may be more than it is worth but, there is just not many of those 68 440 4 speeds that are numbers matching out there. Would I be off my rocker to pay this guy $35,000?

Hi Keven and Welcome. If its the one you want and you can afford it AND the body, running gear and interior is in very good condition then no, I dont think you are off your rocker. In my humble opinion, spend more now to get the best car you can for the dough you have rather than spending more later on trying to put a lesser value car into good driver condition. Granted, 35k is top dollar for an unrestored one but its hard finding a good one in the first place. I'd pay 35 if the chips were down and the car stacked up, but Im a foreigner and R/T's are super hard to get hold of.                          You could wait for a long time trying to find another, meanwhile life rolls on. This forum has a huge amount of valuable advice on resto type stuff. Good luck

I was thinking 27 to 31, but if it's the car you've always dreamed of, you probably won't go too wrong paying 35. If you paid that for a new car, it'd be worth about 17 in a year and a half. Even if you do find you overpaid for the '68, it'll probably gain in value over the next couple of years however much you overpay now.

You guys have been a huge help. I am driving up to check it out either way. I will know more once I arrive. I have looked at a few others in the past and walked away knowing it was not the right car or not what they stated. How do I verify that it is the numbers matching motor on a 68?

for that kind of money it better have the fender tag & build sheet,numbers on a 68 block are on the top rear of block where the bell housing is against the block.

As cdr and greenpigs said...take a small torch so you can look down the gap of the hood down to the oil sender guages, this is where the i.d. numbers are. Dont get too upset if the #'s dont match, its a bonus if they do, possibly they do if its a low owner car but they all got beat on back in the day. Mine is, which is cool, but not the be all about it, just getting an unmolested car puts you ahead of the game

Well   , i am 1.5 hours into my journey to go look at this Charger. I do not understand why i am so nervous aboug it? I guess it might be the thought of putting this much into a 45 year old car. I will let you guys know how it turns out. I know he will not take any less right now due to the amount of calls he is getting but, i can offer right?

If the car is solid with no rot, matching numbers, build sheet, fender tag, etc, I'd say that 35 is a little on the high side, but as they say; go find another.

I just bought a 68 RT myself.  I paid $25k  Car was in a little better shape interior wise and paint is really nice.  Motor was re-ringed and bearing w hemi cam about 30k ago.  Headers and 1980 Vintage NOS unit, intake and carb, SS springs.  I do have all the parts taken off though.  Mine is gold w white interior.  Fendertag and buildsheet.   Bought from original owner.  There is absolutely no rust in this car.  Downside is column shifted auto with buddy seat.  I feel that I was mid value due to engine compartment and repaint and column shift.  I bought from a friend who's wife's dad bought new and put in friends wife name when new, so original owner.  I would have paid more for 4 speed carprobably up to $30k.  But to me that would be tops for an unrestored car.

It depends on what you want in the end,cruise night/driver or do you eventually want a show car?
As I have replied in other threads,pay top dollar for a show car now,having your azz hit the seat and enjoy life and never lift a finger,or resto project for thousands less and do it yourself to that level.
A cruise night/driver quality will eventually turn into ,restore this,restore that and now after spending $35k,you will be spending,who knows,$10,15,20 and up.
To me,by those pics,looks pretty clean and shiny,but it is driver quality.Needs an interior no doubt.Call me being blunt,4spd,#'s matching is a plus,but from what I see,I would'nt pay more than $22-25.Tell the guy to go to his doctor and get a dose of reality,stop watching Barret-Jackoson,and check his emails on the car market that has been coming down.
We have'nht seen eng pics,or suspension either BTW.
