70/I6 charger

I just made a deal with my father in law for his charger.

Its an all original 1970 charger with the 225 I/6 and factory air. I don't know the ins and outs as I have only seen it out from under cover once just this last year. It has been sitting under a tarp for the last 10 years. It's white with a black vinyl roof. It is missing the front seats. He pulled them out to get them redone and they were left at the upholstery shop many moons. I will follow with pics when I get to go pick it up.

THE 6 WILL STAY!

I have been told, and I just confirmed on another site. That the 6cyl with air is more rare than the HEMI. The 6 cyl will stay! I know it has surface rust, but the body is straight. It was a daily driver until it was parked& tarped. It will be a couple of weeks before I can get up to it to get all the info you guys crave!

The six even without the air is rarer than the Hemi.  Welcome and looking forward to the pics.

I am glad your keeping this one stock. Keeping the current motor will save a fair amount on your resto as many swap out for a 440.

If you feel the need for speed I would look for a Dart or something to hack up.

Thank you for the warm welcome, I will be registering it @ http://1970chargerregistry.com when I get all the info, and am prof positive that it is a for real 6cyl a/c car. I guess I jumped the gun on posting so soon. But I did see a 6cyl and a/c pump when he popped the hood for me, the one time we went out and looked at it. I have been trying to get it off his hands for the last 8 years. I have always been a Dukes of Hazard fan, and getting a charger has always been a dream.`(no I wont butcher mine)I'm one for keeping things stock.

When I was a teenager I found a 68 mustang fastback. It had a 200ci I6 mated with a 4 spd MT, factory air and pony bench seat. I got it sitting in the weeds for $600 and built it with my Dad. It was 1 of 1 from the factory.I was paid a considerable stupid (even today's standard) lump sum for it when Gone in sixty seconds came out. It was sold  with the condition it will remain as is.  The guy knew what he was buying.

Any odd ball is what I wind up with. LOL Yes, the 6 is very cool especially since gas is almost $4.00 a gallon. Depending on rust issues, I plan on just pulling it out from under the tarp and bringing it to drivable condition.  I don't have the funds lying around to do a frame off. I do know that it will need the full gambit. Tires, breaks, Batt full tune up. I know I will have to work on getting the motor turned over. Ill pull the plugs and soak the pistons with WD. I will just have to go from there!

b5blue

Hey that's how I started. Mine was an ex drag race only car for 8 years. Take it one step at a time, you can do it! (My whole dash and most of the wiring was in the trunk!  )

Don't think odd ball......

Think UNIQUE!!

Positive mindset is critical when working on old rigs. Especially after you skin your knuckles, drop the hammer you were holding on you toe, and when the pain subsides you realize your knuckles are leaking.....a lot.

I really love the odd ba.....ahhh...I mean unique ones. Seems a good plan, free things up, get it drivable.

I've had a couple of /6s, about the same MPGs as a 318.....meaning decent.

I'm envious.

Would LOVE the three on the tree one too. Can you imagine the younger crowd.....not only having never seen one.....not understanding how it works.

Priceless. :icon_smile_big:

70/I6 charger

UMM.. yeah ,unique that's it!! LOL  :smilielol:

I have always been able to find the odd ball, and obscure. I posted about my mustang. It was  4spd mated to a 200 I/6!! I bought it from the original owner. He showed a lot of fondness telling me about it, when he ordered it from the dealership.

The three on the tree is definitely cool, I had a Maverick with one. There was a learning curve to it. No one I knew could drive it. LOL Every one who tried, couldn't grasp the concept that it's the same as on the floor.

I'm not sure what is in the charger as for the trans. When  got to look at it , it was just for 2 or 3 min and I was looking at the skin more than any thing. Main things are to get some seats for it, and get it driving. This will be my 5th car revive so I know what I am in for. My last project was an old Chevy delivery van that sat for 7 years. A couple of weekends later it was running and looking good.   I might be able to get up there next weekend. many pics will follow.

