My brother just sent me the article.

http://latimesblogs.latimes.com/lanow/2012/12/dmv-takes-orders-for-retro-license-plates.html?utm_medium=referral&utm_source=pulsenews

"The California Department of Motor Vehicles is taking orders for license plates that mirror ones issued from the 1950s to the 1970s.

The state needs 7,500 orders by Jan. 1, 2015, to print the "legacy license plates," which have either blue, black or yellow backgrounds. Drivers must fill out a form, which is available on the DMV website, and pay $50. If the state does not meet the order threshold, it will refund the application fees."

I wish TN would do that.   The old school ones are shaped like the state.

Then again, Wyoming and Colorado have had that for years, but I digress:

[ŌŌ]ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ[ŌŌ] = 68
[ŌŌ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖƖ][ŌŌ] = 69

Already on this. You just need to get the plates from Ebay or somewhere and get them verified at the DMV and BAM! you get black plates on your old car.

Cant wait to get my transferred over. :2thumbs:

I believe you can have custom plates according to what the article says, so you can get sayings like "6T8 440" or something but on a black and yellow plate. It'd make people do a double take haha.

Va. recently did just this too. We can now order the Antique plates with anything for lettering/numbers we want.

I have "CQB-241" on Christine, as that's the tag from the movie and ordered a yellow plate.

There's a few catches and gotchas to consider (see the FAQs). But it is the real deal.

Be aware that it could be as many as three full years before you see the plates. And even if on this January 2nd the minimum of 7500 orders is reached (after one day), it is 9 to 12 months before plates are available.

That said, it's cool.

Wow. It's incredible to me that California politicians, usually so hellbent on dishing out takeaways and eliminating freedom, would actually give something to the owners of evil, fossil fuel guzzling, earth-killing collector cars of all people.

its a catch 22 for me...because Im so impatient that I don't wanna wait 2-3 years for the plates, so I won't order them til I know for sure they will put them out.

They're late to the party too. For years people have had to try finding decent plates and spend gobs of money to have them restored, and now that most of them have finally gotten the issue ironed out on their own the state comes up with a solution to a 30-year-old problem. You go, gubment!

Ponch ®

im probably just gonna try to find some "clean" black plates on ebay or at a swapmeet and register them to the Satellite. And I dunno why I care, but I want the numbers to be year correct (or at least close), so they're gonna have to start with a X, Y, or Z. Sure, that may take me a while...but probably a lot less than waiting 2 years!

The problem is waiting 3 years & knowing Calif. so well. it will probably be even longer & more money than they currently want too....

So well on the way to being launched.

MONEY changes everything.  They know that many citizens would love to do this and what better way to earn some much needed money to fund a corrupt government than to get it from evil car owners; government, freaking whores man.

I'll place an order, although 3 years is a little ridiculous-we could all be zombies by then...

Update - the count is at 6697. It's easy now to hit the 7500 mark. The DMV estimates that it will be 9 months until the first plates are issued. That should be the summer of 2014.

Ponch - time to order.

Don't count on these looking exactly like the originals. This is from the Calif. DMV site...

Q13: Are the Legacy Plates going to look exactly like the license plates issued in the 1950's, 1960's, and 1970's?
A: No. Current law requires license plates to be reflectorized and modern manufacturing processes may not allow for an exact replication of the original plates. The images shown on the website and REG 17L are for illustrative purposes only.  The final design of the plate will differ; however, as many characteristics of the original plates as possible will be applied.

Update - the pre-orders have blown by the 7500 required number. Nearly 8000 paid for. So these plates will happen, but of course when is the problem (being the DMV). And the final design has not been posted.
