UPDATE: HE BACK. Had To Install an Alarm System in Garage

This is the crappy part of our hobby that I hate. I've let my bro-in-law (Dave) kept his late wife's 41 Harley Knuckle Head in my shop. It actually belongs to his late wife's brother. Dave was dating a real bar whore last fall and she was over in the shop with him a few times, they have since broke up. Dave is currently in FLA, he called my wife last Friday AM in a panic that several bad dudes now know about the Bike and my Charger's, and they were coming over to take the bike, and we needed to get the bike out immediately. All this gets dumped in my lap 2 1/2 hours before a job interview

. I called a buddy who installs alarm systems and he was here first thing Monday and installed a alarm system. I'm still leery about all this so the yard lights stay on all night and since my bedroom windows face the shop I keep a load shotgun and revolver under the bed.
I guess this is the price you pay for being a nice guy. I've been taking advantage of and shit on, on more than one occasion and I've had enough. I'm done doing favors for people, especially relatives.
The alarm system cost me $700.00. Should I make my bro-in-law pay for half of it?

Make him store it somewhere else, your well being is more important than a bike & especially if it isn't even his.

He should be paying 100% of it. But, I'm thinking that aside from selling the bike and taking the money out of the proceeds, you have a slim chance of getting it out of him.

It hadn't occurred to me that they'd go after anything other than the bike but, duh, with that sort of crowd, I suppose they'll go for anything they can.

I would make sure the simple things are taken care of as well. Several good locks on the service doors. Bars on the inside of the windows. make it extremely hard for them to get in. Make your deterents visible as well. If the alarm does go off that means they have already gotten through. Damage and repair costs? Make it so plainly visible that breaking in aint that easy and maybe they wont even try.

Be happy your own cars are safer now.
Write Dave's late wifes brother a certified letter telling him he needs to come get the motorcycle, that you are putting it outside the garage unguarded, and are relinquishing responsibility over watching it. Let his insurance cover the theft problem.

If Dave is your brother -in- law - doesn't that mean he was married to your sister ??

tell him to pack up his bike and blow. Let him pay the 50 a month for a storage locker.

Or if he refuses to pay for the alarm charge him 50.00 a month for rent and storage. If he don't then sell the bike or wheel it to the curb

Take apart the knucklehead in the garage and ship it to the knucklehead in Florida........... and stay clear of future knuckleheads! Seriously, he should AT LEAST pay for 1/2 the alarm cost....... and maybe double check your insurance coverage in case there is a theft...... hopefully you won't need the scatter gun. Well the good news is the owner of the bike(Allen) came up from CT yesterday and took the bike. He told me that Dave called him last July, wanted to get the bike running and then bring it down to him. Dave told me that he talked to Allen and Allen said he could get the bike running and then register it and run it. Two very different stories.
The other problem is Dave was in a motorcycle accident last Monday in Pensacola,FLA. Had to have surgery to relieve swelling of the brain (No helmet since he's a Harley rider). The Doc says he's going to need long term physical and speech therapy. They discharged him from the hospital Friday since he has no money, no insurance ,no physical assets they can take. He's now staying with my sister-in-law until he is well enough to be transported to his son's house in Raleigh, NC. Talk about someone who is a burdon to his family.

I have Dave's 8x12 storage shed in my back yard filled with all his worldly possessions. I might have to auction off his junk. He has 2 large boxes of reading material (Hustler, Penthouse, Variations??). Can I get an opening bid

Nonetheless I think it's BS that Dave was so "tough" that he needed to go riding a motorcycle w/out a helmet.
Nice to know he will be spending away Our Social Security $$ now that he's disabled.
I'll think of this next time i look at my paycheck , and my motorcycle riding gear [ helmet, gloves, leather jacket, steel toed boots, etc]

don't mean to be a hardass, I am sorry for the way it came out. but I have found things easier by putting the "troubled people" ( ie: people who will show shady characters my stuff) out of my life.

I say this from experience. I used to get into a little trouble when I was in my mid 20's. fights, an arrest, etc... I never felt I directly did anything to cause any of it, never started a fight or instigated anything. But I started asking myself why was I even in that situation. I stopped hanging out with a certain group and my problems seemed to go away. I never found myself pepper sprayed or in the "wrong" side of town after that.

I feel bad for this guy, he did not go showing every scurve in the hood his nice stuff, but someone close to him did.

It doesn't matter if you're wearing a helmet or not. Sure, your chances for survival are greater. You can't hold that against him.
Shit happens for a reason. This very well could make him see the light, who knows. Right now, he needs support, not some in law threatening to sell the only things he has left in life. I guess you've never been in his shoes.

And the $700 to me is money well spent. Isn't there a peace of mind now for your Charger. I mean if they want to get in there bad enuf they will. Also having that alarm should lower your home insurance. Now pay off the alarm and put in a sprinkler system.

Good News. I just found out, is that Dave is doing alot better than the Doc's predicted and now their saying 4-6 months he'll be good as new.
Mike, I didn't tell the entire story. Four years ago Dave brought his crappy metal shed over after his GF gave him da boot. He promised he'd move it out with-in a year. I let him use my shop and tools whenever he wants. He also stores his own Harley in my garage (for free). I have to pretend to listen to him when he comes over complaining about his latest GF while he's wired on coke. I bailed him out of jail last September on a drug charge. I paid his fines last November (after he plead guilty) so he wouldn't loose his license (maybe that wasn't a good idea). He's an experienced CNC operator. I've gotten him interviews with two local companies but he keeps failing the piss test because of his drug use. I'm sorry but my sympathy for him has been used and abused and I have none left.
BTW,I'm not going to ask Dave for any money for the alarm system. I was going to install one in the future anyway, it's just that I haven't worked for 2 months due to an elbow injury and I could have used that money for more important things.

