Factory Front Disk Brakes on a 68 Charger RT

I have located a 68 project Charger RT 440 Automatic that has the fender tag code for front disk brakes.  I knew that there were some built but this is the first one I have seen.

Does anyone have information as to how many 68 Chargers were equiped with front disk brakes?

Ghoste

I don't think it was ever really broken down that way.  Someone like Galen Govier can likely tell you what percentage of 1968 B-bodies had discs and he may even tell you what percentage of Chargers had them but you'd have to call him and ask.  Good luck.

WINGMAN

I cant tell you about 68 but in 69 there were only 5088 chargers that had them outa 90.000 built. My 69 500 has them and they really haul it down faster than my daytona with drums. Parts are vary expensive, rotors are like $200.00 each and you will need to send the calipers in to be resleaved at $50.00 a hole times eight.    JR. :icon_smile_cool:

I would say they are fairly rare, and that rarity brings up an issue I've heard of people having with stock disc brakes: They are difficult to find parts for and after almost 40 years they probably aren't in too good of shape. Unless someone is starting to reproduce the stock setups (which I don't think is the case) you would have to have the originals rebuilt. You'd probably be better off removing the stock ones and storing them before buying an aftermarket setup to use on the car.

I've never seen the hubcapps on that e-bay car,. You?..

That or the later style seventies E and B setups.  Even the mid seventies A- bodies work great..

Hey tttaziz, does that source list the number for 1967?

tttaziz

Ghoste,

Yep, the 1967 number is 764 (5.21% of output).

Ghoste

Wow thanks.  I haven't heard of that source before and a quick look on the net didn't turn up anything.  It doesn't provide a % for 67 Chargers with vinyl tops does it?

I just sold a set of calipers I had purchased for my 68.  Cheeper to go with a 72 set up it will bolt up fine and be a fraction of the cost.

Automotive News Almanacs are annual automobile industry statistical issues.  They list installation rates on some, but not all options on different car lines.

2,067 of U.S. 1967 Chargers had vinyl roofs.  13.09% of production.

Hey, while you're at it, what is the vinyl roof % on the '68s?

Ghoste

Thanks.  That's a higher number than I had heard before but it's the first number I've ever heard with something factual behind it to back it up.  So a 67 with vinyl top and factory discs is a pretty uncommon bird.
I'll have to be a little kinder to the old girl this summer.  Nahhhhhhh.

Sorry for the hijack folks.

Last of the hijack:

73,222 1968 U.S. Chargers  (79.20%)  had vinyl roofs.

They are less common on a 68 than a 69 or 70 Ron. This 383 car has them, because it has just about every other option for a 68.
