Any one else using it? My old PC died the other day. Ran out and got a new ASUS PC. At first start up Windows 8 really sucked. It is set up like a smart phone using apps. The start up screen starts there. Once I figured out how to get past the apps screens and to windows explorer and IE it is great. Some things are a little different but not bad.

I'm still running XP and really like it. It's stable and runs everything I want, But my old system is starting to give me issues and I know that i'm probably going to be money ahead to just build myself another one. I beta tested Windows 7 and actually liked it but never bought it. There are a few sites that really don't like IE 8 any longer and I can't upgrade any higher than 8 with XP, so I guess Windows 7 or 8 is probably going to have to be it.  :scratchchin:

I've got windows 7  and I really like it but I do prefer the XP version of outlook better than the new windows live. You could be much more creative with it as well.
Plus I had to purchase the "Ofice home and student" software as well because unlike XP, widows 7 didn't come with powerpoint or word.

Don't know what windows 8 comes with.

I downloaded Windows 8 "upgrade" to my laptop running Windows 7 and can't get it to install....a quick Google search shows I'm not alone.
Pardon me but my karma just ran over your dogma.

Fred

I thought about doing that then decided to stick with windows 7. Thanks for the warning.

Yes, using the old wireless mouse and the old monitor too. The new PC came with a new keyboard. I bought a SATA hard drive enclosure on ebay so I can put the old hard drive in it and get some files and pics off of it. Then I can use it as a storage device for back ups, till it dies.

For the record, windows doesn't come with any office apps by default other than generic notepad or a basic email client.   Some OEMs will bundle office (or individual parts of office) in there as part of a package.

In short, if you buy Win8 in the box, you won't get any office components and will have a very hard time installing any OEM Office apps from previous PC's on there.  You may buy a new OEM PC that has word or excel or even full-blown Office on it, but it's a separate license, and is non-transferrable.   The license goes with the machine legally.    It's almost always cheaper just to buy Office from your OEM when you buy the PC rather than on the open market.

Yes, XP was really good. The new PC came with windows 7 and it's pretty good too. I'm sticking with it until such time I need to get a new PC again but I'm hoping that won't be for a long time.

XP was the first OS that didn't try to blow up in your face every few minutes.  For whatever dumb ass reason they came out with Vista and then redeemed themselves and released winows 7.  So far so good, although they really need to fix their ie.  I see no reason to upgrade again though.  I can only hope they didn't screw it up again.
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

After about 10 minutes of trying things to restart the pc I finally went online to figure out how to do a restart. Why do simple things have to be difficult.

I know, I don't understand that either..........what should be simple and straight forward is often the hardest.   :shruggy:
Right up until you figure it out and then it couldn't be easier.