Been there done that way more then once. Main reason I'm not close to my parents and the reason I have no friends in Wisconsin any more. Its also why I became very reclusive over the years. At least everything is working out for you.

I get home from work @ 7PM last Friday (another 12+ hour day). My wife tells me we need to pick up Dave at the bus station in 1 hour

I said go by yourself and he ain't staying here. My wife feels sorry for him so on Sunday he sleeps on our sun porch. By Tuesday night he's now sleeping in our spare bedroom. The reason he is here is that he is going through all the belongings in his shed, going to sell all the "good stuff" and move down to North Carolina where all the jobs are.

So last night I'm getting washed up for supper, I hear Dave come in and talk to the wife, as I come into the kitchen I see my wife's car heading down the road.
Me: WTF?
Wife: Dave needed a ride to the store to buy cigarette's and since I was getting supper ready he borrowed the car

Me:Does your brother have any auto insurance?
Wife: (In a flippant reply) Probably not.
I can not type the next 5 minutes of conversation since this is a family site. When Dave got back and admitted he had no insurance i told him he was never to drive one of our fucki#g cars again and stormed out of the house and spent the next 4 hours in my shop.

This is the latest saga. Last July Dave quit his machinist job up here and moved to NC and pitched a tent in his son's (Corey)backyard. Corey booted him after he found Dave doing drugs, Corey has 3 young kids. Dave moves in with his sister in Pensacola, FLA and promises to clean up and get a job, she kicked him out last week since the only job he found was mowing the lawn at the bar for free beer

She gave him $300.00 (and she's struggling to keep her house since her husband left her and refuses to help with the payment). Dave heads back to Corey's, bike breaks down 200 miles from Corey's, Dave has already burned through all the money, Corey goes to pick him and the bike up. (Dave ran the bike out of oil and blew the motor). Corey gives Dave $100.00 and bus ticket to here (thanks Corey).

My wife just got off the phone with Corey and her sister. She is beside herself. Dave has giving everyone a different story on what he's going to do. I told her every time she offers him something it just means it's that much longer he will stay here. She finally has accepted the fact that Dave is a "professional moocher". She also knows that this has put a huge strain on our marriage. I have not had a vacation since I started my new job three years ago so I have NO tolerance for someone like Dave. She finally agreed that Sunday morning we are giving him the boot. I do feel a little guilty but at what point do you say enough? My other bro-in-law (the good one) suggested we all pitch in and each give him $100.00 to send him back to N.C. I said that's exactly what Dave is hoping for. I'm afraid it's time to cut the cord for good.

BTW, the roof of his shed collapsed last winter and his prized collection of smut got ruining.

Hmmmmmm, Drugs, Bikers, Thieves, Bar Whores, Legal Troubles, Lies, Promises.......I agree with the bus ticket and a "small" amount of cash to get him back down south to wherever he needs to go (and stay). Did you say this guy was in his 40's? And he still can't get it together? Then I am guessing he never will. Or that if he does it will have to be on his own. Be prepared for the big emotional anger outburst about how your just throwing him out into the street. (seems he was in the street before you let him stay) This guy is just a nightmare waiting to happen. How long before he steals something to pay a drug debt? How long before some people (drug dealers/bikers) he wronged show up at your house to "collect" Who's to say he's not doing and or selling drugs right now? You know where this is all going. Today is a new day for Bro to start a new life.......somewhere else. Although I would say he's welcome back anytime he's clean and sober and employed without legal troubles.....and has his own place to stay!

Gave Dave to word this afternoon that he can no longer stay with us. A friend promised him a temporary bike but that never happened. After supper I asked him if he called his other friend about staying there for the night, "Oh I forgot" was the reply. I went in and told my wife, call your parents he ain't staying here tonight. They just picked him up and they ain't happy.

The wife is now feeling guilty, Dave's a master at that. She said it would make more sense for him to stay here while he cleans out his shed. Since his shed is next to my shop I keep an eye on him. He has spent quite a few hours reading his Easy Rider mags while chain smoking his butts. This shed is only 10x16, how can it take eight days to go through it

Dave is 55 y.o. He is just a shell of the guy that I met 28 years ago when I was dating my wife. Just goes to show you what drugs will do.

I will tell you this. I have a brother-in-law who is on his 3rd marriage. I almost came to blows with him right in front of his parents and my wife. His 2nd wife was in a minor accident(they were still married). My wife and I showed up and all he could do was piss and moan because he didn't know what kind of damage was done to the car, who the other person was, etc. His parents, my in-laws, were backing him up and talking crap about his wife because they didn't like her. I told them all straight out that they were being total a##wipes. They had no concern for her, just how it affected them. He walked across the yard to get in my face and try to scare me. I stepped right up to him and told him to "Go ahead. I've been waiting for this for 10 years." He backed down and never got in my face or talked crap about his wife around me again. It has been about 6 years since that day. In that time, his family has come to realize that the women he meets are not the issue. My wife and I are still friends with his 2nd wife Lori.

I guess what I am saying is to stand your ground. Make sure your wife and his family know you are not making this decision because you personally dislike him, but because his choices put your family's safety at risk. His family may not like what you are doing now, but they will respect the fact that you are making decisions to keep your family safe. Eventually they will come around. Sounds like you already have other family members who will back you up on this.

I find it funny that his parents were not happy. Was that because they thought you were being unreasonable or because they had to take him to their house now.