Right on!  Cool that you mentioned registering @ the Registry.  I think it's rude to verbally pimp another Charger forum on another Charger board anyways usually hoping my signature catches attention.

I wonder how much luggage you could put in the engine with only half or less of it used?  Between the front bumper & rad. support as well we're talking a lot of empty space.

I know I've said this before but I'd wheel past a row-ful of Hemi & big block cars' to check out a slant 6 Charger.  Good for you in planning to keep the 6.

I wonder, my '71 e body was a 318 car with AC & had a 26" radiator support.  If your car is truly a /6 w/ A/C from the factory & not an add-on, will it have a 26" rs?

No vin yet. I'm in southern Ca Bksfld, and he is up north by Redding. My FIL works full time plus so I have to wait. The last time I spoke to him, he asked if I was still interested in the car. We worked a deal on the phone. Now it's a waiting game for me to get synced with my Dad to borrow his truck "his work vehicle" to go pick it up. It's all about scheduling. It has waited for this long a few more weeks wonkt rust it out to much...

PICS and VIN comming soon!!!

Chad L. Magee

Nice to meet another member with a complete 1970 charger /6.  Is yours a plain model (no pads on the upper doors) or a 500 model by chance?  You can tell by the first two letters of the VIN (XH plain, XP 500).  Check out the information on the 1970 charger registry as it has the breakdown on production numbers for the /6 cars, but only gives the total produced with each option (as the way it was reported back then).  The plain models had 181 made and the 500 had 29 made (including the one of one 500 SE), so total production was low on either type.  You need to look for the buildsheet(s) if there is one in the car somewhere....

There maybe about ten to twenty 1970 /6 Chargers left in any shape, including those that have been converted into non-/6 models.  Most I have seen have lost their engines long ago....

If yours happens to be an XH model, it could have had the bench seat like mine does.  Those are fairly hard to track down, but you can find them in regular 318 optioned XH Chargers if the owner did not switch them out for buckets yet....

You can laugh about the sound of that old GP all you want, but that old two-banger would drag a 70 (or any year) Charger backwards around a football field regardless of what engine you stuffed down in it, and not even spin a tire.   :smilielol:

F8-4life

Waiting for pics, while I wait here are my thoughts on the subject. Besides being a cool/rare/odball. I think 6-chargers weirdly seem cooler because while the body (car itself) is the same...the mill is tamer/lamer. This in turn makes the car is soo much cooler relitive to whats under the hood.  Like if you were looking at the motor and then got out from under the hood, youd almost be suprized that it was a charger in the first place. Pure minimilistic uniqueness... too many people think it has to be a 440 to be a "proper" charger.

Rare factory oddballs are cool as long as you can live them after the restoration has been paid for. I never heard of anyone properly restoring a Satellite 9-Passenger Wagon Slant Six with a 3-speed manual column shift transmission because it was 1 of ## built... Just sayin'! :Twocents:

The rest of the grill and trim is in the trunk. Seats were taken to a shop to get redone and forgotten. It was going to be a restore but was forgotten about. The car has been sitting since 1998, at least that's when it was last registered. I have been going through and cleaning it up /  out all day. My FIL has had it for over 10 years. Since I meet his daughter :)

The plan for the car, is going to kill you guys. I plan on just making it a beater driver painted flat black and piece it together over a couple of years. Once I win the Lotto, Itll be a frame off job.

buckeyecharger

Nothing wrong with making it road worthy till you got the funds to restore. I wouldnt worry about the flat black paint though, just start saving and putting it back together. It'll cost enough $$$ just getting it back on the road. Hey, you started out ahead of the game...nothing beats free!!!

On the contrary, that sounds great!  Restorations cost a lot of money and time.  If someone can't handle the hit at once it goes under a tarp, as you can attest.  Rather see it being enjoyed and used.

oops! I thought I read it was given to him. my bad, must've been reading that in some other thread. Exactly my point, drive it now and start saving.
