Speedo Gauge Help

My speedo was jumping all over the place at low speeds it would steady out a bit at higher speeds but there was still some wobble of about 5 - 10 mph.

I bought a brand new Mopar replacement cable , installed and took it for a drive. It still jumps like crazy at low speeds and will steady out a bit btter at about 50-60 MPH ( according to the gauge) . There is a clicking sound as well when driving.

I am waiting for some decals to redo all my gauges,  so i will be pulling out the cluster and completely disassemble it. What can I look for in the speedo? I read the cluster resto thread and it mentioned something about the brushes being shot , the gauge is pretty much garbage??? It doesn't explain at all how to check for this.

Thanks???

When you pull your cluster out again, try tightening the spring on the speedometer itself.

Where is this spring that you speak of???

Its a 68 Charger R/T

Thanks

so i took apart the dash and pulled out the speedo. I found out what is causing the jumping needle and ticking sound.

The part that rotats around the center cyclinder ,i can spin it with my finger and can feel it bind during its rotation, and slight click as i push it past the bind. I post a picture showing the part, as it is sort of hard to describe.

can this be fixed or is my speedo toast???

I have the exact same problem. Steady at higher speeds, but it feels "sticky" at lower speeds. The needle sits at 0 km/h more or less until it shifts to 2:nd gear, then the needle jumps up. Thing is, last winter when I bought the car I dropped in a repro speedo. Sine the meter was new my thoughts went to the cable. But I am not sure, will pull the cluster and examine the speedo. I'll let you know.

I have also noticed that the gears that run the odometer do not turn. I cannot move them at all. There are two white plastic gears that run to the odometer , it is difficultat to see how it is actually attached to the center rotating assembly.    And i cannot seem to remove either gears

There's a small cog on the back end of the needle shaft, is it still there and intact?  Check the cluster thread again for detailed shots on how to do the odometer.  I also have pics in my thread here:  http://www.dodgecharger.com/forum/index.php/topic,86736.0.html
Extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence.

Not sure what you mean by cog?  All other piece are there, looked at the pictures my bushing is intact,  spring is fine.

The problem is actually, the odometer shaft/gear.  The main shaft / needle shaft, has a worm gear that makes contact with the first of two other worm gears that make up the odometer system.  This gear is seized, it will not move, as I turn the speedo I can watch the main gear as it attempts to rotate with the first odometer gear. This gear how ever will not move, as tension builds it eventually jumps the "teeth" on the gear and starts all over.  This is the bind that I am experiance, and the click is the tooth jumping.

I cannot figure out how to or if I can remove this gear.  The one end seems to be seated in some sort of bushing thats in the gauge housing, it looks like it may be able to be pressed out but I am a little afraid to try to much pressure and damage something else.  I have removed the other odometer gear that runs diagonally down to the odometer numbers but the other one is still my problem.

An Update for those that are interested.

I finally got  hold of the second speedo that I had, it was pretty much junk though, the bushing had fallen out and the sping was just spinning around.  BUT I was stil able to spin it and see that the gears for the odometer did not bind up like my original speedo.  I used this junk speedo as a test subject to find out how to the remove the rear odometer gear that basically sits at the very back of the gauge housing.

It actually wasn't that hard to remove. If you look and the side of the housing you will see a brass washer/bushing  with the tip of the gear sticking threw it,  The washer itself had been held in place by crimping the steel of the housing over, in 3 spots.  I simply had to dig the crimped part away ( I just used a small flat screw driver, the metal is pretty soft). Once it is clear the washer/bushing will almost fall right out, but a simple pry from the other side will pop the gear out of the housing.

All gears removed my speedo turing flawless, unfortuantly as soon as I put the gear back, it would bind up.  I tried the gear from the other gauge I had, same problem. No matter what I tried when I put the gear in place, it would click as i turned the speedo. I have left the gears out for now as i want to get the cluster back in and see if everything else is working,
