Hurricane Sandy flood damaged '68 Hemi Charger R/T, 4 speed, GG1 green/black top/stripe.  I hope somebody saves it, I literally would sell a kidney, testicle, and maybe a lung for that thing.

What kind of idiot would turn a 68 Hemi Charger with 60,000 miles over to the insurance company?  Doesn't matter if it's not original. :image_294343:

Milage is off by 10 thousand and I dont think it has 4 air bags.... 154 large to repair?  :hah: what am I not seeing here
Restoring a charger is like a saying I heard along time ago "I never said it would be easy, I only said it would be worth it".... Jesus I wish I could remember who said that...

Blusmbl

Somebody on Moparts found it, and there is a discussion over there on the car too.  Apparently all saltwater flood cars are totalled.  The only way to fix it correctly is to completely disassemble it, dip the body, and rebuild from the ground up.  The "repair" cost is the same as the actual cash value, which probably isn't that out of line for a full concours quality, nut and bolt resto on a very rare car.

I probably should've clarified, I'd also only go Lance Armstrong style if it ran.

Thats absolutely ridiculous. Our insurance rates go up because of crap like this.  :flame:  someone decided to get paid $154k large and just let the car sit and get flooded in their garage. Anyone with the money to own a car like this has the money to hire a tow truck to take it somewhere safe.. Probably had it for sale and realized this was an easy way out.. They knew this hurricane was coming for a week why in hell would you not get a car like this out of harms way???
i live in CHARGERLAND.. visitors welcome. 166 total, 7 still around

Well, if it's a SALT water flood (which it probably is since it was from Long Island)....
The ENTIRE car would need to come apart. I mean everything. Then the body would need to be chemically dipped, neutralized, and then e-coated to ensure against further corrosion. Depending on the water level, you'd need to do this to almost EVERYTHING.
If salt water got into the engine that's another story. I'm sure the entire interior, harnesses etc are gonzo as well. Windows look a little fogged so you know water got inside.

Is it worth saving? Sure it is, especially if it's a legit car. But unless you're prepared to do much of the work yourself another proper resto on that car is gonna be expensive.

it is still would be less work than what some on this post have done, and on cars not nearly as valuable.

Probably because he knew the insurance company would give actually him $154K and if he put it up for sale he'd get a bunch of tire kickers offering 10K and the guys on here would say 'What a roach, that radiator support isn't correct, so 40-50K tops' in threads over and over until noone was interested anymore.

The same idiot that found himself upside down in it, couldn't sell it for the $100K he wanted, and due to a natural disaster, he made bank.

Hate to say it, but if all I was getting was a bunch of wannabee looky-loos lowballin' me, I'd let the General lee sink till it was gone and make bank too.
Why save a $25-$40K car, when you can let it go and get $100K??

Absolutely, but the insurance company really overpaid for it, must have been some agreed value policy.  This place is not far from me, gonna keep an eye on when it is available to be inspected and go down with a friend of mine in the restoration business for the hell of it. Since nothing was done immediately to minimize the damage, I am sure lots will have to be done to get it back in shape.
too many to list!

bill440rt

Amazing.  ::)
We hear people complain all the time how their insurance company didn't pay, tried to "rip off" customers, underpaid, etc.
Now the insurance company pays full agreed value (so we've speculated), & now their accused of over-paying.  ::)
Gimme a break.

And how exactly do we know the owner was over his head? Was he trying to sell this car & couldn't? He was broke & needed the money? We know this for a fact??
Pure speculation.

It is what it is. Salt water flood damages. The insurance company determined to total it & pay "agreed value", so we think.
A friend of mine also lost his '74 Pantera due to salt water flood from Sandy.

I agree with the OP:

Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Gimme a break. Tis true none the less. Agreed/asking/what owner thinks it's worth/etc; value is the same exact value that gets HAMMERED here when time to try and sell. I offer the BB1Kikgas01 thread for example.
And how exactly do we know the owner was over his head? Was he trying to sell this car & couldn't? He was broke & needed the money? We know this for a fact?? Obviously no fact BUT, if he weren't over his head, I don't care how many were telling me to get out of Dodge, My DODGE would be going with me if it hadda Hemi. I can't help but think this guy would be no different.

A friend of mine also lost his '74 Pantera due to salt water flood from Sandy. Why was this? Not enough time? OR........Was it worth more IN THIS ECONOMY to let it go?
