Painting on stripes...I have a few questions

I'm going to do the V21 treatment to my '70 (it's an Original  V21 car, can you believe there were only 287 Total!) Anyway here's my questions:

1) Taping - If I scuff too close to the tape I may damage it allowing paint to leak through, if I don't do it close enough I'm thinking I'll have adhesion problems. Any tricks here?

2) Paint - I was going to shoot semi-gloss Omni® (to simulate the Organisol) over 9 year old Omni® Base/Clear any special considerations?

3) Other - Anyone do this type of thing before? Any tips

Thanks in advance!

I would use somthing like 3M fineline tape, very thin tape so that you can scuff it without damaging the tape.
Lay down the first coat very thin, and let it dry for 10-15 min, then a full coat.
Let it dry so that you can touch the paint without it sticking, then take of the tape and masking.
Take the fineline tape of last, pull it back with a 45" angle.

Run a line of tape for scuffing it,then take it off and remask it. For paint. When I paint stuff like this, I mask it to it close ,but not tight to the line. Then timeline mask it last . That way you can remove just the fineline after you paint without risking all that other masking bumping the fresh work.

Fineline tape, 45° angle...got it!

- So Norway, you're saying you can scuff over the fineline and it doesn't hurt it?

- 1HT, I'm thinking matching the 2nd tape set to the scuffed area is going to be tough, does it line up pretty easyor do I need a Laser line or anything :-)

I just want as crisp of a line as possible.

Yes, the tape is made of some sort of vinyl.
You can scuff the fine line edges with a 3m scuff pad, no problem  :2thumbs:

I've had good luck with line tape. Sorry I don't know who makes, but it's orange, works like a charm! Also, you can get some pencil sanders from a craft or hardware store(s). They're like a pencil only made of sand paper, coming to a point, for the delicate stuff. I would final prep with red or grey scotch brite, shouldn't hurt the tape.

The tape is tough, but I don't like to take that chance. Couple tiny weeps in the line would drive me nuts. This is not a high production thing. Take the time and the results will speak for themselves.
