Ex's don't always treat you right, but mans best friend does!
So here is a little question for you guys, hopefully someone has been there done that!

Here is my boy Rocky....he's 13...this is a before shot

He got sick, all within a couple of hours, face swelled, kept licking his front legs and scratching his nose, for days. Went all raw and pimpley looking. Off to the vets we go, she has no clue, gave him two needles, one for swelling, who knows what the other one was for...and antibioytics.
He's better now, very playful and such, but looks like this...

anyone been through this?

68 CHARGER R/T

if he's drinking alot of water it's just a cold they have, usually their noses stay cold when their healthy ,but when they have a cold their warm  :Twocents:

Ram07

He swelled up, lost his fur around is nose, all within an hour...look at the pic....the newest one, he's all black on the snout...no hair...strange.

68 CHARGER R/T

wow i just noticed that  ,maybe some sort of reaction from the needle, i know my dog whenever  she get's a needle she goes down and just wants to sleep   , how's his eating

Ram07

No, no, no....needle stopped whatever the hell was growing on his face, now looks like this...paid $500 for vets last visit, cant afford follow ups, just wondering if anyone elses dogs face swelled up, got gross looking and lost his hair....my vet is confused. I cant afford to make her smarter...

Can't tell by the pics, but what breed/mix is he?Weight? Don't take this the wrong way,he's 13,anything of medium to large breed dogs is pushing it from 13 on.Treat every day like it was his last,at that age things are happening inside him you can't see,and at the drop of a hat it could be over pretty fast.
How do I know,I had an awesome black lab/chow mix,61 lbs., that gave me not a days trouble through his life, every year it was just his reg shots. After he turned 10,my vet was impressed at how well he was doing for that age, then 12,and 13,she really started saying I was having a great run with this dog, still doing everything under his own power.
I started wondering, wow,I've got a few good years left in him. Then he started being fussy about his food, drinking lots of water, having very loose stool, walking shaky, for about a month or so.Had to feed him soft food to get him to eat as he did'nt want his dry food at all anymore. Then one day,one month before he was going to be 14 years old, snowy, school canceled friday morning,he came in from outside to have his breakfast, and fell over on his side, and started breathing real heavy and short.Rushed him to the vet, took one look at him and said his spleen burst.Blood in his stomach confirmed it.
Knew what was coming next as he was to old to be having surgery.Out came the needles, and within minutes it was over.As big of a guy you might think you are,if you don't get choked up when your dog goes, there's something wrong with you.
7am I had a dog,10am I was coming home with a leash.I felt robbed,it happened way to fast,felt I did'nt get to cherish his last good days with him,etc.
Like I said, not trying to get you upset, and hoping positive for many more days/months/years with your buddy, but start treating it like it like you might not have him tommorrow, and whenever it happens, you will feel and know you bonded with him the most you possibly could have.

Ram07

Ram07

Btw 69 OUR/TEA, had my last boy of many years put down...Ima pretty big guy myself, 6'3 240lbs, not ashamed to say I cried like a baby for days after....its like I lost a family member!

Well considering a dog explores the world using their snout, sniffs with it, eats with it, roots around with it, I'd say he got into something he was allergic to or that inflamed him.    It'd be easier to figure out if you knew exactly where he'd been before this happened... did he get loose recently and dig into something?    I have a dog that roots in the ground with his nose when burying things, and sometimes he tries to do it on his nylon bedding and rubs himself raw because he can't dig, so he rubs it over and over.

Any ideas there?

Ram07

Well, since we both got kicked out of our country home 3 yrs ago, he's pretty much an indoor guy now, 'cept for the back yard....like I said....he was fine, looked like he grew a pimple, face swelled...all within an hour....guess I'll never know, just hope for the best....Thanks for the replies guys!
 :2thumbs:

He was rubbing his nose bigtime tho....dont know why. :shruggy:

mrsskip68

Sounds like an allergic reaction to something. Have you changed his diet? Shampoo? How long ago did this happen? Do you have bee's? Sometimes even if a dog has been on the same pet food (especially dry) as they age their insides change as well. This can lead to a allergy to one of the first 5 ingredients stated on the bag. (Also if anyones dog food does not state a meat protein in the first five ingredients, pass on it!) One of the best foods for dogs with allergies is Lamb & Rice kibble. Glad to hear he pulled through. Keep us posted.

Been there on this one. It has happened to our various dogs many times over the years.

Where we live the cause is one these three: first, snake bite, 2nd bee sting, 3rd spider bite.

Doesn't mean those are your particular suspects, but in my part of the country, that is the reaction. We keep Benadryl on hand.

Our dogs have always recovered but it's scary.

we have a friend who's dog was allergic to the mulch they used, she looks like that all the time now

Ram07

Happened just about a week ago, no to the creepy crawlers or bees...its 17c out there and lots of snow. No change in his diet, but he did steal some pizza with mushrooms on it. I was thinking alergies as well.

RECHRGD

Sure sounds like an allergic reaction.  Several years ago when our new puppy had his first shots, after we got home we noticed the swelling eyes and scratching.  We rushed him back to to vet and he gave him a shot of benadryl.  It saved his life, because his windpipe was swelling shut also.  Always keep some benadryl around. :Twocents:

Thanks again, went and picked up some benadryl this morning! Knew there would be a few ideas showing up on here. :yesnod:

little update for those who care...seems like 5 dogs(within a block of my house) went through the same thing as my boy, one died because the vet would not answer an emergency call :icon_smile_dissapprove:. Seems it was a brand of treats that we all had in common, I'll get the name, but they contained honey in them...or maybe a bad batch...guess I was lucky!

No shit?  Please get the name asap.

Remember the average response time to a 911 call is over 4 minutes.

The average response time of a 357 magnum is 1400 FPS.

Throw away that factory crap and make him his own food.  It's cheap and easy and you know what he's getting.

I'll get the name in the morning, the treats were bought from the vets, not walmart or a pet store or anything.in the meantime, like somone told me....get benadryl, saved one puppies life. What the owner told me...looked like a pimple grew on his nose(like my dog) then just spread like crazy...dog was going nuts, his neck swelled up blocking the airway, but got it on time!

My mutt is on chicken and rice from now on....he's gonna eat better than me...for his treats he gets Beggin Strips, loves 'em!

Been a tough couple of weeks for ol' Rock, but he's a happy camper again... :2thumbs:

I know those "Milo's" brand treats have had several recalls on them as well! Google up puppy cookie recipies, there are tons! Easy to make and you can just bake them on a cookie sheet and cut into squares, or buy a dog bone shaped cutter! Store in airtight container! Fun to make with the kids too!  :2thumbs:

I hope everyone in the family knows which cookie is intended for whom.

They put them in the top cabinet so Skip can't reach them.

Um, bake? There would be an oven involved I'm guessing....I do have one, it fills an empty spot in the kitchen....did not come with instrutions...I'm a guy that actually reads 'em, so yeah....don't know how to use that machine!

Do have a new g/f now, so maybe she can show me what to do!
