PG Classic '69 Console Kit woes

Just picked these up from PG on eBay a few weeks ago.
The console is out of the car, which may make all the difference in the world?
The front plate when pushed down flush with the screw holes sits up in the
front a good half an inch. I'm scared to attach the small black plate on the
front lip to the new repro because I don't want to score the tabs with the hardware.
If I do tighten them on, will that eat up some of the gap?
Has anyone else had this problem recently?
I know years ago there were fitment issues but was really hoping
they'd been worked out.

Any advice/horror stories/glimmers of hope?
