What makes a Charger Rallye?

And how was it available?  Could it be ordered with any engine but was mandatory with high performance ones?

RallyeMike

Depending on the year, available with 318, 340, 360, 400, or 440. All 440 cars after 1972 were automatics.

But it was still an optional package if you ordered a big block car or 340 or 360 four barrel?

I believe this is correct.  The Rallye was basically an appearance package that could be ordered with any engine (the 340 was killed after 1973).  Of note: On the Plymouth side, the Road Runner also became an appearance package EXCEPT if you ordered a 440 engine with it, at which point the car was called a "Road Runner GTX."

Actually the Road Runner was still a stand alone model through 74.  What items made up the Rallye Package for the Chargers?

Iron Chef

I'm sure '73's and 74's differed in their offerings, but this is from an article in Mopar Muscle Magazine about a 1972 Charger Rallye:

The Rallye Charger would be available in either a coupe or a hardtop model, and incorporated all the trim and flair necessary to verify the Rallye as a performance vehicle. Available with a domed hood, blackout stripes and hood treatment, unique grille, and Rallye-specific doors with scallops and taillamps, the Rallye would also feature a wide array of powerplants. At the top of the '72 lineup was the four-barrel 440 (watered down to a measly 280 hp), available only in the Rallye and SE packages. The 383 was opened up to 400ci inches and served as the biggest plant for the base trim Charger. Besides those two big-blocks, the usual engine lineup was available: the 340, the 318, and the 225 slant six. Though weak in the power department, the Rallye did offer superior handling prowess over its elder siblings.

74Rallye

In 73 & 74, I believe the Rallye appearance package got you front & rear sway bars, Rallye gage package and a power bulge hood with the blackout painted on.

'72 has front and rear sway bars too

Ghoste

So is the 72 package different in any way from the 73-74 one?

Chargerguy74

The 340 (in 72/73) and the 440 (non WP29) as well as the L code 360 (for 74) required the Rallye package.

Also, check out the dealer data books on the Hamtramck Historical site . You can compare the A57 package between years, as well as what engine options required the A57 package.

is is true?  I'll have to look around a bit.  I thought '73 still offered this.
'74 Rallye 4spd (WH23L4) (1 of 94)
'74 Rallye Auto (WH23L4) (quad black)
'69 Swinger 340 - 4spd
'70 Duster 340 - 4spd

Ghoste

Thats what I thought too but if I knew anything I wouldn't be asking all of these questions in the first place I suppose.
