Black on Red/Orange Daytona

Sorry no picture as it is too big to scan.

I have this picture of a red or orange Daytona with a black stripe framed and hanging on the wall in my office.  The different thing about the car is that it has those prototype aluminum wheels that Dodge had on the Challenger II concept car.  At least that was the prototype model as I remember it.  Do a google search for Challenger Concept and all you get is stuff abut the new one.

At anyrate does anyone know how this car came to have these wheels on it as I had heard that Chrysler couldn't get the metallurgy right on these wheels and they kept cracking.

There were some wheels made by Kelsey Hayes back then that were recalled.  Maybe the ones you are talking about?   

Saw a set of 5 on e-bay a while back - $5,000.00 USD.

There is some company repoping those now but can`t remember which one it is.Would it be Vintage Wheels?

Recall wheels are from Oregon by Speciality Wheels

Is it a poster  that was made in the 1980's that your refering to? Does it list a Dave Jones as the owner of the car? Is it sitting in front of some tree's, with leaves all around? Is it a HEMI Daytona?

If so, then they are the Kelsey hayes recall wheels. He only put them on there because he wanted to, they didn't actually come on that car. They were recalled before the Daytona was ever built.

I have that 69 hemi daytona poster.By power wheels they were sold in auto parts stores.Ready to frame.Anatol Vasilev used to do these kinds of photos and sell in the wingcar club newsletters back in the day

That's the picture.  I think I bought it at the same time i got the 69 Red 500 with Centerline wheels and the Panther Pink hemicuda.

Ah and the 69 Red 500 is sitting in front of an old steel shack?

I have quite a few copies of those posters laying around here. I had them up on my walls at a kid growing up with the real cars out in the yard and garage.

And just to clarify, the wheels weren't recalled because Chrysler couldn't get the metallurgy right.  Chrysler was only sourcing them from an outside vendor so they really didn't have anything to do with it other than being on the hook for it publicly.  They were made by Kelsey Hayes as already mentioned and the issue was cracks as you mentioned.  They were an aluminum wheel and when Chrysler recalled them, they ddin't know why they were cracking at first but given the nature of the component and the potential for a serious accident, they didn't take any chances and just arbitrarily recalled them as soon as the problem came to light.  Later on, it was determined that the issue was due to a need to periodically re-tighten the lug nuts and given the general public's unwillingness to perform periodic maintenance on their car, it was likely a good thing that Chrysler kept them off the market even after the cause was determined.
