Ever have an owner refuse to sell you a car that was otherwise for sale?

For whatever reason I remembered two this morning.  There was a 67 Satellite that my buddy and I wanted to use for a dirt track car so that was a good call on the onwers part and ther was also a 69 Swinger 340 that the owner wouldn't sell me because I was "too young".  He claimed the speedo went up as fast as the tach and he wouldn't be responsible for my death.  Which of course only made me want it more but I never did buy it.

I had a Used Car Dealer back around 1975 refuse to sell me a '70 Challenger R/T . This was a dealer just outside the loop (610 loop) around Houston on Airline Dr.  in what was then, and more now, an Hispanic end of town. He wanted $1700 for it and it was nice and worth every bit of that. He told me and my friend who was with me that if he sold me the car, it would be gone as I was going to give him cash for it and he did not want that to happen. He had sold and repoed the car 3 times already and knew he could sell and repo it a few more! WTF !

I had wrecked my first car, a 71 Charger 318 car when I was 16.  I was looking for another one and saw an ad for a 70 Challenger 340 car about a half hour away.  Mother Dear wanted to go too, the car was gorgeous- 340 auto, console, headers and the perfect touch- Velour seats! (this was the 70's, original interiors weren't hip?) All for $1200!  We took it for a ride, the chick that was selling started telling all her stories about how many times it had gotten away from her and spun, how many tickets she had gotten, how long the black marks were when you lit it up, etc.  After the test drive we got back in the old '74 Fury and Mom says "Looks like you'll be driving this for a while yet"!  I knew better than to argue.

We smartened up after that.  My buddy eventually scored a 67 Barracuda for dirt tracking but he assured the seller of that one he was planning to restore it.  When I sold cars we had an expression, "buyers are liars".

After I bought my old Charger RT, the guy told me he didnt read any emails he got that were from dukeboys or gl or etc @yahoo.com. So I kinda had the chance to buy it because of a normal email address.

Back in 78 my nephew decided to join the Army and was selling his 70 RT. I was 17 and said crap I just bought another car (i had 4 other mopars at the time). I asked my mom to co-sign for 1000, and she did. I went to go get the car and my nephews mom (my half sister) said noway because you won't pay it back. I whined and convinced her to finally take the money after i threw the money on the table and refused to leave  I still have the car. A few years ago I went to go look at a 70 Cutlass SX 455 Turnpike cruiser a friend told me about for 1500. I got there and combed over the car for 30 min and said so you want 1500 right he sad no I dont want to sell it. He said I did awhile back but changed my mind. I checked on it a year later and he sold it

This is FAR more common than you might think.

I've kicked a few guys off the property when they acted like idiots and lowballed me. I just don't have the patience for butt heads anymore. I remember once I was selling my panther pink 70 Challenger R/t and a certain E body flipper from Winnipeg told me that pink cars were all over the place. I just snapped and told him to get off my property pronto and not come back. I think he wanted the Challenger shaker setup I had and some NOS Challenger quarters too, glad I didn't sell anything to him.

Only once, & it was a friend of mine who was selling a 1969 Charger RT/SE that was EXTREMELY ROUGH! I think it had sentimental value to him, so he wanted to see the car restored. It had been his first car that he bought around 1979 or 1980 & had been off the road since the mid 80's when it needed a lot of work. He knew I was planning to build a Charger convertible, so he was terrified that I was going to cut the roof off & outright said NO WAY!    

I wanted to buy it sometime around 1993 & it was scary. At that time there wasn't a single panel or piece of frame that didn't have big holes from rust. I did want it for the rear clip to graft onto my Coronet. All the NOS or used replacement parts he had collected over the years for it would have been handy. I doubt I'd attempt to ever fix it & wouldn't have scrapped it, but probably just sell the shell & whatever I didn't need to some other glutten for punishment.

Yeah, I'd have likely parted out the RT/SE, but only because there were no sheet metal parts available back then & it needed everything. Ironically, he sold the car to another guy we knew who had promised to restore it, but for a number of reasons, didn't. The car to this day has been sitting outside since the mid 80's in rain, snow & sun, & is now up to it's rocker panels in mud & surrounded by weeds that are now 6 to 8 inches in diameter. (also known as trees)

The guy who refused to sell it to me admitted he made a mistake selling it to the guy he did sell it to.  

Here's a photo I took of the car at least 10 years ago. Don't let the photo fool you, the car is a lot worse than it looked 10 years ago. Can't imagine what's left of it now, I haven't seen it in about 3 or 4 years.

Back when i first was getting into mopars in high school, i joined a local mopar club. the Club president, this jerk named Herb, told everybody in the club to NOT sell me a mopar because I was a punk kid who would just destroy it. I still ended up buying a 64 Polara, and am still into mopars to this day. despite this prick trying his best to get me to leave.

I've also been the owner refusing to sell a car before too. Once i had a 77 dodge aspen. /6 car, i dont remember the exact mileage but somewhere around 36-39k miles on it. It was in real nice shape, interior was immaculate. 2 door car. I was asking 800. he came up and said he would buy it, and handed me a check for $200. when i asked for the rest he said thats all i'm paying for it. so i tore the check up, locked the car up and told him to get bent. This was at a local mopar show. He came back 3 more times offering more, finally offering my asking price of 800. I told him it was 2500 to him, because he's a jerk. I sold the car for the asking price about 3 weeks later to someone who liked the car and didn't argue with the price.

Just putting that one out there so you know, sometimes the owner won't sell because of the BUYER.

Had a car salesmen at a dodge dealer refuse to sell me a 1984 dodge daytona, he refused to let me even test drive it even though i drove up in the old charger r/t.  He later learned his lesson when i promptly pulled my old car into the side parts lot, walked in to the owners office, who I knew from delivering his paper for the previous two years and had met in person numerous times and explained I was a recent college graduate, with a fresh commission in the air force as an officer, and had 4000.00 burning a hole in my pocket.  I got an apology from the owner, the salesman likely got escorted out for being a moron.  I still left without the new car, i decided to just buy a used one from my dad instead. 

Also had a guy refuse to sell me a 71 boss 351 because i was too young.  He wanted too much for it anyway, asking a rediculous 3000.00 for a 60k original mile white with black stripes original 351 boss. 

I did almost get a 70 GTO convertible with a ram air IV 4spd, the salesman offered an even trade for my charger r/t se, or 2600,  I tried to get my dad to get it instead, who made two offers but never closed the deal....both of us were disappointed years later when the gto's crossed the 100k mark.

Had an uncle price his 70 Fury out of my budget..he told me $3500 because I only had 2500 and then sold it for $1500 to one of his buddies.

The reason being it was too fast for me and he didn't want me killing myself in it or so was the story.

Lord Warlock thats a rare one.  Not too often a salesman at a regular lot will refuse someone, those guys will typically even try to get the finance company to sign up a homeless guy.

My best friend's dad saw a car for sale in front of a house with a FOR SALE sign on it.  He knocked on the door and asked the man who answered about buying the car.  The man promptly told him to "get the !#?& off my property!" and slammed the door in his face.  Guess this guy's old lady made him put it up for sale and he kept it his by driving off potential buyers.

I had a similar problem when I was trying to buy my '70. This was back in the late '80's.
I was 19, and the car was across the country. When I told the guy how old I was (hey, he asked), he told me "NO" and hung up the phone on me. He wouldn't even talk to me when I tried to call him back. I had to finally get my dad to call him to persuade him that I was serious.
All good things came to an end & I was able to buy the car. Funny thing is, we still exchange Christmas cards.
