Rust-Oleum "stops rust" they say

I've always wanted to ask this dumb question. There's no other paint out there that works harder at advertising the 'stops rust' feature. Is there really anything about the stuff that stops rust any better? I mean, when you use it the part is now covered in paint so that in itself will stop rust, right? Is it just a simple ad gimmick or what?

Well, all I can say is Eastwoods' Rust Encapsulator.

When I first got my car, I spray painted around the tail panel to keep it from rusting anymore than it already was.  I haven't noticed any additional rust forming from what was already there.

i agree. I use SEM Rust Seal but it's the same basic principal.

Personally I like POR15, been on my trunk pan for ~10 years and still holding strong.

no more weather than what most of these cars see,  any good quality paint applied properly would do the trick.

I'm not the expert on this.  But I think the deal with RO is that it originally had a stronger formulation (like decades ago) which worked more powerfully than it does now.  I think it had to be changed for toxic reasons.

Yup use to have zinc in it. Nomore though.

Seriously doubt you'll find anything in a rattle can that stops rust.

Zinc isn't illegal.  A person could buy some RO in raw cans and put zinc back into it.

You can buy zinc chromate primer in a rattle can as well. It's just some stuff you don't want to breath.  There's a less toxic brand of it, but can't remember the name.  Aircraft use both of these items.

The70RT

It also comes in quart & gallon cans and is a lot thicker formula.

Yup but i searched high and low to find expoxy with zinc in it and no dice.

I use spray bomb paints to protect my junk while in the "Bodywork" stage and has to sit outside. Works pretty well. I wouldn't count on it for a long term fix, but it protectsa pretty good while I'm working on the rest of it. One helluvalot better than primer.

Never used Rust-Oleum on a car.  I have used it many times over with metal lawn furniture and it sucks.  I would prep the metal very well, put many coats on, and the only thing that was consistent - IT WOULD START RUSTING THE NEXT SPRING.

I've used Eastwoods product on the car, and seems to hold up well! :2thumbs:
