USAC was the midwest equivalent to NASCAR in a sense although they sanctioned other forms of racing in addition to closed oval stock cars.  Don White was a Mopar stalwart in the series for years and a great driver.  There are a lot of people on the site much better versed than I am to answer the question though.  Aero426 would be a good one to ask.

Actually, it's Buddy Baker in the Ray Fox Dodge Charger.
Baker drove for him before he went to Cotton Owens.
Charlie Glotzbach was driving for Owens before he went to Nichels in 1970.

Musical seats...
I've never owned anything but a MoPar. Can you say that?

Am I correct at least that Don White used that number on his Chargers in USAC?

Troy

Sarcasm detector, that's a real good invention.

That's definately Buddy Baker in his Ray Fox 68 Charger.  Don White's cars were pale yellow with Black painted tops.  White raced in the mid-west on the USAC circuit.  cool picture.

Depends on the year. He was #1 in 68. I know he was #3 in 1970.  In 1971 he was #5. (driving the 'old' #88 Daytona from Chrysler Engineering)
He later was #9 and even #93!   His #93 was the #88, re-bodied to a 73 Charger skin.  It ended up running on dirt, before being put behind Don's race shop in Keokuk, Iowa.
Thanks to Doug S. for finding the last known "running" photo of "DC-93"...

Would a USAC driver have come east to run a NASCAR event at that time?

odcics2

Yes, but rarely. Usac rules were more lenient so their cars usually couldn't pass Nascar specs.

And all this time, I thought that National Geograpic only had articles & pictures about ugly naked jungle people with flap-jack boobies and weird piercings.   :shruggy:

It appears the photo is from the 1968 Dixie 500 at Atlanta Int'l Raceway (now Motor Speedway). The race was run on August 4th and Buddy Baker held the pole position with a 153.361 mph lap in his Ray Fox '68 Charger. Unfortunately, they only completed 25 laps when the crew stripped the lug bolt threads on their first pit stop (most likely when the photo was taken). Baker would finish 1968 with one win and 13th in points, he would run for Fox in 1969 as well...
